We chose a St. John excursion rather than stay at St. Thomas -- and we LOVED it. It is a truly beautiful and dreamy island. It is a National Park. The ferry ride over was fun because they showed us a lot of landmarks and pointed out all the celebrity houses on the cliffs (like Nelson Mandela and Michael Jordan).
The island tour was very informative and stopped at a lot of both historic sites and photo op sites. We saw a sugar plantation, wild mongoose, wild pigs, donkeys, resorts, beaches and shops. You can see the British Virgin Islands from there and the spot where Sir Francis Drake landed.
They took us to the highest point in the Virgin Islands for an overlook. What a view!
After the tour, they brought us back to the docks and we went into the shops and visitor's center/museum. They tell you when you have to be back on the ferry.
It was a great experience and would do it again. Next time, we will do the beach excursion. We thought it was worth it.
We got back by 12:30 and discovered that we probably could have easily booked the afternoon Atlantis Submarine excursion. We had lunch on the ship and then went back into St. Thomas. You have plenty of time to go into St. Thomas and visit the shops, etc.
