We need to pamper our deck this year. We moved into the house in Sept. 04. Last summer, we realized the deck may not be in as good a shape as we thought when we bought the house. Some wood on the railings is rotted, boards are popping up, so, with my DD's 1st Holy Communion coming up in a few weeks, we need to fix up the deck.

I am thinking I want to actually paint it, and not just stain it. The back of our house is a yellow vinyl siding, so I am thinking a brown deck would look nice against the yellow. We also have a smaller deck off the slider to the family room, it is more like a patio with the deck making a backward L. Should we paint that the same color, or go with something different?

Are you a fan of just staining, or do you have a painted color?

I'm more for staining than painting. Painting just requires too much upkeep. We just stained the deck on our old home in redwood. Now, we are wishing we had done it while we were living there b/c it is so pretty

If you're gong to paint, paint only the spindles and the rails -- do not paint the deck surface. You won't be happy. Use a penetrating stain instead. If the railings are rotted replace them, don't be cheap and try to cover it up. The same for any floorboards which may need to be replaced. As my grandfather always said, "Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT."
