Is the Magic in trouble??

Talked to my friend and she says you and PP are wrong and she don't know why you are trying to down play it (Disney plant maybe??) I don't know you so I am going to have to stick with her account.

FYI, my family and I were on this same cruise. I can assure you that it was no where near as bad as what your friend suggest. We were not adrift for "hours", and no, there was no where near 50% of the people sick.

We had power restored within about 10 mins, and propulsion back in less than two hours. The first day at sea was rough, made worse by a stabilizer issue (which caused the power outage to begin with, btw), but all was smooth sailing on Monday (second sea day).

On Wednesday, there apparently was a minor outbreak of an illness (a certain number of people were sick) and Disney did implement measures to combat it, but to suggest 50%? Ludicrous.

In all, it was a great trip.

I joined just to say that I was on this sailing and everything in drclaws' post is correct. In particular, some passengers and crew were seasick early on, but it certainly was much less than 50%. An infection was reported for at least one other passenger, resulting in the almost total elimination of self-service food and beverage options for most of the cruise causing unusual lines, and there was a med evac by a U.S. coast guard helicopter from CC.

Otherwise, the cruise was great, and we'll be back on the Magic in June.

Not to take this off topic again, but which sailing in June? We're on the June 2nd and June 10th. Our first BTW.

I was just checking the CDC website, they have to report cases to the CDC if more than 2% get sick. So we can see the number of reported cases of GI issues in 2 weeks.

Yup...all true. After a year long anticipation of this cruise the rough seas and our nephew's 24 hour quarantine due to a bug caught in the Vibe teen club...yeah...took the wind out of our sails. I forgot about the power outage...yes, did occur. No air conditioning for hours too. I felt like we were in a Cuban all-inclusive! We did make the best of it...but sadly our first cruise ever will be our last. Never again. Nothing against DCL...just that the cruise solidified any apprehension I ever had about cruising. Oh and yes, there was a tragic death on our shore excursion. Sadly the man passed away from a heart attack. Seeing his distraught family taken away by the rhino riders was very sad. Nothing the first aiders could do...they all did their best. Felt terrible for the family. Guest Services called our room later that night with apologies and offering us counselling should we need it (thankfully our neice and nephew were not traumatized from the events and old enough to understand) but they also told us to keep it "confidential" to respect the family. I thought that was a bit fishy as if they were trying to keep it on the downlow. Again the death was totally not anyone's fault and all did the best they could given the situation...but just added to the week. My heart and condolences to the family. Terrible way to vacation.

Didn't the Carnival Splendor leave 3,299 Guest's without power, air conditioning, hot water or telephone service despite only being 2 years and 3 months old?

I can't see the correlation between day visitors to the parks, (massive open space) and the Guest's on a cruise ship, (confined space) but your entitled to your opinion.

The Carnival Splendor did have a major fire. I was just pointing out that a new ship can still have problems leading to a power outage, just the same as a middle aged or old ship!

I don't think you have a lesser chance of outbreaks etc just because you are on a newer ship.

In the context of infection, a older ship that is poorly maintained will be more prone to infection's.
I will agree with Mickey2000 on that point.

That is why the CDC, and USCG inspections are very important to protect the public. People are people, and standards can slip.
The Magic didn't have a bad, but not the usual high 90's report she usually get's on her last inspection, and a few poor hygiene issues and maintenance issues were reported in the galley's.
The CDC advised and the ship put procedures in place to rectify those issues.
Now if they do not keep up that standard and make sure those issues have gone, the next CDC inspection will be a day the crew and officers will never forget, and I would expect a few early vacations for the responsible CM's.

I wouldn't see it as any reason to panic or think the ship is unhealthy, just area's to improve on. And a 6 month old ship can have hygiene issues, just as much as a 13 year old ship.

I will agree with Mickey2000 on that point.

My purely undocumented intuition would say more human beings = more chances for infection. I will take my chances with 2,500 people vs. 6,000 on the newer bigger ships.

My guess would be, that while ship hygiene is important, that most infection issues are caused by people who do not follow standard germ common sense. More people = more people not washing their hands in the bathroom, more people already infected boarding the ship, etc.

That sounds like an awful trip.everything I would fear. Rough seas, infection and an awful accident. I'm leaving for my magic cruise and that makes me put things in perspective. Everything may not go as planned. But jeez, I hope I don't your luck and have almost everything suck. Sorry to hear you had so much trouble.

Just got off the Magic today and I am proud to report, all is fine with the Magic. No problems on our 7 day Western Caribbean cruise. Seas were a little rougher at times than I expected, but the motion sickness medicine given at Guest Services worked perfectly.
