Is this a REAL resale restriction?

Hi, all! This is my first post on the DVC boards!

DH and I have done some preliminary investigating many times about DVC but this time delving a little deeper...

Last week, a DVC (Disney direct) told me that if we purchase a resale contract, we will not be able to use those points at future DVC resorts, we will only be able to use the currently existing ones. So for example, we won't be able to stay at Reflections, if it is ever completed. Is this true?! I thought I was aware of all of the restrictions for resale, but I don't believe I have heard this one.

Thanks in advance,
Eeyore

This restriction was added in January 2019. So any resale contracts purchased before that were grandfathered in.

Oh, yikes, so it's true, then. So sad about that...

We purchased the minimum we had to from Disney (75 points at the time) to get the perks like the AP discount, food and merch discount, private events. Then we turned to the resale market. We bought our first resale contract just before the January 2019 (50 points) restriction addition, and then purchased another afterwards (110 points). So, at least we know that if we want to stay at Riviera or any newer resorts built we have some points to play with to be able to do so.

Yes DH and I were considering purchasing an initial small contract with Disney for the Blue Card but it would be the absolute minimum in terms of points, which right now is 100. That is a little to play with I guess.

Thanks for the help!

With Reflections likely out of the picture and no other DVC's on the horizon that I know of, I'm not sure you are missing too much with resale unless you want Riviera. If that be the case, get your 100 points and blue card and stay anywhere and buy a resale and stay at the L14 resorts. If an incredible DVC resort is built 10 years from now, you can rent and try it and then buy if you love it. You didn't know about this restriction and it took you by surprise, but if you think about it, you may feel it's not a big deal after all considering the $$$ you'll save!

If you buy resale first, you can take advantage of the member discounts later when getting the bluecard, they start at 125 pts I believe

I have 155 direct points so I can book Riveria and any future resorts.

I also have 400 additional resale points.
Just remember, only those 155 direct can be used at Rivieria or any new DVC location. Unless DVC makes needed change.

There is no guarantee you would ever stay there. Yes it's bigger but people who buy there for likely a huge premium will pretty much always stay there.
Don't buy into the debbie-downer, often repeated, doom and gloom phrases around here. The system is flexible and there will be opportunity to book the new DLR tower using qualified points from other resorts. Availability may not be consistent and snagging the reservation may not be easy ... but it will be possible.

FWIW, I currently have reservations at the much smaller DVC Grand Cal, using my SSR points, for: Oct, Nov, Dec and Feb/Mar.
