is there a proper amount to be spent?

I haven't spent huge amounts on my dgd.

I bought large gifts for the showers but because there are 4 sets of grandparents, three sets of great grandparents and numerous sets of aunts and uncle; she has way more than can ever be used with all of us only spending small amounts. Besides I am saving for her first trip to Disney!

To really answer your question, no. I would never expect my mom to spend a large amount on any grandchild or great grandchild, she just doesn't have it to spend.

It just depends on the grandparent, and their income. I'm a spender, and would gladly run up credit card debt for a grandchild. But everyone's different. My folks don't have a lot of money, so aren't spenders.

The "proper" amount is the amount one can afford - and only the person doing the giving can determine what that amount is..

My grandmother bought us a big ticket item (I had her first great-grandchild), as did my parents, but they could afford to do so. If finances aren't an issue, I don't know why being a grandparent would make them spend less. I was blessed that she lived until the age of 95, got to meet all of my children, and my 3 oldest still remember her.
