Is this REALLY bad?

First of all, I'm not following Atkins, WW or any other formal program. I'm roughly following the common sense of "Body for Life", which stresses weight-training 3 days a week and aerobics another 3 days a week. In terms of diet, it's basically using common sense with portion sizes and staying clear of foods like cheesecake!:(

I've been trying to be consistent (I'm even keeping a WISH journal on the other board) for the past 4 days and have lost 1-2 lbs. Yesterday, we ended up grabbing a bite at McDonald's because we had so many errands stacked up and my 7 yo son wanted his CHicken Nuggets desperately. ANYWAY, I ordered a regular size cheeseburger, a child's size fry and a Diet Coke. (About 550 cal.) My big cheat was I split an apple pie (110 cal.) with my DH. HOWEVER, for lunch I'd only had a small bowl of homemade vegetable and chicken soup (clear broth) and 2 crackers. Do you think that evened out, so the McDonald's trangression is acceptable?

Opinions, please!
Thanks,
Karla B., with 30 lbs. to lose!

I think you did great by not ordering a Quarter Pounder with cheese, a fry and a full-octane coke.....SUPERSIZED!!!!

Portion size! I think it's key on ANY plan. Heck, even Atkins people can't sit down to 6 pounds of bacon, a cheese wheel and a large ham for dinner!

Don't stress about it! You're doing fine! :) If after hearing us all cheer for you on WISH you STILL feel like you goofed up, then hit the reset button and start over. :)

But, imho, you practiced great restraint!

Karla,

welcome to WISH! maybe you joined already but I"m not on the boards as much during the summer and reluctantly admit I missed it!

anyhow - I did BFL during the summer a couple years ago, and from what I remember it's more a balance of protein/carbs with some fat per meal. Probably the kids meal at McDs was too high in carbs and too low in protein, but then again it's better than a Quarter Pounder with Cheese supersized :)

Only you can really judge whether you're happy with your intake for the day - and unless I'm misreading you it sounds like you are doubting it enough that it's stuck with you to post it. Next time you'll be more prepared and try a grilled chicken sandwich throwing out the top bun or one of their salads.

BUT - you're totally forgiven (if needed and it really isn't) for the McDs lunch today and it's in the past anyhow. Do you know our motto - Onward and Downward (note: no backward in that so looking back is unacceptable in the WISH by-laws)

Tomorrow is a new day and so is the next tomorrow. Take it a day at a time, set mini-goals along the way and always remember you have the BEST support group right here!

You did great in not ordering full size everything. I truely believe that since we are all making life changes, that we have to learn to eat real food in real life situations.

I guess that is one reason why I do like weight watchers, is because it gives you something to measure. I know that if I count my points and have a meal like that........the points I end up with at the end of the day will tell me if I shouldn't have eaten so much.

Keep up the great work. I bet those french fries tasted so good. I think I enjoy things way more now!

Melanie

Thanks for the input and encouragement...and congratulations, ladies, on doing so well already! I actually just joined WISH 4 days ago...following the sight of a photo recently taken and realizing that I need to try a plan where I need to be somewhat accountable for my progress. The WISH boards and journals are great tools for someone like me who's always tried to "go it alone".
Thanks again,
Karla B.

Karla,

Although this won't go down in history as one of the healthiest eating days you'll have, it's not horrible either. :)

I think the most important thing we can do when we're trying to control the amount of food we eat is try to make sure we're eating healthy, and cutting out empty calories wherever we can. We have to squeeze more nutrition into less food! Your McDonald's lunch had some of those empty calories and lots of evil carbs. ;)

BUT- it's all about balance and moderation!!! Fast food does have a place in this world, whether because of the convenience or just because we occasionally have a hankering for a Quarter Pounder with Cheese. Let's emphasize that word occasionally.

Your day was fine. But you wouldn't want to do it EVERYday.:p And I agree with the others that your restraint was commendable!
