I'm renting again instead of buying - and I have mixed feelings about it. I really want to buy because I see myself using my points for the long run. So - in that sense - it does make more sense for me to buy. It will cost me more to rent if I keep using that option as long as I expect to.
In the short term, however, I had to make a choice. I was unexpectedly presented the option of taking a big trip elsewhere next year - with some discounts due to staying with family part of time. That trip (Australia) is still going to cost me a bunch of money - and that's eating into the money I would have used to purchase
DVC.
Also, my significant other is not as into Disney as I am and he struggles to plan vacations far in advance. I can rent in a relatively short time frame - as I not totally picky about where I will stay. Sure - I'm not getting into BLT for my next trip like I wanted, but I also knew I couldn't commit to going any earlier to be able to make a reservation 11 months out. It's a compromise, yep. But right now, even if I owned, I couldn't book far enough out to take full advantage of owning.
So - I am coming to terms with I need more flexibility in my travel plans than what makes sense to get the MOST out of owning DVC - at least at this point in my life. I can't make the advanced commitment, I have other places I want to go, and it's a luxury purchase for me. Maybe 3-5 years from now, I'll be rethinking that again - but for right now - renting works for me.
