Gotta love the clear as mud TSA website...

Can't figure out if solid deoderant is considered a "gel" or a solid:

From the site:

Deodorants made of gel or aerosol Yes -3 oz. or smaller container

AND

You are permitted to bring solid cosmetics and personal hygiene items as such lipstick, lip balm and similar solids.

Any personal experience or knowledge?

Thanks.

You expect anything less from the government? :rolleyes1:

Yeesh!! Well, deodorant is a personal hygiene item. To me, a "gel" would be something that is solid enough to hold its shape but you could see something inside it to some degree.

Then again, this could be one of those things that depends on the TSA agent -- one agent in one airport says it's a solid, another agent in another airport says it's a gel.

You can see through some deodorant. :confused3

I have travelled with a solid antiperspirant in my carry-on and did not place it in my baggie. You want to make sure that the container specifically says that it is a SOLID. Then you are likely to not have a problem with it or at least to be able to conveince the TSA agent that it is a Solid. I was never questioned about mine.

Best of luck -- Suzanne

Are you not checking any bags? (I can relate, when I traveled a lot on business I was in a hurry and never checked my bag. On vacation, I usually check the bag.)
But if you are checking, why not just put it in the checked bag?:confused3

It's business - just 2 nights - not Disney - and I'm traveling with 3 male colleagues who won't check bags. Therefore, it's carry on for me this time.

Thanks everyone.

My solid deodorant had magical properties this weekend. When I left Little Rock, it was a solid. When I flew back from Kansas City, it was a gel.

Go figure... :confused3

I did convince the TSA agent in Kansas City that since the deodorant said "Solid, 2.7 oz." that it was in fact solid, but I also offered to run it through again in my magical plastic baggie if that would appease him. He let me go on without running it through again... and I didn't even get the optional body cavity search for questioning the almighty.

So, my advice is, if it will fit in your one quart baggie go ahead and put it in there. If it won't fit, just put it in your bag and hope that the agent understands the concept of a solid.

As long as it's the gel kind that clicks up and goes on wet and slimy, it should be ok. Most others are invisible solid, and technically it's a solid. Perhaps bring a travel size one JUST in case they make you take it out, that way you didn't waste a full size one!

I bought a travel size deoderant to have in my carry-on, and packed my regular size in my checked...want to be sure I can freshen up upon arrival!!

Now just hoping I can carry-on wet wipes!

FYI - the answer to this question (for this particular trip) was...

From Indianapolis to Atlanta:
TSA ignored my solid deoderant, i.e., it was okay because it was a "solid" as indicated on the package

From Atlanta to Indianapolis:
TSA made me discard my solid deoderant = "it is a gel"

:confused3
