Is Mission Space too "barfy"?

Is Mission Space too "barfy" for us to ride? lol! :confused3 We are not easily nauseated, but we've never ridden anything like MS - I've read so much about it that I'm wondering now. I have read it several books that it is the single ride most likely to cause you to lose your cookies - argh! I've also read that it is best to ride it in the morning before it gets crowded (adding to the nausea factor for me).

Here are hints I read:

don't drink milk or eat tomatoes (or any big meal) before riding
keep stomach totally empty
eat a banana an hr. prior to riding
suck on hard candy while riding
don't use controls, but stare at screens

This is the ride my son is really wanting to ride, so I'd like to be prepared for what to expect. What 'cha think?

I think it just varies person to person. We have ridden several times and no one in my family has ever barfed or come close to it. I have never seen anyone get sick on the ride or right after but Im sure that some people do.

Take a dramamine an hour before you ride. Take your dramamine with your banana.

Keep your head back and eyes on the screen. DO NOT look to make sure your son is okay. DO NOT close your eyes if you feel overwhelmed. That will make it worse.

I had no ill effects after riding, but my wife was a bit dizzy. It was nothing incapacitating, but it wasn't pleasant.

I really think the hype is a bit much. BUT - the only way to know how it'll effect you is if YOU go on! :teeth:

It's a weird ride.
I did it once when it first opened and I think I'm done.
Not because it made me sick.
It was interesting but just didn't excite me at all.
There's a feeling of pressure pushing you back and the simulator makes it feel like you're moving.

You know that ride at amusement parks where you spin around so fast that they can drop the floor beneath you but you stay pressed against the wall?
It a high-tech and nicer version of that, imho.
So if that didn't bother you then you're all set.

Same here. None of us has been ill or seen anyone who was ill. But why not take a dose of Low Drowsy Dramamine (or another anti-nausea med) if you're worried about it? That's what I did the first time I rode (since we were working in the parks that day and couldn't afford to be sick) and I had no unwelcome effects.

We rode during the passholder preview. Never again! We had to go back to the hotel after riding. Mind you, we are not wimps. We ride all the rides at Disney and all roller coasters at other theme parks. Everyone staggered off that ride looking a little green.

I dont know if they "toned it down" after that, but I am not trying it again.

This is going to be a mixed review answer. I personally love the ride but I am also a huge space buff. Here is the part of the answer where it is mixed. We went with my parents, my DW, DS, and DD. All the guys (ages range between 60-9) really enjoyed the ride. All of the women (ranging between 58-7) couldn't handle it. It made them either sick to their stomach or dizzy for a couple of hours. My DD has said that she wants to give it another try on the upcoming trip in June. Now, my DW, DS and I can handle any rollercoaster that we can get too but for some reason this ride does her in.

We always hit this ride first thing in the morning. What we have done in the past was to go to TT and get a FP, then ride Mission Space, relax a little by doing the Universe of Energy and by the time we are finished with that, it is time to ride TT. Usually, we have that whole side done in less than 2 hours. (It would take longer if Wonders of Life was open. I love that place.)

Don't know if that helps or not but there is the info. :confused3

They did tone it down after that, for the exact reason you mention, wdwfan1. Green is not good when it's on the faces of your guests. :crazy2:

And Snacky....great minds think alike! We must have posted at the same time.

I don't want the Dramamine (sp?) to make my son sleepy - does the lower drowsiness one still make you sleepy?

It still makes you a little drowsy...if you're really set on giving it to your kid, you might want to try it before you go and see how he reacts. Most kids don't mind the spinning. I'd be more concerned that you're going to toss your cookies, it's barfy alright.

I didn't actually get sick but was extremely dizzy and disoriented after riding Mission Space. It's odd I can ride any roller coaster that you put in front of me but Mission Space, Star Tours, and Body Wars all make me really dizzy!

I was sicker than a dog after I rode Mission Space and I can usually do any ride (love to go on TOT 2 or 3times in a row!) Nothing every bothered me like that one did. I guess I could never be an astronaut!

It's nice to see people approaching this thread realistically instead of the way they used to go of "oh it's fine" just because it didnt' affect the person posting.

I love the attraction. It is GREAT in my opinion. However, I took my brother in law on it in Dec. and he came off not feeling too well. He went to the grass and threw up (think about that the next time you lay on the beautiful green grass around that area).

The worst part is, he threw up and never felt right the rest of the day and it sort of ruined the rest of the day.

I would say be careful of when you do this if you decide to. IF by chance it affects the person badly, it can cause a "wierd" feeling in them all day. It's not like a ride that just scares you and you say "never again". It's a ride that can make you or someone actually "FEEL" wierd.

I have myself a few times gotten a little dizzy, only later to realize I wasn't in my proper "form", in terms of the way I was sitting.

The best thing I cay say is.........if you ride, to avoid getting scared or dizzy or nauseous is to try to relax. If you are tense it makes it worse. Get in there, take a few deep breaths and just relax.

It is very true though.........if you look to the side (to check on your child, spouse, etc) you will feel it in a BAD way. If you lean forward you'll get dizzy. Leave your head back and sit still and relax. They tell you the same things I have when you enter the ride.

Overall I'd say do this ride late in the day if possible if you've never done it before.

I love it but I've learned the hard way that everyone is different, and it can ruin a day at the park.

suck on hard candy while riding??

I cant imagine that being a good idea. Pulling G's and moving on a fast ride with hard candy in your mouth?

I would have to agree with that. If it was just a dizzying ride like an airplane or something it may be different but, with so much g-force pushing towards the back of the seat, that candy is going to want to go straight back and that would be a big choking risk.

I'm a 40 year old Mother of three kids. I say if I can do it you can too!! :thumbsup2 I really enjoyed the ride and will do it again on my next trip. The worst is just a bit of pressure on you as you lean back, like on other simulator rides like was previously posted by others. Ride and ENJOY!

I totally agree. No one else in my family would ride it. I wound up riding with 3 other "single riders" whose family wouldn't ride with them either. Once was enough for me. It didn't physically make me sick, it just messed with my head in that feeling that you're moving, but you're really not ?!? :faint:

My dh tried this one with our older son. Son was fine, but dh, who had NEVER to my knowledge or his had any motion sickness, was sick as a dog for HOURS afterward. It really sort of messed up the rest of the day for us. He didn't want to do anything, but, being a man, didn't really mention HOW bad he felt.............just that the ride had made him nauseous. So, I'm trying to get the family moving on, and he got mad and snapped at me that he was SICK! Well, gosh, I didn't know he meant he was that sick, and I didn't feel like I needed snapping at, so I snapped back. So we were one of those couples fighting at the Happiest Place on Earth that others just can't understand. It was no fun.

So, for us, yes, it's too barfy.

I was really glad I didn't go on it, as I get motion sickness all the time.

DH won't do it again, so DS has decided to do it solo this next trip.

The Low Drowsy Dramamine is a huge improvement over the 'regular' version. My son takes it when riding in a car for any distance and he's fine with it (your milage may vary).

I have to agree with not sucking on candy. Not only are you in trouble if you have food in your mouth and you feel sick, but you ARE spinning at high speed even if you don't feel it. That doesn't seem like the ideal time to have something in your mouth.

Cleo, I read another thread a few months ago by a MS CM who was there at the beginning, and he was adamant that they have not changed the ride since it previewed.

On another note, we are DLR vets making a first trip to WDW in May and I am planning to give MS a chance. I am fine on any ride, except for motion simulators like Star Tours. I usually do fine on spinning rides. I am expecting to get sick on MS, but will probably ride it the PM to minimize impact on day if I do get sick.
