The Beach area directly in front of Vero Beach is not lifeguarded.
However the Disney CM that work the beach rentals get a heads up on what is going on. There is a board that they mark beach conditions on.
Directly next door there is a public entry called Wabasso Beach. They have lifeguards . You can see the lifeguard area from the Disney area. They may have color coded warning flags out for their beach area.
Yellow means use caution.
A Blue flag is a problem flag for Stinging jellyfish/ Portuguese Man of War present.
Red flad means: Do Not Swim.
Most jellyfish do not sting or leave a very mild sting. The Portuguese Man of War and a few other species are another story. STAY AWAY from anything resembling the picture above. The tenacles can be many ft long. They can sting for many days later after being washed ashore. The Man of War is usually found in the tropics and Gulf Stream which is not far offshore from the VB area. Some people pick them up thinking they are pretty. Sorry not down there currently, so can't give you a 1st hand account. Cannot tell you what type are in the area right now. Maybe tennis nut will chime in. Will call the friends tomorrow and see what the deal is. I do know that the Moon jelly fish is common in the area (very mild sting if any). and there was a large kill off of those a few weeks ago. (thousands washed up on the beaches in Brevard county just to the north) It may be nothing at all. They can be few and far between which is normal. Its the Ocean.
Treatment If Stung
Find a LifeGuard or CM DO NOT RUB area.
DO NOT pull off tenacles if on skin with your hand. Besides stinging you also, the stinging cells should be neutalized first
Rinse with vinegar.
If stung around the eyes, use saline solution
Whatever you do do not rinse with FRESH water. This can release more venom from the stinging cells.
A paste of baking soda can also be used to help. Antihistimines and/or ice pack can help. Keep on the lookout for any allergic reactions.
Try not to let this scare you. Hopefully the Beach will just be fine. If things don't work out for going in the Ocean, you have a nice pool and poolslide and a kids area to enjoy.
