I am sure to be flamed for this but here goes.... If you are at a buffet, can you take something for later....ie a apple or bananna....Not a plate of food but something small like a piece of fruit?

I especially want to know as my little kids often get down from the table walk outside and delcare "i am hungry"!

No flames here...You cannot take anything from a buffet out of the restaurant, or from an all-you-can-eat family-style restaurant. Sorry.

Personally, I don't necessarily think it's "ok" but I don't think anyone is going to stop you unless you start pulling out the tuperware ;)

I think you'd be fine with a piece of fruit.

I also don't think it's okay to take food to go from an all you can eat buffet. If you want food later you should be prepared to pay for it IMO. That having been said, I think if a little one has already chosen an item, but couldn't finish it and wants to take it for later, then the restaurant would probably be understanding.
A silly story.... a couple of years ago a friends 2 year old ds wanted to take a banana from Crystal Palace. Somehow he got attached to this dang banana. Called it his banana all through breakfast. Declared at the end of the meal that he would be taking his banana. His mom said that it was not okay. Waitress said that it would be just fine (because he was so little, cute, and serious about it). He kept the banana in his stroller in the late June heat all day and when any of us got near it, he reminded us that it was his banana. No one, including him ever ate the banana. :confused3 I think it was a souvenir!! :lmao:
For the record - it was originally MY banana - but he still gets mad if I say that!!!

I think that the rule here is that no food can be taken out. (Although, when we were at H & V, once DS fell asleep. The waiter brought us a container and told us to make up a lunch for him. :thumbsup2 He ate it while we watched the parade.)

On a cruise, I might grab a piece of fruit for later - but then all food is included onboard. At a buffet, I wouldn't - but, honestly, I would look the other way if I saw you with an apple:rotfl: no flames, here.

Right or wrong aside...I watched a woman fill her bag with an assortment of fruit from the display at Crystal Palace...No sly looks, no attempt at subtlety, just fully like it was a grab and go!:rotfl2:

thats super nice of them. we had ate at crystal palace once and my ds 3 at the time passed out before we were sat then laid down on the bench and slept thru dinner, no plate was offered and they took his ts credit as well. I ended up buying him corn dog nuggets later on to eat cause he woke up starving. you got a nice waitress.

Well I think the strict interpretation of the rules is "no" it's AYCE while you are there.

That said, having a 4 year old who was so enamoured of Pooh & Friends that he barely ate, we took a banana for later. Nobody is really going to look twice if you take a single piece of fruit, but loading up a bag, that's just not cool.

Just last Saturday we were at Crystal Palace, adn we were shocked to see this family go up to the buffet with a bag, and fill it with fruit, put it under the stroller and leave. I can see taking a banana or 2 or something like that. But come on! A whole bag of stuff??!??!?

I agree that normally, it's not OK. However, the last time we were at Chef Mickey's, our kids both had a banana on their plate from the beginning and got too busy with the characters to eat them, although they ate most everything else. Our server practically insisted we take them, so we did. It's not like they were going to put them back!! Now, going up to the buffet and loading up for later is different. . .

Realistically anything that you put on your tray they are going to throw away anyway so I see no issue with taking a piece or 2 of fruit.

B.

No flames here either... I am with the majority on this one-
Our rule of thumb is- if it is something messy i.e. not able to be taken in its existence such as mac n' cheese, ribs, etc -It is not taken.
If it is something such as fruit, a yogurt, cookies, muffin- we would take it- Again as another PP mentioned if it is already on your plate, the wait staff is going to throw it out anyway (and even though a banana has a skin not eaten, I don't know if I'd grab a banana that was put back on the bar from someone's plate...) -LOL
Now, if your young one has a plate and either gets wrapped up in character interaction or falls asleep - I think it would be nice for the ability to take in a to go container what is on his/her plate- but it is not a rule and should not be expected...
You should be fine with a couple pieces of fruit, a muffin or so...

Wow! There are people who are so bold to load up bags and take off? Have they ever been approached by a CM? I would think that THAT would raise some eyebrows and warrant a CM quietly letting them know that it is not allowed! That's nervey (sp)- :sad2:
Oh! & this is our experience with local home buffet meals (Golden Coral and such) our first trip is coming up soon but I figure "We don't do it at home, it will definitely not be done at Disney!"

I agree with this. If you already took it from the buffet and intended to eat it during the meal but didn't for whatever reason, then it can be taken.

My MIL always takes a few cookies with her any time we go to a buffet anywhere. It drives me crazy! Although...I had one ADR left to plan (her first WDW trip is coming up) and I'd considered a buffet. I may need to rethink it though.

Yes you can....we did the CP breakfast last month and the waitress encouraged us to take fruit for later in the morning and noticed how much our niece loved the muffins so she brought out a little bag with a few muffins in it for her to take for a late snack.

At dinner time, also at CP, our waiter noticed that DH had a thing for the cookies so he wrapped some up for us to take

I would never have a problem with seeing anyone take a piece of fruit, muffin, or other portable item out of the buffet for their kids, but I'm telling you that if I had seen that woman loading up a bag with fruit I would have embarrassed her in front of everyone! That is ridiculous... I would have alerted a CM as well.

Had she even eaten at the buffet or did she just walk in the restaurant and take fruit?

I can see this...for kids.
The excitement that kids have, especially during a character meal, can make them focus on nothing but the characters. They;ll say they aren't hungry just so they can focus on the characters. You know as soon as you leave they will want to eat.

Personally I see nothing wrong with taking something for a child, a muffin, a piece of fruit. The buffets are not inexpensive, and they must make a lot of profit off the children's meals. I would never have an issue with something for a child- just not their whole next meal!:lmao:

Last year at the Crystal Palace, my DD got a plate of food which had an apple on it. She couldn't finish all her food, so we tucked the apple in our bag and she ate it later as a snack. I ddin't see the harm as it was already on her plate and we couldn't put it back anyway.

Now, if I were to go up to the buffet and start grabbing stuff for later, that's completely different.

My son took an apple from Chef Mickey's intending to eat it...got too full and we didn't want to waste it. It would have been trash. In that case I can see it being ok but to take a whole bag intentionally is wrong.
