Is Poly just a love/hate thing?

I have never stayed at the Poly but it is my dream destination--restaurants, bars, foliage, tropical feel, music, even the smell--the atmosphere to me is second to none among the other resorts at Disney (and after our trip this year to BLT we will have stayed at almost every Disney hotel at least once--only other one is CBR). We visit the Poly on every trip to go to Kona and have a relaxing fireworks viewing on the beach.

Why have I never stayed there? The PRICE! Holy moly--almost $500/night??? I'm not saying anything about the people who can afford that (for all I know they've been saving up for years for it), but I cannot! We tend to rent points and stay at DVC resorts to get a deluxe experience for somewhat cheaper, but have splurged on the other deluxes in the past. But still not even GF was as expensive as the Poly. All this is to say---if I found a room at the Poly for $212/night I would take it now, if only just to experience the hotel. If you decide you don't like it, well at least you didn't spend twice that on the room.

Hope you enjoy it--I'll be living vicariously through you! :)

We went to Poly for our first trip. We had 4 kids and 2 adults (one child was 2) in standard room. While the amenities were nice, and the hotel itself was upscale, I didnt care much for it. There wasnt anything I particularly disliked..I just kept waiting for the big 'it' and 'it' never came.
After we stayed at POR and were completely dissatisfied, we have settled in with the Values. We love POP. Music wasnt bad, either. I think a lot of our amusement with the Poly trip was the fact that it was our first trip.

I thought the latest rumors about Poly DVC were Studios in the Longhouses and 3BD Grand Villas in the new beach buildings--no 1BD or 2BD villas.

Yes, that's what I've heard as well...no 1BR and 2BR villas. Except I think the grand villa bungalows will be 2BR instead of 3BR...but likely will cost a ton of points.

Don't believe it. Why in the world would a highly anticipated DVC not include all room categories? They can reconfigure existing rooms like they did at Jambo.

According to Tikiman's site, king rooms are available in Fiji, Rarotonga and Samoa. I didn't see any mention if they are or are not available in Tuvalu, so I'm guessing no, but not sure. In Samoa, he notes that king rooms are available every other room on the first and third floors, facing the east pool, so that's quite a few rooms in that building. Maybe that's why I got my requests for king room, Samoa, third floor? The room was great, so large with only the king bed (well there was a day bed too, but with only me and DH we didn't use that as a bed). But you're right, a request is just a request, no guarantee.

Yes. King bed rooms are only in Samoa, Rarotonga and Fiji.

Poly does have standard king rooms. My H and I were in one in November in Samoa. The CM insisted there was no such thing when I called to book my reservation but I knew from Tikiman that wasn't true so I asked her to put it in my requests even though she didn't want to. We got all my requests, Samoa, king bed, third floor with balcony. I LOVED our stay at Poly! Wouldn't have changed a thing!:)

You will find that calling Disney’s Polynesian phone number will get you an offsite Disney call center. They make you believe you are calling the resort but you are not. The problem is they are often not given current information about the resort or what construction will be going on.
My longhouse pages all have a link to the floor plans that will show you every room and configuration including which ones are king beds.

It's supposed to be the 2 buildings converted into all studios...and some connecting ones which we can't get anywhere else. I am all for it because I can get 2 studios instead of a 2BR and put DDs in one and DH and I in the other and this way can maybe afford (point wise) to stay at Poly.

Those working on the project told me it would only be studios so believe it or not, they would know.

The test rooms that they have already and the plans seem to match that information. Here is a close up of the permits that show the rooms in Rapa Nui.

Any idea if the studios will sleep 5 like the GFV?

I would think so, especially since the Polynesian rooms are larger from what I am told.

I have stayed at the Poly and at the YC, of the two I prefer the YC, however, if I had never stayed at the Poly and could stay there for the price OP has, I'd stay there. Some people absolutely love the Poly, and I expected to be one of those, however, I was just so/so about it, so until you try it out you just don't know how you'll feel about it, IMO.

I am in the same boat OP! At this point I have decided on the Poly, despite all the construction, because the theme is much more interesting to me and being so close to MK is amazing! I considered BC but I live in New England and I want to feel like I'm not at home! I want to feel like I'm on vacation!

I am still having a few doubts after looking at the old pool construction photos that Tikiman posted on facebook, but over all the theme and the proximity for MK made my decision!

Tikiman-Do you think the construction will be as intensive as the photos you posted?

The plan to change the whole area around the pool from the patio outside Captain Cook's all the way to the beach sounds like the same area affected when they did the pool in 2000 so I would expect that whole area to be closed off. Also trucks and heavy equipment will have to have access to that area so it sounded to me like it would be very much like those photos. I guess we will not know for sure until it happens.

I've tried to talk myself into the Poly, but I just can't, not at those prices. Last Feb I spent a lot of time just walking around the Poly and trying to convince myself it was special. Sacrilege, but I actually think the Royal Pacific Resort at Universal does the Poly theme 100 times better. I don't find the Poly attractive at all. So, yes, I think it either appeals to you or it doesn't.

We stayed at the Poly for 2 nights when we got married there in September. It was pure luxury, but the beds were rock hard and uncomfy. There was construction going on beside us on sunset pointe but it didn't bother us.
But I agree that it's not worth the price they charge per night, at least give us breakfast for what we are paying! :)

It's purely a matter of preference. I like all the resorts we've ever stayed at in WDW but the Poly is my favorite. It's absolutely beautiful at night with the torches along the walkways lit up. Very romantic ;)

We haven't stayed at BC/YC yet but on our anniversary last year we stayed at BWI and while I do love the location I found myself wishing we were at Poly.

We have not been there but we were really wanting to go there for our vacation in May. I knew ahead of time that the price would be high. I saved for three years to go there. While doing reseach on these boards I discovered there plans for the consrtuction. I was so dissapointed. At one point I was even willing to still book if the pool would be down but then to hear about everything else was just too much!!! I like you wondered why they will still continue to chargr that much and not compensate their guests. Through this boards I found out the cold hard truth. It is all about location, location, location. People will stay and pay anything just for the convience of being close. Some of them also here for conventions. So there you have it. Disney has us all by the ying yang because people will pay that money regardless. Point in fact 3 days into the spring sale the only rooms avaliable are club level rooms at the Poly. If we are lucky to go on another Florida vacation I would like to check into doing a split stay. One at a Disney resort and one at Universal's Hawaiian Resort. It looks beautiful, has a Luau, has the convience of getting you to Universal parks, and is half the cost.

The Poly is my favorite WDW resort, that saying I would not stay there during construction. A big part of the Poly's charm is the beautiful landscaping, pool area, GCH and beaches. I would wait until the construction is done and then visit at that time.

We really liked our YC stay as walking to EPCOT was wonderful, easy boat ride to DS and watching the high Illuminations fireworks from our patio was awesome.

OP, we don't hate the Poly but we dislike it intensely. It's personal though it just does not appeal to us. We gave it 2 tries. Maybe in the future we'll try again since the room decor has been lightened up.

OP, I love the Poly.

My dh now loves it and won't stay anywhere else! I tried to get him to do a split stay at the BC but he said no.

I can tell you I did not like the grand Floridian but if I was going this summer I would choose to stay there over the poly on,y because of the pool issue. I felt under dressed at the GF, still do!

And I didn't like the WL either. It was ok but I had no view of the castle on my walk to the beach or catching glimpses of the monorail.
