Just curious if anyone knows....Is there a time limit on cashing a personal check? I wrote a check on 18 Dec 03, here it is 23 Jan 04 and it has not been cashed yet. I had DH ask the lady who took the check (it was written to one of the military squadron's spouse's group here on the base) and she said that she gave it to the lady in charge and that she should be depositing it into their account. That was 2wks ago. And still nothing......

6mos is the limit, BUT one time on Judge Judy someone cashed a check after a year. The check writer sued the company who cashed the check and LOST. Judge Judy said the lady received her goods she should expect to pay for them.

Thanks for the replies.....I'm not trying to get out of paying for anything...I just wish they would hurry up and cash it. I want to delete it from my books already. If I would of known it would take this long then I would of just paid cash for it. Never had to wait more then 2wks, lol, but I hardly ever write checks. I don't like checks.

6 months is correct, for most bank's "policies". Judge Judy however made a legal decision, I believe.

I, too, hate when people hang on to one of my checks. I can handle one statement but, when I get a second statement and, it still isn't cashed, I start calling. :listen:

I was told the rule is 6 months if your checking account is with a bank. My checking account is with a credit union and was told that there is NO TIME LIMIT on a check drawn on a credit union account.

Oh, that's great. My account is with a credit union. Sheesh! I don't think that check will ever go through. :(

Just a thought-while it is inconvient for you is the lady in questions spouse deployed? Does she have children? Does she work? If the answers to all those questions is yes she may simply be so overwhelmed that she has not had time to get to the bank to deposit it or she may be waitning until she has all the monies from the fund raiser turned in so she does not have to make multiple trips. (I have been an FRG treasurer in the past). Why don't you give her a call and see what you can do to help her out?
