silly Q I'm sure but we have the health insurance booklet and card from dh's work that covers us and I couldn't find anything in there that states I need to have the health cards or numbers to get treatment??

I'm sure they would be no good down there but.....

That being said, I always take ours. They don't take any room...and I just leave them in the room safe with passports, etc.

We've had to visit Dr's while in FL, and when calling to our insurance they always ask for our health card #'s. I'd take them or at least have the numbers with you!

We always take ours. We had to use them a couple of times and most benefits pay after OHIP coverage. What I mean is that OHIP pays up to a certain amount (what they figure it would cost in Ontario) and then the out-of-country insurance coverage kicks in. You may not know this because most of the insurance companies take care of collecting the OHIP part for you (Greenshield and Liberty Health do) but they need your numbers. CAA travel medical insurance made me make a trip to the OHIP office myself, file the claim and then file another claim with them - it was a pain in the butt. But to answer your question - yes you do need them.

Definately bring the cards and the phone numbers. Most insurance companies also want you to call them before you get treatment as well. I just went through all this in the DR, not quite the States but out of country expenses are out of country expenses no matter what other country you are in, I would think. Even when you go to a hospital outside your own province, you need to supply your health card and sign a transfer of payment from one province to the other.
