Is this legal????

Think of it this way--it's not quite fair to the musician who is trying to earn a living if people steal his/her work rather than paying for it.

That's an interesting comment about going back and buying it from iTunes. Does anyone know if purchasing legal copies is accepted as valid restitution after someone finally figures out that [duh] stealing is not okay?
Since I know enough struggling musicians, I'm always preaching to everyone not to download music or buy bootleg CDs or DVDs. It's that time of year when a new batch of summer interns is just arriving at the office, so I'll soon have another batch of ducklings to steer towards the moral path. There are lots of college kids out there who just don't understand at first, and then the eyerolls stop, and they want to know if there's anything they can do to correct what they've done.
Does anyone have any suggestions? It's not as if they could send it back.

Actually -- struggling musicians should be giving their music away. Thats how they stop being struggling musicians. they get thier music out there. You know like Mettalica -- whos popularity was born on the back of bootlegs.

and Muscians do not lose money when their music is downloaded. the LABELS and and the RIAA lose money. The artists already got paid.

But heres a secret -- nobody needs a label anymore -- self publish is so simple now. distribution is instantaneous. welcome to the internet.

A struggling musician is a musician that either sucks, or is lazy these days -- look at Rebecca Black -- if SHE can make it --- :)

Note that i am NOT advocating piracy or content theft -- that is jsut as wrong as stealing from a bank -- but just saying struggling muscians are doing it wrong and should probably find a new job.
And go and view the $8 billion ipod video.. its very enlightening.

This is not true. It's like books. Musicians and the artists involved in creating music get $ for each unit sold, and get paid each time a song is played, etc.

It's something like $1 per album to the artist.

This is the big point, most musicians now have to stay on the road doing concerts because they earn very little from the actual sales of there music because of illegal downloads. I think spending $1.29 on a song on I-tunes is a way better option than taking a chance on doing something illegal and is still way better than the days you might buy a crap album because it has 1 good song on it.

There are a handful of VERY popular musicians who are able to make great deals ahead of time with their labels so that they get paid upfront, but most do not. AND if we rely on this system, then just a few major labels decide who we will listen to and there will be no way for new or different music to be heard.

Many "BIG" stars have been swindled out of the money that their music has made for record labels. You should look into what happened to George Michael and Prince, to name just two.

You contradict your own argument when you say that "nobody needs a label" today. Self-publishing can be very easy, but it's a heckuva risk to put your music out there without the protection of a label when so many people think it is perfectly acceptable to steal a musicians work. How is a self-published musician to make a living and continue making music if people refuse to pay to listen to that music?

Stealing music is just as bad or worse than stealing from a bank. If my "job" were making food, or paintings or furniture and someone stole the things that I made you would recognize that that person was depriving me of my livelihood. Stealing music is no different. Some people just want so badly to have things without paying for them that they convince themselves that it is okay to steal music because they don't "see" the victim of their crime.

And if I made furniture or houses for a living I don't think you would tell me that the only way to earn a living would be to give away the things that I had made.

Music is a product, even though it isn't visible. It belongs to the person who created it and anyone who wants to own music should compensate the person who has created it.

Most musicians I know and listen to either advocate, or if not out-rightly advocate they have no problem with, downloading their music. A lot put out their albums for free as well. They make fractions of pennies on a CD sale but significantly more on merchandise purchases and concert tickets... and the only way to get people to go to your show or buy your band tee is to get people to listen to your music.

If someone chooses to give away their music, that's great. Enjoy it. That doesn't mean that people have the right to steal music that is for sale.

Sometimes a supermarket gives free samples, that doesn't mean you can take whatever you want from the shelves.

Musicians are artists and business people. Stealing from them is wrong.

No one has seemed to name a program that can do this...Most of you probably have it on your computer already. Real Player does this in probably 3 steps....
