I heard there is a 1 time forgiveness per member if you have to cancel last minute and can't use the points. I made the reservation for my sister who has checkin this sun her DH has a biopsy on tues just came about yesterday, at BWV 120 points. I know they go into holding but they expire end of jan and DVc's seem to be booking up .we know they are booked for dec and quite a bit in jan .should I take this 1 time option or let them go into holding and hope I can rent them for jan which won't be till nov 60 days out

I recall reading a post on here about this and I saved the text of it in my DVC notes in case we ever had to do it. I do not recall the poster though. Here's the text of his post:

I made a mistake with banking deadlines this year and I had just over a quarter of our annual points that could not be banked.
I was in the process of renting those points to another member and transferring them back in July when the "new" rule about transfers was put in place so that was nixed by Disney.
I have been very busy, so I hadn't been able to re-rent the points and was facing the loss of them next week (we have an October use year).
Friday I logged on to see if there was anyone looking for last minute reservations that I might be able to rent to, and I stumbled across a thread about the "one time exemption" to banking rules. I decided to give it a try, since we really could use the points - we have a big trip planned for February and friends of ours have decided they would like to come along as well.
Yesterday I called member services, politely explained my situation and after a brief stay on hold, they came back and told me that the points would be banked to next year. With all of 4 days to spare before they expired.
Because I was at the 0% banking range, they could only go back one increment - to the 25% limit, so I did lose 2 points, but that is MUCH better than I was.
I've been reading these boards for YEARS - but for some reason in my own situation of facing expiring points, I had totally forgotten the option to use the one-time exception until I checked here.

Is this what you are asking about?

I used it so many years ago I bet they no longer have a record of it. But it does exist

And probably won't continue to exist if we keep talking about it on these Boards!! :rolleyes1

I would just caution, that as DVC continues to grow in membership, this allowance may not be available.

It is not granted by our POS, and those are the rules that count. They do not have to do it and if they do, I would count it as Pixie Dust and not an entitlement. These situations are normally handled on a case by case.

Extra :wizard: for your points.

That was my post.

Mer1126, I hope you could bank the points, but I'm not sure if the banking exemption extends to being able to recover points that would have gone into holding (i.e. when you cancel less than 31 days out).

Does anyone have any info on whether that can be accomplished?

One bit of advice I would give you is that since this is NOT a stated or written benefit, make sure you approach it with the right attitude. Calmly and politely explain your situation to the rep from Member Services and say that you had heard of there sometimes being exceptions made for members who find themselves in a jam.

I think it could go a long way to getting MS to help you out if you don't act like you are entitled.

I don't believe there is any such exemption for the situation you are talking about. The "super-secret one-time exemption" applies to banking deadlines, not cancellations.

However, as Ted suggested above, approach MS with your explanation and see if they can do anything to help you. The "book" answer is no, but you never know until you ask.

I got lucky and rented the reservation so they will check in today only lost $185.00 not too bad better than 120 points

This is what happened to me.

I had last week booked at SSR. My dad is terminally ill and has taken a turn for the worse so I was afraid to leave him and my mom last week for a WDW vacation (hospice has been called in and all of that).

When I called to cancel, I didn't even tell her why I was cancelling. She voluntarily gave me an Email address to email and "plead my case" so to speak.
I feel like they may do this so the operator you cancel with doesn;t have to bother hearing your "cancellation stories" or try to make some sorta of decision. This way they can just refer you to people who read the stories and make decisions on what to do about the points.

I got lucky. I was very thankful. I was supposed to check in on Oct. 9 and had just gotten my points Oct.1. This was my first DVC experience. I wanted to experience SSR but, it was still a good DVC experience considering my situation.

My dad made it through the week but my mom lost her 2 year cat on Thursday (very quickly--like a heartattack or something). I was extra glad to be here for her.

But if they allow it, it also moves holding account points to regular points which would indirectly apply to cancellations.

We had ressies at VWL beginning 22 Sep 01. DH's leave was cancelled due to 9/11 and everything that went with it for the military. Our points were due to expire 30 Sep 01. The let us move the vacation to the first week of December. We also had a cruise scheduled (paid with cash), which they let us move as well. Perhaps it was a special case for 9/11? Dunno. All I know is that it was greatly appreciated, and gave me warm fuzzies about buying into to DVC. :goodvibes
