Is there a way to prop up a flat screen TV?

I have an old wall unit similar to this one, made for the older style TVs, not the flat screens, so it's several inches deep:

The 32" flat screen TV I'm thinking of buying would just fit height-wise in the TV space, without the stand. With the stand, it's 2" too high. Is there another way to prop up the TV? attaching to the back wall would recess the TV too far back. And I'd really prefer my TV to sit in the unit, NOT attached to the wall.

I'm confused... if the television is just barely able to fit height-wise, are you sure it will fit width-wise?

Regardless, the answer to the question is going to vary from television to television, and generally, for the one's I've seen, there is no inexpensive way to accomplish what you're aiming for, safely.

I was afraid of that. I was going to take out the shelves on the side, so it would fit width-wise. I guess, time to look for a new cabinet too.

Also be sure that the cabinet doesn't block venting of the television. If it is a tight fit in an enclosed box-like space, you could end up trapping too much heat, and that could cause problems.
