I see some threads on here about people scraping their popcorn ceilings off. I am living in an old apartment. We will be staying here at least 4 more years til the kids get thru school. The walls and ceilings are an plaster and I'm fighting some major cracks. I just got the walls dealt with, I think. But the ceiling is much harder. I can't lay on my back on scaffolding and get it fixed right. I need an inexpensive way to make it look better. There are two main rooms that are the worst. Do you think that putting on popcorn ceilings would be a terrible thing in a case like this?
Sheetrocking over it or putting in drop ceilings would be too expensive.

99.9% of the time the reason they popcorn a ceiling- is because then they can use "poor" workmanship up there. Its not easy to sand/mudd/sand a ceiling and thats the reason for popcorn....

Its NASTY I hate it, I scrapped it off my er- I mean- EX's house now I'm in an apartment with drop ceiling, which I dont like- but man its so much nicer than popcorn

You can rent a sprayer from most home improvement stores, just either remove everything or use heavy plastic....to apply the stuff- cheap, quick, but messy

:confused3 I'm glad you posted this because I am dealing with the same thing & don't know what to do!!

LOL.....well, I have a huge, expensive and gorgeous house....it has popcorn ceilings! I guess it is tacky and nasty....I never knew that until I started visiting the Dis! :rotfl2:

One of the big problems that people have with popcorn ceilings is that they used to have asbestos. Of course this isn't the case now, but for the older ceilings (prior to the mid 1970's, I think) it took a professional to remove the problem ceiling. We had one at our other house and I didn't care for it. When we had a little water damage it was a pain to fix. Might not be a bad option for you, though, in your situation.

never said it was tacky....it does get nasty its not the easiest thing to clean.

But I am 100% correct when I say that the reason most places have it is to cover up poor workmanship.........regardless of how HUGE, EXPENSIVE, and GORGEOUS your house is- ceilings are NOT done as well as walls

I don't think they look bad at all. I never thought it was a problem til here. I would have a problem with having a home built and them covering up shoddy work by using this. Because what if five years down the road you don't want it, or you have some sort of flood damage, etc. Then you not only have to remove the ceiling you have to fix the poor workmanship. BIL just re-sheetrocked his ceilings because they were so poorly done under the popcorn.
But if the choice is looking up at these cracks and bumps or a popcorn ceiling I'm thinking the popcorn would be better. I can rent the equiptment right at home depot.

ive never checked home depot- but i know we have a few small chain home improvement stores that have them listed on their big sign with rental fee's. You can get glitter- or "glass" type stuff to pix in .

I wasn't being sarcastic....I was being serious. I see that you bolded those words....it must have bothered you. Anyway...I'll leave this thread to you guys. :wave2:

I'm wondering if the glitter/glass would look tacky? I have a very small 3bedroom condo. So no vaulting ceilings here.

I have a sparkly popcorn ceiling. I like it!! It reminds me and the kids of Give kids the World Village, where they have this magical castle. The ceiling is covered with little silver stars that each child puts his name on. The funny thing is, we moved into the house right after Benji's wish trip, and when the boys finally took the time to notice the ceiling, they immediately said about GKTW!! Now that ceiling brings back memories of a really happy time for our family.

I doubt it bothered her, but it did come off as being...oh, I don't know.

Popcorn ceilings to me scream tacky, probably because the places that I'm used to seeing them are dorm rooms and Holiday Inns.

IMHO, they just don't look nice, no matter how expensive the walls holding them up are ;)

LOL, I guess I'd better not mention the spikes I've got on my livingroom ceiling. :earseek:
I hate them, but I'm worried to what it would look like if I just used something sharp to knock off all the tips.

It depends on how much you add. A little can look nice, but if you ever have to repaint, the glitter will be gone.
I would recommend that if anyone here who is considering getting popcorn ceilings smokes, then DON'T. It gets absolutely filthy from the smoke and repainting is a MAJOR pain.

Well, since you so nicely responded....the only reason I posted was to show that every type of house might have popcorn....not just crappy houses. I was surprised that it is considered TACKY...seeing how most of the houses here have it.

It doesn't bother me at all that you consider it as such....but I was just commenting about the things you learn on the dis.

HEY! I've got popcorn ceiling and I like them...so there! :umbrella:

We built our house, our ceiling joist are 18" O.C. vs the standard 24", it is rock solid because I live in Hurricane territory.

I never heard of popcorn ceilings being tacky before! :rotfl2:

I'm in my 3rd house and one of the only requirements for all 3 was "smooth ceilings required." I can't stand the popcorn ceiling they even bother me in hotel rooms.
