Hi, we are going to VB in a couple of weeks. I have just looked at Tommy's site for HH is there a similar one for Vero.?I would like some ideas for restaurants, plays or movies, or anything else a group of 3 mature people can enjoy.

I'm sure someone will link you to a sight.

I know there is a community theatre there that is QUITE popular.

You may want to look up the Indian River Chamber of Commerce or Visitors Bureau.

We're going next week (!) for the first time, and Frommer's site had restaurant and activity suggestions. There is a Capt Hiram's site (www.Hirams.com/index.cfm?Method=MoreFun) that has a list of local activities as well (with links), but none that I know of like Tommy's site.

We're planning on doing the Environmental Learning Center and McKee Botanical Gardens, Mel Fischer Treasure Museum and maybe some Kayaking - if we end up wanting to leave the resort...

Have a great time!

I wouldn't recommend Capt Hirams. We went twice. Once was just okay, the other time was horrible. Not clean etc. There are some other wonderful seafood restaurants in town and along the coast. You just have to drive a bit. We also don't like Shutter's so maybe we are too fussy.
Thanks for the info about places to visit. That will come in handy.

I haven't heard many good things about Capt Hirams - but their website has a good list of activities...

We were thinking about going to Ocean Grill - have you eaten there?

We did go to Ocean Grill two nights ago. I thought the stone crab was very good. Our meals were very tasty. The price is $$$.

I would like to offer one suggestion for something to do on site.

Monday at 9:30 am , Maryann leads a Pelican Island Bike Tour:
It was wonderful!!! Scenic 10 mile ( 5 each way) bike hike to the Nations 1st Wildlife Refuge.
Maryann was very knowledgeable and led a leisurely pace. It was great fun to bike and meet new people. The youngest that can go is 12. Maryanne provided snacks and water once we were there and some history of the Refuge. The bridge at the Refuge lists all Refuges in the US. There is even a Kentucky one....I didn't know :).

We have had a great time in Vero ( our first).
The tennis Pro used to be my instructor in Kentucky ...small world.
He is very good and a great teaching pro. I highly reccomend his services.

The jelly fish have been abundant around the shores so that has kept my kids ( 12 and 15 ) from getting in the ocean as much as they would like.

The weather had been perfect.

We will be coming back to Vero in the future.

Susan

Glad you are enjoying your stay tennisnut. Don't want to scare you, but also watch while walking on the beach that you do not step on or pick up any Jellyfish. They can sting long after washing ashore. Particularly of concern is the Portuguese Man of War.

We are due to arrive at VB this Sunday with 4 kids ages 9,9,7,and 6. With my luck one of them is sure to stung. What exactly do you do if you do get stung? Are their lifeguards on the beach and are they equipped to deal with jellyfish stings?

Any suggestion would be appreciated. We don't have any of these types of critters in Lake Ontario!

Thanks,
Mary

There are no lifeguards on the beach.

The pool is not that far away. If anything did happen I'm sure someone could be up at the pool to snatch a lifeguard in a matter of seconds-I'm assuming it is okay for them to treat someone on the beach and not just at the pool.

Please don't laugh at the following comment. I am embarrassed enough just mentioning it:rolleyes: but aren't you supposed to "tinkle" on someone who has been stung by a jellyfish or is that just an untruth that has been told through the years?

I swear I heard that somewhere. Anyway, I'm not gonna take this any further.

Someone, PLEASE tell me if this is true or not.

ncligs, if you read this I can't wait to see what smiley you come up with.:D

This is the "PG" version.........I sent you a PM with the "R" version.

The Beach area directly in front of Vero Beach is not lifeguarded.
However the Disney CM that work the beach rentals get a heads up on what is going on. There is a board that they mark beach conditions on.
Directly next door there is a public entry called Wabasso Beach. They have lifeguards . You can see the lifeguard area from the Disney area. They may have color coded warning flags out for their beach area.
Yellow means use caution.
A Blue flag is a problem flag for Stinging jellyfish/ Portuguese Man of War present.
Red flad means: Do Not Swim.

Most jellyfish do not sting or leave a very mild sting. The Portuguese Man of War and a few other species are another story. STAY AWAY from anything resembling the picture above. The tenacles can be many ft long. They can sting for many days later after being washed ashore. The Man of War is usually found in the tropics and Gulf Stream which is not far offshore from the VB area. Some people pick them up thinking they are pretty. Sorry not down there currently, so can't give you a 1st hand account. Cannot tell you what type are in the area right now. Maybe tennis nut will chime in. Will call the friends tomorrow and see what the deal is. I do know that the Moon jelly fish is common in the area (very mild sting if any). and there was a large kill off of those a few weeks ago. (thousands washed up on the beaches in Brevard county just to the north) It may be nothing at all. They can be few and far between which is normal. Its the Ocean.

Treatment If Stung

Find a LifeGuard or CM DO NOT RUB area.
DO NOT pull off tenacles if on skin with your hand. Besides stinging you also, the stinging cells should be neutalized first
Rinse with vinegar.
If stung around the eyes, use saline solution
Whatever you do do not rinse with FRESH water. This can release more venom from the stinging cells.
A paste of baking soda can also be used to help. Antihistimines and/or ice pack can help. Keep on the lookout for any allergic reactions.

Try not to let this scare you. Hopefully the Beach will just be fine. If things don't work out for going in the Ocean, you have a nice pool and poolslide and a kids area to enjoy.:)

Nick I knew that was coming.:)

Floridafam: Seriously rumor has it that it helps take the pain away. Meat tenderizer works as well. You never know when you have to improvise:

Friends Episode

Back on "main" topic: Here are a few links with area info:

Sebastian, FL

Vero Beach

Treasure Coast

My ds(5) got stung last year. He picked one up (stung his hands and fingers) and then dropped it on his foot (got stung there too) DH immediately rushed him up to the lifeguards at the pool. They had a special ointment there. Then dh and our friend (an ER Doc) headed off to the Walgreens and bought a few over the counter treatments. (Lanacane was one) The first day the stings were very painful, red, swollen but each day they got better. I had seen the jellyfish earlier on my beach walk but forgot to warn the others. Even dh didn't know what it was until it was too late
:(

Be careful everyone!

Does "Safe Sea" keep jelly fish from stinging? I ordered some for out cruisefor the sea lice, but we're going to Vero next week and I'm thinking I should bring it if it would help...

I'd like to add:

All the times we have been to VB, we have never seen a jellyfish so don't let it worry you too much.

Just be careful. If you're going with kids, show them a picture of a jellyfish and tell them not to pick one up.

You'll have a wonderful time.

We saw and experienced the jellyfish - the purplish/blue ones (not tons.......but a few here and there) during the last week of March in 2002. We will be at VB from 4/20 - 4/23 this year. I will be on jellyfish alert and promise to post about it when I get back. They were very different from the ones I used to see at the Jersey shore when I was a little kid. (those were clear) I worry about little kids picking them up  when they are washed up on shore but will remind my whole family again to be careful.
