Is That A Crab Leg In Your Pocket? 10 Days of Dining with Pics!

I'm so happy you're here! Thank you so much! I always love your reviews, too!

We loved AKL too. We are going back for 5 nights in October (to WDW), and we are considering switching to AKL. It's so far away from everything, but we just don't really mind. It was just so awesome being right there, seeing all the animals and feeling like we got a real break from the hustle and bustle of the parks...

Plus we still need to try Boma or Jiko, or both!

Totally agree. It was my first ever deluxe hotel and I enjoyed it so much. I didn't think the bus ride was that long for any park with the exception of Downtown Disney.

Was the sunrise safari for AKL people only??

That is so funny about the lions "activity". At least it was better than them sleeping!

After our Sunrise Safari breakfast at Pizzafari, we headed over to Expedition Everest and grabbed a FP.

Here is the lake from that side of AK in the morning:

Ah so pretty.

We had a little time, so we took a quick ride on Dinosaur and then went on the Maharajah Jungle Trek.

Oh how we love to see these bats.

We saw the tigers, managed to ride Kali River Rapids, used our FPs for Everest, and then it was time for lunch. Whew did that backwards segment leave me feeling a little :worried:. Don't worry though, it turned out all I needed was a nice cold tea.

With a paper straw. :scratchin

We were excited to see the inside of the restaurant, because we'd never been here before.

We were seated upstairs:

We liked all the different lighting fixtures.

The details and theming were great:

On a different day, DP might have tried the mahi mahi, and I might have tried the salmon, but we were in the mood to share with one another, and I don't eat mahi, and she doesn't eat salmon.

So instead, I chose the shrimp:

This was a nice presentation.

It was kind of dark where we were sitting, so here it is from another angle.

These shrimp were not very photogenic. :lmao:

The shrimp were good. I felt like they could have included a couple more for the price. The veggies were just ok. They had a strong ginger taste, which I didn't like. DP enjoyed them more than I did. She ate most of them. The white rice was just plain, white rice. Not bad, but not exciting.

DP ordered the lo mein.

This picture so does not indicate the actual size of this meal. This was a huge portion, and by huge, I mean definitely enough for two people, all by itself, with no appetizers or desserts. We both ate as much as we could, but we still had one person's helping left over.

Neither of us thought this was very good. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't flavorful or what we were hoping for. The Asian noodles at Sunshine Seasons are 5 times better than this dish.

So far we weren't too impressed with the food at Yak & Yeti. Would our dessert save the day?

We ordered the famous, highly acclaimed fried cream cheese wontons:

I know I'm about to alienate or offend a whole group of people by saying this, but we just really didn't care for these...

Our favorite part was:

The little tiny dish of vanilla ice cream.

There was nothing wrong with the wontons, but to us, they just didn't live up to the hype. The wontons were not very sweet, the sauce was overpowered by the taste of old grease, and there wasn't enough ice cream to make up for it.

We had been looking forward to eating these for two years, and our dreams of falling in love were dashed.

In spite of our lack of enthusiasm, we did manage to eat every last bite, so don't anybody worry that we let these go to waste.

I wish I had tried the mango pie. In all the reviews I've seen, people love it, and it looks so good.

As a whole, we really weren't very impressed with the food at this restaurant. It is possible someday we'll make our way back, simply because it was a nice, cool break in the middle of the hot part of the day at the hottest park.

We are Landry's members, so at least we got a few points for our lack luster meal.

Up next, happy hour in the lounge. And more desserts. :wave2:

Wonderful update!! The Sunrise Safari is on my Disney "Bucket List", so I'm excited for your side-review :)

I will say this about Yak & Yeti...we have gone there every trip since they opened. The first two times were terrific (had the same shrimp dish you had). Then when we went last September (had the shrimp again - I am a woman who doesn't seem to deviate, do I? :lmao: ), I noticed the shrimp not being so good. Also had the wontons for dessert and didn't seem to like them as much as I had in the past. All in all, not that impressed...I am wondering if the chef changed recently :confused3 I hope Yak & Yeti's food quality isn't declining because I really love that place. :goodvibes

Great reviews. Can't wait for dessert & drinks review (2 of my favorite things :thumbsup2 ).

We are thinking of staying at Wilderness Lodge in October...all the monorail and boardwalk area resorts are booked for our dates, and WL seems nice. I wonder how the bus system works out from WL. AKL has some availability, but it's only CL and it's really expensive, even with the 30% off. WL is just much cheaper, and we could stay CL for less than a regular room at the Poly (which we have booked, but only for 4 of our nights, because it is FULL the other night). So we don't know what to do!!! Should we splurge and stay CL at AKL or save a little and stay at WL CL? Or keep our reservation at the Poly (we've never been there) but then have to switch resorts? Oh it is a difficult decision.

The Sunrise Safari is for AKL guests only, and I'm pretty sure it is specifically for CL guests. That is the main reason we chose it over the late-night safari (can't remember what that's called). They do the Wanyama Safari and then a night-vision one, and I'm pretty sure those are for any guests of AKL, while Sunrise Safari is CL guests only. We figured we might never stay CL again, so better to do it while we could.

Those lions were so cool. We could hear them roaring all the way at AKL that morning, and then to get to see them moving around and doing stuff was just even better. Now we know why all the roaring. The male lion was so frisky. He actually reminded me a little of my bichon, Milton. :p

So maybe we just missed the boat on the Yak & Yeti craze! That's good to hear that you feel it has gone down hill a bit, so we know we are just being difficult. The more I think about it, the more I do think we'll go back. It was just so nice having the air conditioned break and all that iced tea, and there aren't really a lot of table service options in AK, nor are there many counter service that appeal to us. I will have to try the salmon next time I think.

It makes me so happy that you are reading along and enjoying! :goodvibes Dessert and drinks to come...working on weekend chores :laundy: and we are about to meet a new potential dogsitter who can stay with our dogs when we leave for our coming DL trip!

Really enjoying your reviews!
I'll be staying at AKL for the first time next spring - I'm vegetarian also (traveling with two vegans), so I am very interested to see what other meals you and your DP recommend!

Great reviews so far. I remember your DL dining review and enjoyed it very much.

I am loving your reviews! I would be ordering similar dishes (although I do eat chicken also), so it has been very helpful (and drool inducing). It also brings back magical memories of my own CL stay at AKL. I remember how much I enjoyed sampling the various appetizers and soups...I was pleasantly surprised to find that a lot of the offerings were meatless. It has been too long, I need to get back there! Thanks for the inspiration!

By the way, I also loved your DL dining reviews. I wish Scottie would beam me over to Rancho del Zocalo right now!

I hear the Boma buffet is great for vegetarian and vegan diners. While we were there, I asked an enthusiastic CM which meal at Boma is the best. She really thought it over and recommended breakfast. So I'd say you should definitely try Boma for breakfast, and I would highly recommend Sanaa for dinner! It seems like we ended up eating an awful lot of seafood (in particular shrimp) this trip, but our WDW 2012 review has several vegetarian options that I recall.

Great reviews so far. I remember your DL dining review and enjoyed it very much.

Thanks! I'm so glad you liked the DL review, too. We'll be back to DL soon and I hope to write a dining review when we get home!

Since we only stayed 3 nights CL and on arrival night didn't get there until after midnight, we didn't have too many opportunities to explore the hot hors d'ouvres in the lounge. The night we did eat there (review coming up momentarily) was awesome. One word: tibs! I swear I ate so many of these I made up for the fact that we only spent the one night eating in the lounge. :rotfl2:

Speaking of Scottie, we just got back from having dinner at a local seafood restaurant. While we were there, the manager came over to the table next to us and killed a bug right on the table. I swear I was thinking: this would never happen at Disney! :sad2:

After our meal at Yak & Yeti, we took in a couple more attractions and then snagged an excellent shaded spot to watch the Jammin' Jungle Parade:

Love this blue elephant float!

Minnie's car is probably my favorite float in the parade.

After our day at AK, we returned to our hotel in time to hang out on our balcony watching giraffes and then make it down to the lounge in time for the evening snacks and cocktails.

They had the same selection of wine and cordials as the night prior.

This evening, since it was a little earlier, we both decided to indulge in some of the featured African wines.

I selected chardonnay:

This modest little pour gives you no idea of how much chardonnay I actually ended up drinking, but I started out with the best intentions. ::yes::

They had two reds to choose from, a merlot and a shiraz. DP chose the shiraz:

Another deceiving modest pour! But you can see what we've got going on all over the table. I will admit we were complete and utter gluttons!

Here are the hot items for the night:

Tibs in brik and lamb tandoori

Since we don't eat meat, I can't comment on the lamb, but I will say that people in the lounge were all over it. As for the tibs, the only thing odd about these was the name.

I loved the tibs. :lovestruc

Here was my attempt to show you the inside of a tib:

And here is one sweet little treasure on a plate:

It's too bad the photo is so dark. Tibs in brik is basically a chopped mushroom filling inside of phyllo dough, deep fried. I think they say there is some kind of cheese in there, but I didn't really notice anything that seemed like my idea of cheese. There was a nice spiciness to these, and lots of yummy, oil saturated goodness. These have the kind of oiliness that makes you go  not the kind of oiliness that makes you go . At least not right away, or when consumed in the proper portion.

We also had some crudité:

I believe that was a sourdough crostini on the side. I particularly liked the presentation of the whole baby carrots, and the grape tomatoes tasted fresh and very tomato-y.

We also tasted a variety of the imported cheese:

At this point, I can't even remember which was my favorite or why...what I do recall was wishing they had a soft-ripened cheese, but when I have full access to unlimited cheese, I tend not to be too picky about the selection.

Here is how the cheese looked before we got to it:

In addition to the crostini, they had some crackers to accompany the cheese. I believe maybe they had water crackers? I can't remember.

We rarely drink alcohol, so by now the chardonnay had gone to my head and I thought it would be a good idea to eat more cheese:

So I did! Now DP likes cheese, but not at all like I like cheese, so most of what you see pictured was eaten by yours truly. DP hardly had a bite. Oh dear. :bitelip:

Then I ate more of these:

About 10 or so more...

There was also a nice selection of hummus:

The sun-dried tomato hummus

And white bean hummus:

There was a third, black olive hummus, which was everyone's favorite apparently. It was gone pretty early on, and they never brought out any more. :(

Thanks to DP's quick arm (and lack of cheese and mushroom distraction), we managed to sample all three:

I don't remember what that thin crispy type of bread was, but it was good dipped in the hummus. I think it might be the same thing you can get at Sanaa when you choose bread service.

By this time, we were feeling awfully full. Remember, I had eaten at least a total of 10 tibs (DP restrained herself to 3 or 4) and two giant helpings of solid cheese. In spite of being pretty stuffed, I was also feeling pretty good...if there are two things to note about me it is this:
1)Cheese and mushrooms are my two proclaimed favorite foods
2)I love a good value or bargain, and the wine was free

We headed up to our room feeling giddy and satisfied...with the last pour of wine in our paper cups. :cloud9:

Oh my did the savannah seem fine tonight.

Coming up next, bare with me as I indulge myself and post some of the animal pics we took from our savannah view balcony and also desserts from the lounge.

Hi
Great reviews!! I don't eat any meat, so I'm really enjoying reading your reviews.
Thanks for sharing!!

That looks so yummy. I can't wait to see the animal pictures!

It was yummy! Sorry for the delay...animal pictures coming up shortly!

Hi

Thanks for sharing!!

I remember you from a former post. It's nice to have you back. :flower3: Glad there are vegetarian and vegetable lovers out there enjoying the non-meat photos!

You are getting me so excited about my youngest daughter's graduation trip slated for 2017. I know it seems so far away but it will be here closer than it sounds :) We are doing AKL (another 12-day excursion) and we now are considering Concierge. Especially after reading your dining report so far :goodvibes I am giddy that you are posting some animal pics. Can't wait to read on!! Wonderful posts!! When are you headed to DLR? We go about once a week :rotfl: but we live very close. :beach:

Sorry for the delay everyone. We had a good weekend but now it is over.

Here is the post you've all been waiting for...ok maybe not all of you, but a couple of you. This is a summary of animals we saw at various times in the past two days from our perfect savannah view room at AKL. We were on the 4th floor, which was a good distance to be above any trees or obstructive foliage. There were times we felt SO CLOSE to the animals.

These are a couple of our favorites, red river hogs:

We saw these many times our first day. We later discussed it with our guide for the Sunrise Safari, and we found that they don't often release the red river hogs when other animals are out, because they don't necessarily get along with others. I think he said they "annoy" the other animals. We thought they were just about the cutest thing, especially when they were out with the guinea fowl. Everybody was running every which way!

Here is a photo without any zoom at all, to give you a sense of just how close these pigs were:

Some of you might be thinking "Pigs? Really? They were excited about pigs?" but we were! We love all animals, and while we would have been excited to see regular pigs, these were red river hogs.

Then we spotted this guy off in the distance:

A giraffe! This is a pretty close zoom shot...we were prepared for this to be it, because we'd read so many criticisms from people who paid for an animal view room and hardly saw more than a bird. We were still happy...total tally one giraffe and two pigs.

And then the flood gates seemed to open...over the course of the next day and half, here is a selection of what we saw:

I'm fairly sure this is a roan antelope.

Several antelope, some "tommies" and a few giraffes!

The giraffes kept doing this funny thing where they'd spread apart their front legs in order to get down low enough to feed off of something on the ground:

It was silly and generated lots of "oohs" and "ahs" from us as we watched.

An ostrich!

Guinea fowl; these guys were awesome. They were very active most of the time, they'd run around in a little flock...or gaggle...I don't know, and they'd make little noises, and the feathers alongside their bodies would wiggle and jiggle like they had saddle bags. It cracked us up. None of the other animals seemed to love the guinea fowl, but we sure did! This is a picture of them rooting through some poo...I guess they have quite a taste for it. :rolleyes2

A giraffe doing what giraffes do...

Feeding time! You can spot some zebras back there. They tended to hang out more in the back of the action most of the time.

A whole bunch of them!

Another antelope

These birds were there perched like this pretty much the entire time, but in the mornings they'd jump down and walk around a bit. I think they were pelicans. We saw several different species of bird, including cranes, storks, and a vulture. We didn't get pictures of most, but if you love exotic birds, you'll love this view.

One of the best things about the Arusha savannah view was that we were able to watch the animals in a somewhat natural environment exhibiting normal animal behaviors. It was nothing short of miraculous. At one point, the giraffes all started loping around the savannah, while the guinea fowl chased them around making their warbling bird sounds. It literally took my breath away, and I wasn't even the one who really wanted to stay at AKL...

We got countless more photos, but I won't bore you with them here, since this is a dining review. :scratchin You get the point, though. If you are staying at AKL and can splurge on an animal view room, do it!

Ok back to the food...all that animal viewing made us hungry for dessert. Personally, I was a little too wiped out from my overindulgence in chardonnay, so I forced DP to go down to the lounge to grab some desserts for us:

She came back with a small plate for us to share, as I'd warned her I was not about to have a repeat of the night before!

Yummy yummy! Tonight they had chocolate covered strawberries. These were awesome. There was also a chocolate cup with peanut butter mousse in it, and the same selection of cookies as the night before. I decided to try an oatmeal raisin. This was good, but it was just a cookie. Nothing like those white chocolate macadamia nut cookies from the day before. :worried:

We enjoyed our small selection of desserts. She mentioned they had more than what she brought back..I think brownie bites again, rice krispy treats, and maybe the banana trifle again? Or the panna cotta? Either way, there was more to go around than what we ate.

Earlier in the day, when I was hungry and it seemed like a good idea, I'd also stopped in the quick service store to purchase this:

A chocolate cupcake with vanilla icing and zebra white chocolate decoration

We couldn't very well let that go to waste:

So we didn't! This is an inside shot. There was a little bit of filling, but it still didn't really help. This was prettier than it was good; it was just kind of dry and not as good as a chocolate cupcake that you'd make from a cakemix at home. Maybe ours was old.

It didn't matter that we ate the cupcake out of obligation and that it wasn't that good. We had a spectacular evening, watching all the animals frolic, savoring all those yummy treats and bites from the CL...this is exactly what vacation is supposed to be!

Coming up next, our last breakfast in the lounge and then it's on to Epcot, Beach Club and Cantina de San Angel!

2017 sounds far away but it will be here before you know it! I'd say if you can stay CL at AKL, do it!!! For us, we knew we wanted to splurge for an animal view room, and then the CL standard room only only cost about $75 more per night. Since it was just 3 nights, it made sense to just spend the extra money to see what CL is all about...and now we're hooked. Ok we're hooked, but our budget is in denial. We may not ever stay CL again, or we might not be able to justify the cost, but at AKL, it really is a good value.

We will be in DL the first week of September. Our premier passes expire in August, so it will be our first time back in a while with just a park hopper. We'll see if we make it through the trip without upgrading to APs...:rolleyes1

We haven't yet seen Princess Fantasy Faire, so we are really looking forward to that...and of course looking forward to all the food!

Loving your reviews!
Wonderful photos of AKL and all the animals. The lounge food looks delicious :thumbsup2
Oh and is it just me or does the inside of your cupcake look like Kermit The Frog with a sun tan ;)

I was doing all this debating between Poly and AKL for our next trip. Then people were saying I should look into WL (because we have small kids). So I start researching WL and think maybe it would be nice to be closer to MK...

And then you go and post the animal pictures. :lmao: We have stayed savanna view room at AKL twice, and it is just amazing.

At least I have two years to decide. (And save money :rotfl:)

Cheese and hummus- two of my favorite things!

Thanks for the animal shots, especially the red river hogs! We searched and searched for them when we were there in January, but we never found them. This is my first time seeing them.
