Is something wrong with my new D40/Lens?

Well I have had my new Nikon D40 w/18-135mm lens combo for about two weeks and I have used it on about 6 different occasions. Several times now I have found myself having to twist the lens back and forth slightly because I have received a Lens not Seated message on the screen and it wouldn’t take pics till I messed with it. Is this common or something I should be worried about? I am 99.99% sure I attached the lens correctly (even tried removing it and reattaching just to make sure) but still get the same message once and a while.

I have the same system and I haven't received that message. It just happens without having recently changed from one lens to a different lens? (I'm pretty sure you just have the one lens). I'd be concerned that the connection points between the lens and the camera body are malfunctioning.

This does not sound normal. As long as you are installing the lens correctly in the first place- rotating it until it locks in place with a mechanical click- I would return/exchange it or send it to Nikon Service. I have had several DSLR's for the past two years and have seen the FF error message maybe twice- and that was in the same day with the same camera/lens combo.

i have same camera/lens, and it happens to me occassionaly as well. let me know what you find out

I do only have the one lens that I bought as a kit purchase from B&H. I shot them an email tonight to see what they have to say. I already filled out the warranty card for the lens (but didnt mail it) and may have over 200 photos on the camera so they may not like me as this breaks two of their return rules, make that three as it is more then the couple of days since delivery before I am reporting an issue. I guess time will tell!

Thanks for the tip! I will get in touch with them as soon as I hear back from B&H. I sure hope if I had to send it to Nikon they wouldnt send a refurb item if it needed replacement. *fingers crossed* But I will worry about that as I see what needs to go on.

Update: Spoke to B&H and they said they won’t do anything... I would have to send it to Nikon. I was hoping from better from them but oh well!
So I called Nikon and they recommended trying to clean the contacts with a q-tip and alcohol so I gave that a try. I will see how it goes for the next few times I try to use the camera. If I still have an issue, I will have to send it to Nikon for a service check.

That stinks! You spend $650 on something, you expect it to work the way it should work. :sad2:

My thinking too! I guess I should have just waited for Amazon to get it back in stock and then I would have had no issue with returning/exchanging a defective item within 30 days (at least never had an issue with that in the past with Amazon)!

Hopefully the suggestion from the Nikon rep will work wonders and I can move on. If not, I have faith Nikon can take care of my needs.
