Is there an epidemic of kids falling off of verandah balconies?

1. The search tool on the DISboards sucks! It is really really bad!
Searching on Google with the parameter's of "disboards cruise xxx" (question in place of the x's) usually bring's up a DISboard thread that has relevance.

Ex Techie :)

Good suggestion using Google search as an alternative. Another method in Google is to use the site command:

site:http://www.disboards.com <search string>

stevenpensacola is notorious for starting threads that seemingly poke fun at people who post genuine questions.

Like this one.
Or this one.
Or... this one.
Or this one.

I personally find it offensive and rude, but others apparently are entertained. I just think that people should be able to post questions -- no matter how silly they may seem to others or how many times they've been asked -- without fearing being made fun of in the future. But... what do I know. :confused3

So he's DIS' version of the class clown? I miss the days when the DIS was one big family instead of an imitation of William McKinley High School.

Ask the same question as many times as you feel you need to. You don't have to use google. Part of the draw to the Dis is the interaction with people that you don't get from Google. It's not always about the "answer", but about the conversation that comes with the answer. You need new hobbies if you find making sarcastic threads is a good pastime.

From reading posts on this board through the years, you'd think that kids must be falling off the Disney ships by the dozens every day...:confused3

Just don't understand the fear that folks have about their kids falling from the ship?

Do your kids routinely climb over barricades next to obvious precipices?

Relax folks, your kids will be ok. The verandah is not a scary monster, trying to lure your kids over the edge with a bag of candy...

To my knowledge, no child has EVER fallen off a Disney balcony. Disney goes to great lengths to protect children - you can even have the furniture removed from your balcony so there is nothing to climb on.

for me it's about me going over :woohoo: lol
but for real I would not get a cabin with a verandah one I don't have the $$$ and two I just want to relex and with a verandah I just can not do that...we went to AKL and had a room with a balcony and my 3 year old DD would NOT stop trying to get her self up to "SEE"!

My kids are 22, 20, 16, and 12 and I had anxiety over the verandah!!!

I sat them all down pre-cruise and laid down the law about horsing around on the verandah. I still had bad dreams about one of them going overboard though.

Like wise if you need be negative with your responses! Think somebody is in need of a vacation. :)

I don't think anyone in this thread has suggested using Google to find your ultimate answer for every question.
BUT it, and other search engines can lead you to threads on the DISboards that you question may have been asked by many likeminded people!
And their thread, maybe recent, or deceased, can still be revived by asking for updates on the question, or new opinions once the topic has be tried and tested!
And a conversation often start's up when raised again, when someone ask's, and the thread is much more fruitful to those just after the information, and also those wanting to discuss a topic, to find out what others thought before.

Do you remember when the teen took up a dare and jumped off Deck 4 while docked? He was caught while coming back on board with no KTTW card and dripping wet. lol

I like when questions are asked over and over. Sometimes things change since the last time you have sailed and I'm learning more and more. :thumbsup2

It's called "Being a MOM" - something you'll never understand!!!!

However I do realize OP is just trying to get my goat...

Actually, I am a mom, and booked a verandah on our first cruise, but it never even crossed my mind that the kids would fall overboard, so I can see where the question is coming from, I've had the same question seeing the multiple times this one has been asked. My caveat, is that my kids were never climbers, so I am lucky enough not to have to view everything from that point of view.

You are lucky that you never had children that made you worry like that!

Everyone who thinks the OP, stevenpensacola, was being snarky, raise your hand... :wave2::wave2::wave2::wave2::wave2::wave2::wave2:

The rest of you......read his other posts.

Maybe he thought he was being funny, but I think it's insulting to everyone who comes here and asks a question.

If you want to be sarcastic, go find some other board to post on. The DIS is supposed to be a "safe" place.

I for one get tired of his stupid/snarky posts just to stir the pot wish the guy would be band by the Mods.

Wow, did you wake up today and wonder how you could randomly insult people?
I'm just wondering why ao many people on here want to be mean?
BTW- not at all afraid of it, but I couldn't care less if someone else chooses to be!

Well said.

One of my kids climbed over the balcony twice in WDW. We always stay in 1st floor rooms now and oceanview rooms on DCL. He was climbing out of his crib by 10 months, could wiggle out of his carseat at will (fun at 65mph on the highway), and climbed over the railings on escalators at the mall while we were going down them.

He will never be near a balcony as long as I'm with him! He's older now but I don't care. I spent years pulling him off of things by the feet :)

Note: see hyperbole

Hyperbole (play /haɪˈpɜrbəliː/ hy-pur-bə-lee;[1] Greek: ὑπερβολή, 'exaggeration') is the use of exaggeration as a rhetorical device or figure of speech. It may be used to evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression, but is not meant to be taken literally. I apologize if you don't get it.

Ouch! :headache: ...that hurt...I've never been called "notorious before...

If I may...

This post was NOT intended to poke fun at anyone. I confess to reading a recent post which made me think...have I EVER heard of a kid falling overboard on a DCL Ship? Could not think of one. That's all that's behind the post.

You can bet any modern cruise ship, DCL especially, has gone overboard...well, maybe not the best choice of words, to make sure that their ships are safe for children.

I've got three incredible kids, so I'm all about kids safety...none of my kids have ever even had a broken bone...but I also taught my kids boundaries, common sense, and to obey...so I've never really worried that they were going to do something reckless. Did I keep my eye on them, sure did...but did not lose sleep that my son was going to fashion a skeleton key out of a spoon in order to pick the lock and build a ladder out of bedsheets so he could scale the verandah wall. (And no...I'm not accusing anyone of not being a good parent...so don't go there).

My point is enjoy your cruise...don't sweat every detail...Use common sense. You'll have a great time.

To those that really want info on the verandah...here is my DS on the Wonder. He was 7 at the time

AlexWonder.jpg

He is active but not a big climber. He had been given a lecture about no fooling around, trying to climb the plexiglass, etc. I wasn't worried about him at all. Then the next thing I knew, he was trying to see the side of the ship below us and because he couldn't see over the top of the railing (down) very well, he pulled the chair over and climbed on it to see over the rail better. I was standing right next to him and as soon and I realized he was going to stand instead of sit, I had him get down from the chair and explained to him why he can't do that. In his mind, he was not goofing off or doing anything he wasn't supposed to, he just wanted to see better. He never did it again after that and we have had no problems since (he has been on the Dream for 7 nights since then).

So even if they are older and not playing around...they need to be watched. And I completely understand parents concern about verandahs.
But I will still keep booking verandahs because our family loves them so much (and DS has proved since that happened that he learned his lesson about verandah safety).

Too bad no one can detect hyperbole in the written word.
