Just launching my trip report, and trying to see if I can post pictures!

We're just back from WDW, for our second trip this year, but a trip of many firsts: First time ever with no children, and our first-ever Free Dining experience. Also first time going during the triple-H season (heat, humidity & hurricanes.) Also first time at a value resort...spent 8/31-9/6 at POP Century.

Cast of characters: Me, age 52 and DH, also age 52. We got married about the time the earth cooled, or shortly before the dinosaur era. (Seriously, 33 years. Most of which have been fun.) Have 4 grown children (ages 29, 28, 25, and the "baby" Princess who is a 19 yr. old college sophomore.)

To explain the title...twice in the week before we left we had members of the *ahem* younger generation refer to our trip as "isn't that cute" when they heard we were actually going to Disneyworld on our own, sans children of any kind. After the initial disbelief that we would even think about going to WDW on our own, of course. Once that idea was accepted, then we were labeled "how cute". And this was from young adults who LIKE Disney. Apparently has never crossed their minds that "old" farts might like Disney too.:dance3:

So trip report will follow, as fast as I can get it done!

Awwww How Cute! :rotfl:

Looking forward to hearing about your trip. hmmmm What does a married couple do in Disney without children??? I guess I will have to wait and see.

O.K., so we started out our cute vacation on August 31, 2008 by checking into Pop Century Resort. Which is a very cute resort for cute oldsters...here's a link to my resort report, if you're interested:

http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1946530

Working on actual trip report...will post later, with some pictures! Just have about a kazillion things to do (and I'm not getting them done, somehow...maybe just a little bit too much time on the Disboards, hmmm?:surfweb: :rotfl: )

After a very long drive (Nebraska to Florida, via Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, Alabama with overnight stops in Marion, Illinois and Tallahassee, FL.) we arrived at Pop Century around 11:45 on 8/31/08 and checked in. What luck, our room was ready. So after doing a quick un-pack in a nice clean room, we returned to the main building to have lunch at Everything Pop (restaurant reviews here: http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1949596 Post #1!) Then we headed over to the bus area to catch a bus for Magic Kingdom. (We had our car, but usually have had better luck using bus service for the MK since there’s the hassle of parking at the TTC, then taking ferry or monorail over. Easier-usually-to just take bus from resort. More on the bussing later.)

Sunday, August 31 was the day before Labor Day. Now ordinarily, I'm the crazy-park-commando type, with an over the top plan scheduled to the minute to squeeze maximum enjoyment out of every second...the sort of plan that would win the Obsessive-Compulsive Outstanding Plan of the Year award (if there was such a thing.) But we just did that in May, so this time I somehow submerged most of those OC impulses (perhaps the new meds were helping? Just Kidding!) Anyway, our plan for Sunday was to head to Magic Kingdom, and see if we could get into anything. We really expected very large crowds, since this was Sunday of Labor Day Weekend…we figured this would be the prime-park-day for everyone doing a “last hurrah of Summer” on the 3-day weekend. We thought we might just end up wandering around, people-watching and just enjoying “being there” if lines were too long. We had ADR’s at Liberty Tree Tavern, so we knew we were good to go on food, anyway. So we headed out to see if we could get into any attraction.

Had great luck with the bus…’bout a 5 minute wait. Arrived at the MK around 1:45 on Sunday afternoon. We were amazed to see the Halloween décor on Main Street – I had read that they’d started to decorate, but hadn’t realized just how nice it would look (although it was kind of a disconnect to see Fall harvest stuff like pumpkins and orange/yellow/red leaves spread around in the Florida summer heat! Cognitive dissonance for sure.)

IMG_1693MKHalloweendecor.jpg

and here's Dh with more of the decor on Main Street.

Almost made me wish we were going to the MNSSHP on Friday. And the crowds that afternoon were not bad at all, as you can see from all the empty pavement in this picture...this was a shocker to us, we've never seen so much pavement all at once at Magic Kingdom.

We saw the Barbershop Quartet singers on Main Street…very fun. Haven’t seen them for years (we’re usually out of the parks in the afternoons, so have missed them most visits.)
IMG_1696MKsingersonMainStreet-2.jpg

Well, first we had our “aw, gee, it’s the castle” moment, this time complete with Halloween decor on Main Street. Oh, it just takes my breath away, every time…sappy, but a mandatory pause to take it in is required. Teary eyes are optional.

IMG_1695MarkMKCindycastleHalloween.jpg

We then headed first to Jungle Cruise to get a FP. We didn’t get to ride JC in May 2007, and in May 2008 we missed it again because the re-furb wasn’t done, so it’s been quite a long time since we’ve been on Jungle Cruise. Our FP return time was 3:25 so we decided to head out and try a few things we haven’t done for awhile. So with Jungle Cruise FP tucked in safe pocket, we wandered over to the Tiki room (I know…silly animatronic birds, etc. But we hadn’t done this in years & years – I think last time our baby was 4 years old…she’s a sophomore in college now! And the theme of this trip was to do some of the golden oldies (kind of fitting, since we’re golden oldies ourselves.) So we lucked out here, they were just seating people as we arrived, no wait. Now, I have to say either my recollection of the Tiki Room is WAY off, or they have seriously degraded this attraction. First, I thought this was a much shorter show than it used to be. Second, I remember it being much scarier (and more fun)…the part where the “gods” get angry used to get the little kids going pretty good, in my memory. No rise this time, even from the youngest in the crowd…it was very tame (and lame!) And I swear a spooky-looking and very noisy god used to come out of that thing in the middle (not the vaguely Barbie-shaped Tiki babe they have now.) Anyway, we decided we'll probably skip this again for another 10-15 years.

After the Tiki Room, we heard sounds of the parade, so slipped through the walkway to Frontierland and watched a little bit of the 3 o’clock parade…another first for us in many, many years. Normally, we do early-EMH-park-commando-mode, and then spend the afternoons at our hotel resting or swimming so we haven’t seen the afternoon parade at MK in probably 20 years. It was fun to see some of it. But I discovered I’m not really that into parades. Maybe if I had a kid in the parade (or maybe that’s it…I have spent so many years watching my kids in marching band that I’m paraded out…)

We still had a little time before our FastPasses were good, so next, we went to Swiss Family Treehouse. In May 2007, it was closed due to rain. We were in a hurry in May 2008, and it was crowded, so we skipped it. This time there was literally no one in the area, so we went. Was great fun seeing this all again in an uncrowded, unhurried way - and without little ones - so we could actually stop & look things over. We actually saw the original movie when it was new way back in 1960 or so (lordy, that was a long time ago!)…it’s one of the earliest movies I can remember seeing, and of course then we saw re-runs of it on the Wonderful World of Disney several times as kids. So we really enjoyed all the detail in the treehouse. Do today’s kids have any idea what the basis for the Disneyworld treehouse is-either the movie or the classic book it came from? Just wondering…anyway, we enjoyed it a lot. Well worth the walk-through, especially if it’s not crowded and you can look at everything. Here's me in the Treehouse
IMG_1702CathySwissFamTreehsMK.jpg

By now, we were ready for a Cruise…so off we went to use our FP at around 3:30 or so. We really enjoyed the cruise. The CM was Kim, and she was very good at delivering the tour…excellent comedic timing. Now I must admit I married into a family whose unofficial motto is they have never met a joke they didn’t like, no matter how stupid (well, actually I add the part "no matter how stupid." They will not admit there is such a thing as a stupid joke.) In fact, my DH is firmly convinced that the Pun is the highest possible art form in the world of comedy, so naturally he thought the speech in the Jungle Cruise tour were knee-slapping hilarious. I think Kim the CM was more than a bit surprised that someone was actually laughing at her patter (or maybe she just thought the old gray-haired guy had some rare form of heat prostration which caused him to laugh at virtually everything she said.) Whatever, we did enjoy the ride. Didn’t see anything new on the re-furb, just looked like everything was spruced up & working. I know at one time they were talking about making a movie series based on the JC (like they did with POTC) Have to say I’m in favor. I think they could start a whole new adventure series, similar to Indiana Jones but even funnier. Hope they do.

So, after JC, we got a FastPass for BTMRR (stand-by wait time was 60 min at the time) FP return time was for 7:30. Then continuing our do-the-things-we-skipped-before theme, we went to do the Hall Of Presidents for the first time in many years. We enjoyed it, but can also see why it’s a popular napping spot. Certainly wouldn’t put that on the list of must-do’s every time we’re there. While the animatronics are good, it’s just a little bit too educational for my idea of fun. And there were a lot of people in there trying to get the most “educational” value out of it as possible…just about gagged me! Let your kids have fun, for gosh sakes. You didn’t really bring your kids to WDW for educational purposes, did you? Think these parents were feeling guilty about pulling the kids out of school for a Free Dining vacation, so they felt they had to squeeze as much educational value out of the trip as possible. Course it would help if the parents knew some history, too. Overheard some interesting “facts” about American history while getting settled before the show started. Like I learned that Benjamin Franklin was the 2nd president…anyway, glad we did the Hall of Presidents this time. Nice & cool place to hang out for awhile on a very hot day.

We wandered over to Fantasyland to check wait-times on rides. Crowds were still fairly light. Mickey’s Philharmagic had a 20 min. wait, the TeaCups were 15 min., Winnie the Pooh and Snow White were both 20 min., Peter Pan was at 30 min. Not bad at all for a Sunday afternoon on a holiday weekend.

Anywho, was now time for our dinner reservation at Liberty Tree Tavern. We thoroughly enjoyed that meal. (review is post #4 on http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1949596) Our server - Mo, from Morocco, was friendly, smiling and very attentive. Now here’s an interesting note for those wondering: right on Main Street, they had a sign saying there was no availability for dinner at the following restaurants…and Liberty Tree was listed as one of the “no availability.” But this restaurant was not busy at all around 5:15. Don’t know if they had a lot of no-shows, or what. But there was nobody waiting when we checked in, and while we were eating, there were plenty of empty tables – I would guess as much as 1/3 of the table were empty. Even at 6:00 p.m. there were still a few empty tables. The characters were great (even though it was just 2 old fogies at the table, all the characters stopped & visited, posed for pictures.) However, by 6:25 when we left, the waiting area was full. So I guess the lesson here was check the restaurant yourself for availability, even if they have signs saying no availability. Especially if you’re willing to eat early, you may be able to get in. Here's DH & Minnie getting chummy at LTT...
IMG_1714MarkminnieLTT.jpg

And me & Mickey's best friend, Pluto...the characters are very fun at LTT!
IMG_1707cATHYplutoLTT.jpg

After dinner, we wandered over to Tomorrowland to do the Carousel of Progress. Again, an attraction we haven’t been to in a long, long, time. Oh, lordy, we forgot just how hokie that ride is! Omigosh…I know that’s one of Walt’s own masterpieces, but he sure had a funny idea about what made a great ride. I realize that part of it is a difference between what was “awesome” in 1960 is way different than what would impress now, but still, COP is really dated (even the updated part is dated!) That’s another one that we were glad we did this time, but probably won’t go on for many years again.

Was almost time for our return FP on BTMRR, so we wandered back to Frontierland via Fantasyland. Crowds were starting to build, the wait times posted in Fantasyland were all at about 60 minutes now. Except at Small World, of course. That was still posted as 5 minutes. So we rode IASW. Love that ride. Yes it’s syrupy-sweet, but we’re just a couple of old fogies who like losing it in a sappy sweet fantasy universe,LOL. It’s relaxing to suspend reality for a few minutes and just try to absorb all the details in IASW. (We don’t even mind the song, actually. Incredible, I know. But oh well. Just a couple of cute old dorks, easily amused.)

Then we were off to Big Thunder Mountain Rail Road. Loved it. This is one of my favorite rides…just enough roller coaster so I can pretend I do thrill rides, without being too intense, and I love the themeing. Stand-by wait time was now 70 minutes on BTMRR, 90 min. on Splash. We had no interest in doing Splash this trip (did it in May 2008, and we were 100% soaked…we got it coming & going that time. In the interest of no-chafing from wandering around in wet pants, we decided not to do it this time.)

After BTMRR, we meandered over to do POTC. Walk-on as usual. This is definitely another must-do for us. We lucked out with no flash-photogs this ride…just hate it when some fool flash-flash-flashes through the whole ride. I always wonder what’s the point of looking at this ride through a 2 x 2 viewfinder screen when you can see the whole great big thing just by looking. A real Duh! Who looks at all those pictures later, anyway…and it’s not like they’re good pictures, anyway? I always wonder if these people ever feel like they saw anything…or do they have to constantly refer to their pictures to “see” what was on the ride? Just enjoy the ride, for gosh sakes…that’s what you paid for…to be entertained. O.K., ‘nuff preaching. After POTC, we headed over to Aloha Isle to get our traditional Dole Whip float…very, very good on a hot, humid night. (Was 85 at noon when we checked into hotel, and didn’t cool off during the afternoon! Actually, didn’t cool off much all week.)

After our break, at around 8:00 or so we decided to head over to Space Mountain to check out waits. By this time park was getting very busy…this was the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, and the Magic Kingdom had EMH until 3:00 A.M. that night, so a steady stream of people had been coming into the park all evening. When we got to Space at around 8:15, the return time on the Fast Pass machine was…1:30-2:30 A.M.! The stand-by was 75 minutes. Now there were long lines for everything over there - even the TTA was thronged. Buzz had 60 min. wait, even Stitch had a 45 min wait. We wandered over to Fantasyland to check out wait times…boy, had they changed. Everything over there was now at least 40 minutes, several attractions over 60 minutes.

The crowds now seemed to be getting crazy-large. To the point you had to carefully choose your route through (what is it about crowds at WDW that always makes you feel like you’re going the wrong way? No matter which way we go, it always seems to be against the grain. Odd.) We decided to leave since we were pretty tired anyway, and had actually gotten quite a lot more done than we thought would be possible…even if it was to mostly be reminded why we skipped several attractions for years & years and didn’t miss them much.

We worked our way through the crowds…people were already staking out Parade spots all the way around the hub and down Main. Crossed Main Street just in time to pop into Main Street Bakery to get pastries for Monday breakfast. There was a short line in the bakery, but service was fast, friendly & efficient. We came back out onto Main Street just in time to see the beginning of the SpectroMagic parade, but after watching the first two floats, we decided not to stay because we’d just seen the whole thing in May 2008 and we wanted to beat the crowds in the bus lines. It’d been a long day, starting when we left Tallahassee at 7:45 for the final leg of our road trip to Orlando.

People were absolutely pouring into the park as we left. At 9:15, every security guard checking bags had at least 20 people in line, they had probably 10 entry turnstyles going and fully loaded busses were arriving-standing room only. The busses were lined up as far as you could see—well around the corner, all the way down the street to in front of the Contemporary. I guess people were bound and determined to get their money’s worth out of the 3 A.M. EMH! Don’t see how much fun that would be…the lines were already getting crazy long, before these people even arrived.

We headed to the Pop Century bus stop (why is it always the farthest from the exit?) And waited 30 minutes for a bus…while we watched bus after bus pull up at every other resort stop. How could all these busses be pouring into the park and none of them be routed to Pop? Finally, our bus came & we returned to the resort to crash.

Summary & Weather Report for 8/31/08: Partly cloudy/sunny; Very hot & humid. Hi's around 90 in late afternoon. Still in Mid-80's @ 9:55 p.m. Light crowds in the afternoon, but very crowded from about 7p.m. on at MK on a late EMH night. Average wait time at 8:00 P.M. for very popular rides in Fantasyland was 60 minutes, for headliners like Space Mountain, 75 minutes.

Next up: Maniacs for Toy Story Mania

I am really enjoying your trip report! Sounds like you had a lot of fun and got very lucky with the crowds earlier in the day.

I agree with you on the Pop - we've always done Deluxe or Moderate, but we took a chance and found it to be very nice. And if the savings buys you a couple of extra days at WDW, how can you complain about that?!?

Exactly! In our case, it justified a 2nd trip to WDW this year...we were just there in May. But the second trip was much more affordable, between free dining and staying at a value resort. No, it wasn't plush, but then we weren't there for lots of resort time!

Lovin your trip report:) Thanks for sharing from one old foggie to another:) I love Disney, especially MK:)

O.K., first let me say I'm sorry we really didn't take a lot of park pictures this trip, because we were just there in May (using photopass), so somehow it seemed silly to take a bunch more...and I was concentrating on getting good food pictures this time, since I repeatedly forgot that in May. So other than the Halloween decor pics at MK, we mostly skipped pics. I have popped in a few of our May pictures at appropriate locations...you'll note, most of the pictures are my DD & her BFF...frankly, they're just way more into pictures & both photogenic. They take good pics, and fun. So I'll mostly use them for illustration:laughing: To get you in the DHS mood, here's the kids in May 2008, posing with the High School Musical props, near the entrance. The guy way over to the right in the pic is DH (he didn't really mean to be in the picture:lmao: )
image072greatDHSHSMDH-1.jpg

So, on to Monday's maniac adventures...After a bit of a sleep-in (no early EMH at Animal Kingdom for us!) and a lovely breakfast on Main Street bakery pastries (dining review at http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1949596, post #21 ) we headed over to Disney Hollywood Studios. Our first shocker for the day was how close Pop Century was to DHS…it’s about a 3 minute drive, including waiting for a red light! We parked in close, and made our way to the holding area to await Rope drop. Thanks to Robo’s fine TSM route maps, we knew exactly which way we wanted to go as soon as park opened. (We actually already had ridden TSM earlier this year…on the very day it opened to the public in May…kind of by accident because we just happened to be in the area that day. We were actually looking to see if the new Narnia display was open yet…it wasn’t, but TSM was. So we were in one of the first groups to ride on the first public day.)

Anyway, this time, we dashed for Toy Story Mania fastpasses (o.k., so my DH dashed…I kind of-sort of walked fast. Well, fairly fast for an oldie with a few issues, as they say.) And regardless of all the suggestions to “send your fastest runner,” it’s really your fastest walker because Disney doesn’t really let you dash/run/skip anywhere at rope-drop…you can walk, fast. But the route to every headliner is controlled the whole way & there’s plenty of CM’s to pace everyone so no danger of trampling occurs. Anyway, since DH is faster, the plan was for DH to get the FP’s and meet me at the stand-by line so we could ride in a relatively short stand-by line and then ride again later on the Fastpasses.

Well, the best laid plans, etc. & all that. What actually happened was DH got to the FP machines on a fairly timely basis. But at 9:03, when it was down to one person in front of him in his FP line, the danged machines went haywire. Apparently, they expected this to happen, because techs were standing by and jumping from machine to machine to immediately get them going again, which they did. But this small delay of just a few minutes ended up having a ridiculously large impact on our plans: our FP’s came out of the machine at 9:07…yep, just seven minutes after the park opened. The FP return time was 9:55-10:55, which wasn’t too bad, either. But the stand-by wait time was now 50 minutes, which the CM said was probably close to real because the snakeline was nearly full! So we pocketed our fastpasses and skipped the stand-by wait. Too many years of OC planning using the UG have made me cringe in horror at the thought of waiting more than 20 minutes. Can’t do it…waste of valuable touring time, ya know. And I’ve already seen the entire snake line of TSM…when we rode it the day it opened in May, there was no Fastpass machines running yet, so everyone went through the regular line. It’s cute & all, but not worth standing in line nearly an hour just to see it, IMHO.

So we headed over to Tower of Terror. Funny thing was once you got away from the Pixar area of the park, it was fairly empty…and this was Labor Day morning. My theory was that so many people stayed up until 3 a.m. at the Magic Kingdom the night before, only those who couldn’t do the night owl routine made it to DHS that morning. A few people here and there were moseying & gawking but no throngs anywhere except the area around TSM. So when we got over to ToT…the wait time said 10 minutes. This was around 9:20 or so. Didn’t even take 10 minutes…more like the time it takes to walk through the empty snakeline outside & inside. I missed this ride in May due to a sprained ankle so was really looking forward to this…it’s always been one of my favorites. But, the ride was not so much fun somehow. We just didn’t get the usual “bounce”: twice on the window-opening we ended up bouncing behind the sign…the view was really, really obstructed. That’s half the fun for us, seeing how much we can spot on each window-opening. And the 3rd bounce we didn’t even reach the open window (just saw a little edge of daylight at the top.) Was pretty lame…thought they could have bounced us a few more times, especially since there were no lines of people waiting. Here's my DD & her BFF at ToT in May 2008:
image061DHSGreattowerofterrorkid-1.jpg

After that, it was on to Rockin Rollercoaster. Again, total walk on. That sign said 20 minutes, but I think that was perhaps what they expected the time to be on that day. Certainly wasn’t the actual wait time by any stretch – basically it was walk through the snake lines without stopping, to the “preshow” area, watch the little show with Aerosmith & the agent, then load. So however long it took to walk to the preshow & watch the little set-up bit. It was great, anyway cuz I didn’t get to ride this in May either. And we really lucked out by riding early, I guess, because talking to people while waiting for Fantasmic later, we heard that RnR had been down repeatedly throughout that day, including shortly after we rode that morning. The kids again...at RnR in May 2008 (Doing their rock stars impression...as you can tell, they're really into drama, LOL.)
image083KidsatRnRMay2008-1.jpg

By now, it was about 9:45, so we headed back across the park to TSM to use our FP. Love this ride…not all that good at the game, but it’s sure fun to try and we’re improving. (Can’t quite convince DH we need monthly trips to WDW to improve our TSM skills, though.) Was fun to be there on the first of the month, so the “high score of the month” were relatively low, at least they still were 45 minutes after the park opened (the high score was at 199,000 so my measly 114,000 didn’t look so horrible…yet.) We then checked the return time for new Fast Passes…since we planned on being in the park that evening we were trying to time another TSM fastpass for evening. The time to return was up to 3:00-4:00 p.m., so we figured we’d wait a bit to get a better timing. I know you can usually use Fastpasses anytime after the return time, not just in the “window”, but we’d heard rumors that they were getting picky about that on the very popular rides, so figured we’d do better to have FP window that fit when we’d actually be there. So we headed over to do the One Man’s Dream tour & movie. We’ve never done this…seems like we started to do the walk-through tour on some previous trip…some of it seemed familiar. But this time we went all the way through & stayed for the movie too. We found this to be quite enjoyable…kind of a sedate celebration of Walt Disney & his ideas. Then we checked the Fastpass machine on TSM after that, and it was now up to 6:00-7:00, which would work for us so we got the FP’s and headed for lunch.

We went to eat at ABC Commissary (dining review is on the same link as above) After lunch, it was off to see the Beauty & the Beast show at 11:45. We were determined to see this one, since we missed it in May (they had some Choral contest going on then so very limited schedule of presentations for B & B in May that did not fit in our schedule.) Anyway, thought it was quite good considering what an abbreviated version of the story they do. The costumes & singing were very well done…all in all a very pleasant little entertainment interval, and the amphitheater is covered so you’re out of the hot sun.

Well, we knew we’d be back that evening, as well as probably later in the week also; it was starting to get crowded and very hot in the park, so we decided to head back to hotel for our a/c R & R. We stopped at Starring Rolls for Tuesday breakfast pastries on the way out of the park.

Later, Monday Mania Part II

I'm loving your trip report! I enjoy all the details. Sounds like a wonderful trip so far. Can't wait to hear more! :)

What part of Nebraska are you from? I went to college in Seward, and my sister lives in Lincoln. Neither of us are originally from Nebraska; we just wound up there and both love(d) it. :thumbsup2

Love reading your TR. My DH & I plan to go for our 25th anniv. in May of 2010 for the first trip without our kids. They have gone with us for 5 trips so this next trip will be just us "old farts":lmao:

Glad you're enjoying my report...we really did have a wonderful time.

We live about 40 miles east of Lincoln (just south of Omaha.) Been to Seward at least once, probably more, but it's all fuzzy at this point. (DD played volleyball in jr high/high school, so did the obligatory tournament attendance all over the place, seems like every week. Probably wasn't, but seemed like we were forever packing up for the day & driving in the dark/rain/snow, etc. to watch a ball tournament. Much prefer touring Disney to touring Nebraska gymnasiums:rotfl:)

Have one kid living in Lincoln now, and same DD is now fairly well grown up. She lives near Lincoln, going to college at Doane (that one may be familiar to you, if you went to Concordia in Seward? I think Doane & Concordia compete in the same conference, or at least do invitationals & such together since they're not very far, geographically.)

Just be prepared, even if you call it an anniversary trip, you won't believe how many people think it's :dance3: "crazy" :dance3: for adults to go to Disneyworld without children. I mean, "What for? What would you do there?" Course, in my experience, the vast majority of those people have never actually been to Disneyworld, so I prefer to think they're clueless:confused3 and we're the clever ones:woohoo:

Yes I did go to Concordia. I do remember Doane, mainly as a sports competitor as you said. ;) Looking forward to more of your trip report!

We returned to park about 4:00 or so. This time we took the bus, figuring we wouldn’t get a decent parking spot by this time of day. Although the service to the park was fine, using the bus turned out to be a big mistake! More on that later. We had 4:45 Fantasmic dinner package reservation for Mama Melrose, so headed on back since it's kind of at the far side of the park. Thought the crowds had increased considerably by this point, or at least they were more equally distributed throughout the park.

Really enjoyed that meal, good food, good service. (dining review at http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1949596 post #21) Teaser photo, tiramisu dessert at Mama Melrose:

After our meal, we went to use our TSM fastpasses. Just love all the over-sized toy items in there...they have a lot of favorite toys represented in there (we loved the barrel o' monkeys...spent many an afternoon playing with those things when our kids were little.) Here's a pic from May of DH & I in the stand-by section:

And another of decor detail:

I want the job where you get to make giant stuff! Between Pop Century & TSM, it looks like such fun to create giant icons of familiar toys & cultural items.

At this time, the stand-by was 80 minutes and the fastpass machines were all covered so I guess they were all gone for the day (this was a late EMH night at DHS.) There were a lot of disappointed people milling around over there trying to decide whether or not to bother to get in the stand-by line…from the conversations I overheard, there were a lot of people just arriving at the park around 6-7:00 p.m. for the late EMH hours who thought they’d get a TSM fastpass first thing, then use it later after EMH started. Wasn't going to work like that. They were not happy to find out there were no FP's left. The CM’s were telling people they would not reopen the FP machines for extra magic hours - they said if you didn't already have a FP, you had to join the stand-by line (wonder how many kazillion times a night they have to say that?) When asked if the wait time would go down, the CM’s reply was “don’t count on it, when the park's open late we usually have a crowd.”

After doing TSM for the second time that day – yay us (although we both scored lower this time...but we'd switched seats, so I claimed my aim was off because I was discombobulated by new angle! Truth is I'm just not that good at video games, no matter where I sit.:rotfl2: ) Had fun anyway.

The we headed over to the Great Movie Ride. Really enjoyed it...just do not get tired of looking at all those movie sets...I've seen every one of the famous movies depicted in there...it's really great fun to be "in" the set instead of looking at it on a screen. The animatronics are really exceptionally well done in this one, IMHO. But I do wish they would do the other live-action version sometime when I’m there – do they even do the other version anymore? (I'm talking about the cowboy-bad-guy version...saw it a long, long, time ago, maybe even the first time I rode this not too long after this park opened. But it’s always been the gangster taking over the ride every time since.) Also wish the camera id-juts would pay attention to the no flash photography rule. It really gets tiresome when the CM’s have to keep interrupting the tour to repeatedly tell people to turn off the flash. Why do these people think “no flash” doesn’t apply to them?

Well, then we were off to see the Muppets. Just love the 3-D Muppets. I know it’s getting a bit frayed about the edges & all, but still think it’s one of the best 3-D projects Disney has ever done (ties with Mickey’s Philharmagic in my estimation.) This pic is the Muppet courtyard...just love all the Muppet characters in that fountain...stroke of genius, whoever designed that. And again, what fun for whoever made it. That's me on the phone...even at WDW can't ignore the phone, dang it! And DH apparently found it amusing to snap a picture documenting me on the phone.

Then we did Star Tours…no wait here. This is getting a little old, too, but I will always love Star Wars…I was about 20 when the first movie came out, and Luke Skywalker & Han Solo were the Dr. McDreamy guys of my era! Sigh. So any ride with so much Star Wars theming is going to get me, every time.

It was now getting close to time for Fantasmic, so we went to get Fastpasses for Tower of Terror first, and then headed over to the area for Fantasmic dinner seating. Love that package…no waiting in hot, long & crabby lines. I’ve read other reports from people who were there that same day, and it sounds like the regular wait lines were no fun at all - one gal said it was so bad waiting that it ruined the whole experience for her. Well, I do know the place was quite full by the time the show started. And it was quite warm that night, so had I been crammed into the waiting area, I'm sure I wouldn't have enjoyed the show quite as much either. I don't do well in packed-in situations...personal space becomes way too important. I'd be yelling for meds, no doubt:yay:

Anyway, I know there’s lots of debate as to whether the Fantasmic package is worth the cost…well if you’re like me and can’t stand waiting a long time in crowds of people, it’s well worth it. A fair number of people think the DHS restaurants are lousy, but so far, we actually like their food. And heck, this time it was FREE! (well, except for the * ahem * , adult beverages. Which undoubtedly contribute to the enjoyment level of the food. ) Another teaser-here's the Peach Bellini and a fine Italian beer from Mama Melrose:drinking1

Even though we just saw Fantasmic in May, we thoroughly enjoyed it again. Of all the Disney Fireworks-type spectaculars, I like this one the most, probably because it’s a combo show of story, music, animation, lights, lasers, noise, fireworks. And probably mostly because you get to sit (and the view is good from all seats) Somehow, all that just makes it a more relaxed experience than the other fireworks shows. We don’t have to see MK or Epcot’s fireworks every WDW trip, but we pretty much do want to see Fantasmic every time. And even though we just saw it in May, I swear there were several parts we didn’t remember at all (gee, the upside of our aging-fogey forgetfulness…every show is brand new!)

After Fantasmic, we waited for awhile in our seats for the crowd to clear somewhat from the main exit. Now usually, we’d exit directly out the dinner package exit – that’s the fast way to get out since it spills you out mostly ahead of the main crowd. But this time we were heading to ToT to use our Fastpass, which was the opposite direction from the easy exit. Well, we severely underestimated how long it would take for the main part of the crowd to clear over there: even though we waited at least 10 minutes, we still got stuck in a very crowded, very slow exit. Took at least 10 more minutes to get out and over to ToT. The standby time was at 40 minutes, but our Fastpasses were good to go, so off we went. Anyway, so glad we decided to ride again that night…this time the ride was wonderful. The bounce this time was perfect for an unobstructed view – several times - and the park was so lovely at night, all lit up.

We stopped to get Mickey Bars – what is it about those things that make them so much better than plain old ice cream bars? And took the time to admire the looks of DHS all lit up at night: it’s really very pretty with the lights edging the buildings and various windows upstairs in the buildings lit up…you notice different details at night that kind of just blur into the background during the day. But this was a late EMH night there on Labor Day (open until 1 a.m., I believe) and the crowds were just pouring into the park at 9:45 p.m. Basically this seemed to be the pattern all week. I think because most of the parks were closing relatively early all week, whichever park had the late EMH just got swamped as the other parks closed…people were bound and determined to get their money’s worth out of the resort perks of EMH, I guess. Couldn’t see much point in staying for such long lines myself.

So we left the park and headed for the bus. What a drag…even though there were long lines of busses coming into the park, bus after bus disgorging hundreds of people, there apparently were no busses being allotted for return to Pop Century. We saw double busses pulling up at other resort stops with the first bus picking up one or two people, and the second bus leaving empty while none stopped for the ever-growing crowd at the Pop Century stop.

And of course by the time the bus did show up at our stop, about 30 minutes after we got in line behind some 20 people, it was going to be Standing-Room Only once they loaded the two late-arriving electric-scooter-riders and their extended families (an additional 16 people in all!) So we got to stand, when we should have had a seat based on our place & time spent in line. And then it took at least 10 more minutes to load 2 scooters & their hordes. So by now we'd been waiting 40 minutes to leave. We were just glad that Pop was so close to DHS, so we wouldn't have to stand for long at all. Wrong! The 3 minute car ride was about 12 minutes on the bus...for some reason, this driver took the "scenic" route getting back to Pop. Honestly, don't know how he did that. Since I was standing, I couldn't see the route he took, but I do know it was way more turns than it should have been.

Well, while waiting, we figured out how to do it on all future trips: drive to the park early in the morning when we're going to start & finish in the same park. Then we should leave the car in the lot for our mid-day break and use bus service back & forth to the hotel...we never waited long, or had any trouble getting a seat, on mid-day bus trips. Then at the end of our day when we were tired & just wanted to get back, our car would have been still parked close-in near the front of the lot where we’d parked first thing in the morning. There would have been no standing in line at the end of the night waiting for a delinquent bus, and no losing seats to late-arriving extended scooter families. (Please no flames. Not debating the Disney policy here, just lamenting how long it made the wait, and that I lost a seat to fully-functioning, non-handicapped extended family members of the scooter people who arrived a good 20 minutes after I’d gotten into line.)

Oh, well. It was still a very good day, all in all. We'd had great fun, and we were still at Disneyworld after all!

We had the best time this past July going w/o ds. We all went in June then decided to go back just the two of us! It was fun, I couldn't wipe the smile off of my face all week.....:goodvibes
Can you believe those crowds of extended family members that get on the busses with the ECV users? Sometimes I wonder if they just rent those to get the perks that disney offers.....:confused3 Allthough I know that some people really need them.

Yeah, I know it- I'm sure most people do actually need them, and you can't always tell, there are people who appear to be fine but have health issues which are not at all obvious. Judge not, and all that, I know. But there are some that definitely cheat the system. I didn't see it this time, but in May, there was a case I know for sure they "didn't need it"...was a couple of 20-somethings tooling around Epcot, drunk on their butts. They were using the ECV's to make their drink-around-the-world-tour faster & easier. Was scary - they came very close to running into people several times, but mostly just ran into each other. Now, before anyone gets riled up about not-so-obvious disabilities, in this case I know they didn't need them, because I saw them on and off the things...just depended on whether it was convenient to ride at the moment or not. They were walking in the regular line just ahead of us for the Mexico boat ride, laughing about what a clever idea it'd been to rent the ECV's and how much fun it was to be treated so special all over. Gag me. Don't know if they were just using them in the parks, or on the busses too. I hope not. I just kept thinking, Karma...you kids better watch out, it'll kick you in the rear one of these days.

Did you know that you can rent them for $45 a day? I can't imagine trying to park one on the bus. I've seen some poor people not having a clue how to get those on and it took forever.....:headache:

Love your report and title.
DH and I did our 30th at WDW last year w/o kids. I stopped telling people where we were going because of the raised eyebrows and looks. Their idea of a great trip is tropical, beachy, romantic. We stayed at CBR, so argueably it was tropical, beachy and romantic, too.:goodvibes
But DH and I love rollercoasters, so why not go to a place with many and so much more.
We had such fun, we are going back in a couple weeks to celebrate 31.:yay:
