Is This Expensive For A Handmade Quilt...?

$60 is not bad for a good quality handmade quilt, and flannel is often used as material for the backing (especially for baby quilts). It's really soft and makes quilts extra-cozy, IMO.

Not expensive IF it is truly 'handmade.' Flannel backing is ok as long as the quilting goes through all layers. Lots of women in my family quilt. It's a hugely labor intensive activity and although machined quilts are called 'handmade' sometimes because a human runs the machine, 'handmade' should really mean it's put together by hand.

You posted a photo from ToysRUs, I think, not Etsy.

I fixed the link. ;) I don't know where the other one came from! Sorry!

In comparison, in my area the full size bed quilts, Amish handmade, go for well into the hundreds. I found a gorgeous Wedding Ring patterned one, loved it, wanted it, looked at the price :scared1: and left it in the store. It was just shy of $600.

I don't look at too many of them anymore but the ones I've seen of late are flannel backed.

I don't know anything about quilting. So - I can't help you with that.

Just wanted to say - I LOVE the quilt!!!

Yikes!

Yes, her room will be light pink, brown, and white! :)

The stitching DOES appear to go through all layers. Thanks for that tip!

I was given a GORGEOUS quilt from Things remembered with my dd's name on it for $56. (I looked it up for comparison purposes).

It is large and similar to this (it is little different):

http://www.thingsremembered.com/product/Sweet-Dreams-Baby-Quilt/158238.uts

It has my daughter's name stitched on it.

It is about twice as long as your quilt.

I have no idea if $60 is a good price or a bad price, but I did want to give you a cost-comparison. My husband's work gifted it to us. Evidently the owner used to hand make quilts for employees who had babies (or their spouse ;)). The company grew to a point where she could no longer do that and they switched to this and we love it as if she made it herself!

They have other designs as well.

I think thats a good price for something homemade. A mass produced quilt at babies r us can cost more then $60.

That is adorable! Thanks so much for sharing that!

I like that it is personalized!

I agree it's a pretty quilt, but from the photograph I can tell it is machine-stitched, not hand-stitched. Even at that, I still think $60 is a good price and that it is very *very* cute.

agnes!

the description says machine quilted

I'm incapable of using a sewing machine, so to me, it is impressive that it was "made with human hands" on a sewing machine!

Should I be wary because it was made with a sewing machine?

That is not a handmade quilt but a machine made quilt that is not mass produced. I am not sure of all the ends for a baby.

I spent more than that on a baby quilt from Pottery Barn for DD 10 years ago so I don't think it's much for a handmade one.

My mom has made me throws like this.

It's really, really easy to make if you can sew a straight seam on a sewing machine and don't mind dredging a lot of flannel "fluff" out of your dryer and washer.

I found instructions pretty easy on the interwebs: http://oldsite.quiltmaker.com/LRN2QLT/pdf/flannel_rag_quilt.pdf

As to being worth $60. . .That's something you have to decide. The colors are lovely and someone did sit at a machine and sew all the flannel squares together, then cut the fringes and then deal with the washing.

I've had throws like this. (Don't have one currently thanks to the chewing border collie.:guilty:) The fluff is pretty stable once you get it good and washed several times.
