Is There A Trick To Avoid Food Poisioning?

I got food poisining at the Plaza Restaurant... Ok here is the scenerio: 6 adults 3 Children, I am the only one who ordered a salad. 2 chx sandwiches eleimatated the chicken. So we decided it must have been the salad part.

It is funny because I got a case of severe poisoning in 1997 from cheese and lettuce. I have never been so sick in my life! I actually had to go to the ER and spend the night in the hospital because of food poisoning. I went to a mexican food chain here in Atlanta, which is notorious for food poisoning. I ate lunch with my mom. She ordered an enchilada and I got a taco with lettuce and cheese. I learned from the doctor in the ER that you can get staph food poisoning from eating lettuce and cheese that has sat out for awhile.

I never seem to have any problems with salads either, what does me in often is seafood, especially shrimp! I love it, but I rarely order it unless I'm close to home!

I can't believe I had to read this far into this thread to have someone mention the food that I got sick on at WDW. THE FISH!! It was at Crystal Palace buffet dinner. And the fish was hot on the buffet. It was covered with some kind of topping made with peppers, I think. I thought it tasted a little "bitter" but I just thought it was the topping or something.

Nine of us were there and I was the only one that had the fish and I was the only one that got sick. I got sick within the hour but we were leaving from there to head to Ocala to visit a friend the next day. I managed to hold it in until we got there.

I've never seen the movie "The exorcist", but I've seen clips of Linda Blair turning her head around and I think she also projectile vomitted at one point, didn't she? Well,................let's just say, it's a joke between my DH and I that that night, I was Linda Blair!!!! Suffice to say...........I was sick as a dog scrubbing every inch of the bathroom in the Hyatt hotel in Ocala,FL one October night around 2am!! OH MY WORD......I have NEVER been so sick in all my living days! :scared: :crazy2:

I feel it was just a fluke though. But I will be shy about the fish on the buffets from now on.

There was just a warning about Dole salads in my area and food poisioning. Not too long ago a restaurant on LI was serving bad salads and lots of people got sick. When salads are pre washed and pre packaged, like I am sure WDw uses, there is a greater risk of bacteria.

I have never gotten sick at WDW (knock on wood) but I have been very very sick from restaurant foods. I got e-coli from a seared tuna salad. Food poisioning from chicken parm, an intestinal parasite..from god knows where..but the dr asked me if I was traveling in Asia ! I also got a nasty case of food poisioning from chinese take out...steamed chicken and string beans.

It's strange but you always KNOW what made you ill. It never tastes bad when you're eating it...but you just know.

"It's strange but you always KNOW what made you ill. It never tastes bad when you're eating it...but you just know."

I would disagree with this. Unless you have a blood test done at the hospital I don't think you can know for sure if you even have food poisoning let alone what food did it to you. Look at how many people will say it was the "mayo" that made them sick. The fact is --it probably wasn't. I don't think you can know for sure what made you sick (assuming it was food borne) unless you call the restaurant and find that many others have called in sick after eating the same dish and/or the hospital confirms the same kind of reports and confirm that you have food poisoning.

I think sometimes we can look back, though, and logically deduce what it was (which is what she's saying). Like, okay, it wasn't that it was high in fat or rich - this was OFF and I should've realized. Or, I was the only one who ate that and I'm the only one who got sick. And, sometimes you can feel it when it hits your stomach - that "hmm - that wasn't right" feeling midmeal.

But, I 100% agree - sometimes the safest thing to get is something that's distributed as a pre-cooked item (fried, fast food, etc). No one ever got sick on french fries that I know of. LOL

DH got SEVERLY ill from an italian meat sandwich (counter service) that they used to serve in Future World at EPCOT. It was horrible. He became dehydrated and we had to call the ambulance. He lost 11 pounds over night. He was the strangest shade of gray/green that I have ever seen. The worst part was we were supposed to fly home that day, but there was a big storm in the northeast and the flight was cancelled. Our luggage went to Maine without us. We had to go back to the resort with no luggage. They offered DH a shaving kit for our "troubles". Yes, that's just what he felt like doing, shaving. Gotta love DELTA.

I just don't get this thread. I have NEVER gone somewhere worried about getting food poisoning. :confused3 I mean I guess you can get it almost anywhere, what makes WDW different?

The only thing with Forever42's statement that I would hesitate to go along with would be the overexertion part. Now, if you are talking dehydration on a very hot day--yep, I'll buy that.

I did mention this because it's happened to us, plus we've heard tons of people say things like this. Once we did Boma breakfast in late May, and then proceeded to trek around Animal Kingdom - we felt nauseated and almost vomited a few times because of the heat and our full stomachs.

I also remember a family who said they went to Chef Mickeys in July and immediately went to the Magic Kingdom, and said that they all got "food poisoning" by the afternoon because they felt sick.

I should have said overexertion+heat+too much food does it, instead of overexertion - sometimes working too hard is a good thing after a meal. :)

Oh, and to those mentioning salads, that's a very common vector for both true food poisoning and food intoxication. It's one reason I'd love to see lettuces being irradiated!

Years ago when my son was a toddler, we ordered a room service pizza at the Contemporary. Within approx 3-4 hours both my husband and I were violently sick - continuously over and over all night long. Thank goodness that we didn't feed any to our son who was sleeping at the time. I should have gone to a hospital - it was that bad. I can't imagine what it would have done to a baby. We were so bad that we had to have a doctor come to the room. He gave me a shot to stop the vomiting. Disney never admitted it was the pizza - they claimed that people got sick all the time from overdoing it at the parks. Of course they weren't going to admit that they're serving room service food poisoning! It was an awful experience and to this day, I'm grateful that my son didn't eat any of this.

Within the past year, my husband got sick on squid that he ate at Spoodles. He claims it was raw (he's had squid before). But with seafood, you just dont know if its bad or if you've developed an allergy, so I can't say for sure that it was food poisoning.

The OP of this thread probably reads many dining reports on th DIS where someone claims to have been made ill by the food and they are understandably concerned. After more than 19 trips to the world as a family and many, many meals eaten in WDW restaurants--we have never blamed becoming sick on the food. We have had two kids vomit during different trips but never believed it was from something they ate. We figured they picked up a little "bug" or something...

I gotta say too that the OP shouldn't worry about what may or may not happen and truly you can't know if what you are going to eat will MAYBE make you sick. It is more likely you will get sick just from the sheer #s of people you are coming in contact with at Disney.

Yes...I have had food poisoning and spent time in hospital while at Disney.

Yes...my kids have had bad ear infections while at Disney.

Yes...WE ARE GOING BACK!

We have all had these same things while staying home and going to school....would much rather be at Disney.

Just take precautions....Wash Hands, Wash Hands, Wash Hands, Wash Hands!!!! :paw: :paw: :paw: :paw:

ITA! :confused3 I've never heard of it being a particular issue at WDW. I'll be eating whatever catches my fancy as usual, thanks!! :goodvibes

We have been several times and to most of the restaurants there and never had a problem. We don't even mind the water. It doesn't seem that different from what we are used to at home. I would just be as observant as normal when I go to a restaurant to eat and not worry too much about it.

do you get food poisioning a lot or have weakend immune sysytem? i have only had it one time( not at disney) and think most times you should be fine with basic hygiene..
maybe i am just fortunate but other than that i don't see why you'd have a problem. it really isn't any different thatn any place else

don't know if this is really true . i was hospitalized the one time i actually got food poisioning and even they couldn't say what did it for sure( course most of the "remnants" were gone by the time i got to the hspt. )

::MickeyMo I guess it all depends on how you react to foods. Been to Disney over 10 times and never had food poisoning. ::MinnieMo

We've been to Disney dozens of times over the last few decades, and I've gotten sick twice, once from swallowing the water at Wet 'N Wild, and once, who knows where inside Disney. The second time I had gastroenteritis, and got so dehydrated I ended up at the Celebration Hospital.

The two things I learned:

1. I will never, ever go to Wet 'N Wild again.

2. The Celebration hospital is very spiffy with nice nurses.

To this day we have no idea where I caught gastroenteritis in Disney, but we wash our hands a lot, normally, becuase we have kids and just chalked it up to bad luck.

You might want to look into a 'pro-biotic' such as Culterelle or many other types sold at health food stores. They help maintain the healthy bacteria in your system. These are similar to the cultures found in yogurt.

Not just Dole but any of those packaged salads that say they are pre washed and triple washed. You still have to WASH this lettuce throughly!!!! I get grossed out when I see people just dump the bag into the bowl and add dressing  . That's probally what most restaurants do. I read about a girl whose mother did this and the lettuce had e-coli and the girl was deathly ill and ended up on kidney dialysis :sad2: .
As far as why the OP wants to know about food poisoning it could be many reasons, maybe they have a cronic illness or have recently been sick or had cancer treatments and have a weakened immune system, or maybe they just don't like getting sick  . Personally I can't remember getting really sick at WDW but my DH did several years ago, it was at MaMa Melroses. He was the only one who got sick but he was also the only one who ordered what he did, I can't remember what it was but it was something cheesy :crazy2: . Like other posters have said, Wash you Hands (you would be surprised how many people don't) and carefully choose your food. And don't go on the TOT right after you eat!!!!!!! :scared1: :faint: :scared1:
