Is there anyone left who knows the difference?

This one is funny to me because JK Rowling (in the Harry Potter books) constantly uses was instead of were and it drives me crazy!

Could that be a British thing.

Can't think of all of them off the top of my head--but it seems there are some phrases that are grammatically correct in Britain but grammatically awkward if not incorrect here.
