Is Mickey a Captain or a Jedi? Both! - May '15 Land & Sea ~ Updated 6/14: Trip Report Started!

Oh, cool, did you write a TR on that one? Can't wait to get on Mickey's boat! :cool1:

I did not write a TR. I actually had no idea the DIS world even existed back then! We went on that trip with NO planning whatsoever! Bob just booked a cruise and went to AAA and booked the land part. We had the dining plan and didn't even make ADRs :faint: Concierge made them all for us the day we arrived! I can not believe what I did not know!

Hi! I actually was following along on your Hawaii trip as we head there end of March (not Aulani, but Oahu & Big Island) and hopped over here and noticed you will be in Disney the same time as me! I'm taking my daughter for her 13th birthday- a mom & me trip.. from May 21st-May 25th! :thumbsup2

Maybe we'll see you there! :)

Also, you will LOVE the boats. We have done the Magic (2007), The Dream (in 2012) and Fantasy last year (2014). It's a wonderful place for kids....

Looking forward to following along.

I'm here!! :goodvibes

Sounds like an amazing plan!! Hope your BCV waitlist comes through, especially since you have to move in between anyway. Hopefully I'll be able to bring home some insight for you! I've had so much fun reading a gazillion cruise TR's getting prepared, but there just is NOT as much planning to do! I'm driving myself crazy trying to plan out more! Lol

Haha, that's kinda crazy. :rotfl2: I guess you are making up for that now! :thumbsup2

:welcome: Oh, cool - say hi if you see us! We'll be the ones being led around by a 2-year-old, probably towards characters. :goodvibes Hope your daughter has a very magical birthday! pixiedust: Oh, and enjoy Hawaii! :thumbsup2

Also, you will LOVE the boats. We have done the Magic (2007), The Dream (in 2012) and Fantasy last year (2014). It's a wonderful place for kids....

We are super excited to board the Dream. Despite having only gone on 2, I LOVE cruises and have been dying to get on one for some time - and Dug is pumped too, as he surprised himself by loving our RC cruise back in 2008. If you have any particular tips or insights into the Dream (or DCL in general), please chime in!

I'm here!! :goodvibes
Hi! I can't believe how soon your cruise is...I am excited to see how you like it! :hyper:

Yeah, we originally had two waitlists and one came through (BWV for the first block of nights), so I'm not sure if we'll luck out and get both. We actually could have had BWV for all 4 of the last nights too, but really wanted to go to StormAlong Bay at least once, so figured the last night only would be worth switching for, as SWW would be behind us and we could spend more time enjoying the resort. It would be better if we could get all 4 nights there, though - just to avoid the move and have more opportunities to enjoy SAB. We'll see.

I hope you can bring a lot of insight home for us! :thumbsup2 It seems like there are not a lot of cruise TRs to chose from (vs. WDW ones). I've read them sparingly, usually just ones for our cruise or with toddlers (or both). I still feel like I need to do more planning, but mostly "rope drop" types of things - what to do first, etc. How did your online check-in go? Did you reserve Palo and such at that time? Any tips?

Where to even start?! (My apologies for the lack of relevant photos - I will make up for it with smileys and inserting random recent pics of Izzy that have nothing to do with the words I'm writing! :lmao: ) Like this:

I guess a bit of background is good. Dug and I have been dreaming of doing a Disney Cruise with a little WDW for a long time. I cruised once, way back when, and loved it (Grand Princess) :lovestruc. In 2008, I convinced Dug to try a cruise and we took the Voyageur of the Seas (Royal Caribbean) out of Galveston, TX for a week in the Caribbean. We absolutely loved everything about it. :cloud9: I know people talk about the great service on DCL and I'm sure it is, but we had top notch service on that RC cruise - it set a high bar for us that probably only DCL could live up to. We've been wanting to go on another cruise ever since. But our WDW love was ignited in 2009 and that became our main vacation destination for the immediate future - and was generally cheaper than cruising. Put these two things together and we started pondering a Disney Cruise.

However, a Disney Cruise is not a cheap trip and we hesitated and procrastinated on booking one. Finally, we were thinking we'd book one for late 2014. And then...we got $70 tickets to Hawaii for November 2014 (see other TR, haha) and that wiped out any cruise thoughts we had for 2014. We started to look towards 2015, when we hoped our vacation fund would recover from 2014's madness.

In June 2014, we finally pulled the trigger and booked the cruise for May 2015. We knew that booking early on would likely get us a lower rate than if we waited, so we went for it, despite not feeling certain of our plans (we had a long time where we could cancel for free). I think we chose May because it would give our budget some time to build back up, the rates were pretty good, my Annual Pass would still be valid, Izzy would still be free at WDW, and it would likely be Star Wars Weekends at WDW - which Dug had been dreaming of attending again (we did in 2010). We knew we wanted to do a 4-night cruise, as 3 just wouldn't be long enough (and I'm not sure 4 will be, but more than that is $$$). We liked that this cruise was Monday-Friday, as that allowed us two weekends to spend at WDW. We also knew that we wanted a verandah - I liked the idea of the magic porthole rooms and they would have saved us $500, but we were spoiled by our RC verandah and went for a family stateroom with verandah. We got room 8100, Deck 8, category 4B, non-connecting - which should be a really good room, so far as I can tell from reviews and such. :cool1:

Despite having had this cruise booked since last June, we really just recently decided that we are going on it. At booking, it was a "we hope we can do this" and there were several factors that kept us from fully committing. We didn't have flights and needed to get three of them free to afford this (otherwise, add like $1000). We didn't know if we'd be able to scrape together enough in the vacation fund to take the trip we wanted (the cruise was expensive enough and adding time at WDW was really pushing it, especially because we had a Pop Century budget and Boardwalk tastes). We'd had some budget-busters in 2014, like $1700 on Dug's car (from sliding on ice into a curb!), $2800 to the vet for various things (including extracting 10 of Bailey's teeth!), and the unexpected trips to Oregon (funeral) and NYC (wedding). :faint:

As we approached the new year, we finally decided that we felt comfortable enough to commit to this trip. Dug had gotten a new job and was making more money. I had managed to accumulate a small stack of Disney Gift Cards. We were getting by okay and projections were looking good (and we'd have enough in the vacation fund to pay for the trip we wanted). Granted, I am still uneasy - this is the most expensive trip we've taken since our honeymoon in Italy in 2005 and I'd feel better with a bigger buffer in our budget, but I think it's the right choice. ::yes:: But we still couldn't pull the trigger. Because of Dug's new job. The one that took him away from half of our Aulani trip. He loves the job, don't get me wrong, but it had already put a crimp in one dream vacation and we didn't want it to cause a problem with another - in a way, this trip is our "do-over" of a long family-of-3 vacation that didn't happen exactly as we'd planned in Hawaii (though that was still an amazing trip!)

In early January, Dug had his three-month review. He wasn't comfortable committing to the trip until that had happened. He'd been burned once in his past by a job that decided they didn't need him at his 90 day review and it had made him nervous about such things ever since. :headache: We had no reason to be concerned, as his new job was going well, but it was still a hurdle that had to be jumped. Because of this, we had actually paid an extra $1/point when renting the DVC points for our trip (same person as we rented from for Aulani) - she asked for the extra dollar in exchange for making the reservation fully refundable to us (not something you normally can get with a DVC rental). So, it cost us a bit more, but got us piece of mind, as we were booking that back in November (right after Aulani), when Dug was still in his "probationary period". Thankfully, he had his 90 day review and it went great and he still has a job! :thumbsup2

After that, we were all set to book our flights. In the time between booking the cruise and now, we both had applied for and gotten Sun Country Airlines credit cards - between the two of us and their promotions for signing up, we got enough of their frequent flier points to book all three flights for free! And we'd each get a free checked bag. However, we had to put it off yet again, as Dug's job started talking about possibly having another retreat...in May! Ugh, NO! :sad2: That set off all kinds of warning flares for us, as it's exactly what kept Dug away from Aulani for half the trip, so we stayed in limbo a bit longer. Dug had several conversations with managers until they finally were able to confirm that the retreat would not be in May and his trip would be fine as planned. Whew! :crazy2:

So, we finally booked the air just 4 months out from the trip. Luckily, the number of points needed had not fluctuated at all and we were fine. And, I will admit, the number of points needed actually influenced the dates of our trip - I was thinking we'd come home on Memorial Day, but it was fewer points to fly the next day - don't have to ask me twice. :rotfl: Our initial idea of weekends at WDW somehow morphed into long weekends at WDW during the planning process. We fly in on a Thursday morning, arriving around noon. We fly out on a Tuesday afternoon. I like that we have three blocks of 4 nights on this trip, though - 4 WDW, 4 Dream, 4 WDW.

So, at this point, we have flights that we are happy with. We have DVC Studios for both WDW weekends - the rest of the payment (80%) is due mid-February. We have a great stateroom on a Dream cruise - the rest of that payment is due early March. It will be just a bit tight around here for a couple months to my cheap self! Luckily, I've been building up a small stash of Disney Gift Cards that will help to pay off the cruise. I believe our online check-in date is March 4th. I managed to get a fantastic car rental deal for to/from the port ($30-ish each way, total - from Downtown Disney hotel to Port Canaveral and back - Enterprise - work discount and no drop fee!). I think we are in a good place, but now is when all the fun begins! We have very little planned - partially due to the uncertainty and partially due to the fact that Star Wars Weekends keeps you guessing for too long before releasing the celebrities and schedules. So, hope I didn't bore you with the backstory, but that's how we got here and we've got a lot left to figure out - the fun stuff!

*Oh, ahem, I should mention that I may have...gulp...a few ADRs booked...*

*And, when I say a few, I mean...17...*

*Yes, I think I have an ADR-hoarding problem - please don't tell the dining boards! This is why I need to do this PTR - to get all this madness sorted out. Our food budget is relatively low this trip - ADRs should not exceed single digits!*

*Oooops*

I do have a TR going (link in siggie) for the Fantasy which is the sister ship to Dream if you want to read it.

We did cruise with a tot on the Magic in 2007. My Sarah was 2.5 at the time. So I have a little insight on that.... if you have any specific questions, I might be able to answer it. Our biggest problem was she was not potty trained and she couldn't use the pools (Pull Ups not allowed in any of the pools)... and she LOVED swimming. The Dream does have a toddler area which Magic didn't have at the time, so probably not as big an issue.

Our only other beef was the stroller and elevators. We would wait & wait & wait to try to get a non-crowded elevator during busy times (after shows, after dinner, for activities, ports) that would fit the stroller. The best thing for us was the next two times we did cruise the kids could do the stairs and we made them because elevators are crazy! So just go in knowing that...and it'll be fine! :)

The line itself is wonderful for kids/little ones as Disney is known to be!

Sounds like you have a great trip in the making!
I totally get how life can make you weary of pulling the trigger on and trip. That was our 2014!
I have an ADR problem myself, I always start small and it just grows!

This trip must really be meant to be! Those were a lot of factors that all had to align in order for the trip to happen - so glad that everything worked out! I'm especially glad that Dug's new job is going well!

That is nice that you had the option for your DVC reservation to be refundable, even if it meant paying a little more. Totally worth it for the piece of mind!:thumbsup2

17 ADRs - wow! Good luck on narrowing those down!

It's so funny how these trips come about. You start thinking about, get on the web to do some research, it all snowballs and you have a 2 week trip on your hands! :lmao: It does sound like you did a great job saving money where you could.

Our next trip came about when I was looking for a beach vacation. The kids wanted more to do so we looked into a Disney cruise - beach for me, Disney for them. Finally we just decided to do the World because we all love it and know we love it. :confused3

I'd love to hear more about your ADRs... :goodvibes

I so know the feeling about the cruises...we currently have one booked for October of this year, but still unsure about it. BUT one big factor is that we would get 10% off because we had booked this while on a cruise and DS would be 3 by the time we go, meaning he would be in the Kids Club for free and not the nursery! :cool1: So we're still in talks, but it's definitely a big hit on the travel fund.

Had I heard the word, 'work retreat' I would have said NOPE to any trip! Not again! But glad that it's not happening in May. PHew!

17 ADRS?! :faint: Can't wait to see what you got!

Love all the random pics of Izzy! Looks like a fun Princess event!! :)

It sounds like everything worked out just right for the trip! Budget, dates, work, free airfare! Meant to be!

And 17 ADRs??? I'm excited to see the list!

sounds like things worked out and your are comfortable monetarily which is good.

I think I am in the same boat (pun kinda intended) as you in that if we ever did a cruise I would want the veranda even knowing that the portholes are cool too

Wow 17 ADRs! Good luck narrowing that down.

Seems like at least 80% of Disney trips get an extra day or two added to them at some point during the planning process :rotfl:

My favorite part of this post was all the izzy pics thrown in at random. Lol
And your adr confession at the end hahaha

Where did you guys visit all the princesses?

I do have a TR going (link in siggie) for the Fantasy which is the sister ship to Dream if you want to read it.
Oh, cool, I'll have to check that out! Thanks! :goodvibes

Right, this has been on my mind. The Dream does have toddler areas and swim diapers are allowed there (like the splash pads). However, we've been working on potty training and I think she will be potty trained by the time May comes around. Good incentive to get it done! If not, I'm sure she'll be okay with the toddler areas and the beach at Castaway Cay.

I have read some other posts about elevator issues. Our cabin is very close to the mid-ship elevators, which I hear are the worst. However, we are not that far from another set, if needed. Also, we are on the 8th floor and my understanding is that is a good location for going up or down a few flights of stairs for a lot of the main areas - we could leave the stroller behind sometimes. Izzy does love stairs, so I'm sure she'd be fine with it. We'll see, I guess.

The line itself is wonderful for kids/little ones as Disney is known to be!
Can't wait to experience a Disney Cruise! :hyper:

Sounds like you have a great trip in the making!
I totally get how life can make you weary of pulling the trigger on and trip. That was our 2014!
I have an ADR problem myself, I always start small and it just grows!
Thanks! Yes, you've certainly had obstacles to getting your Disney fix. It's so hard to resist a good ADR!

This trip must really be meant to be! Those were a lot of factors that all had to align in order for the trip to happen - so glad that everything worked out! I'm especially glad that Dug's new job is going well!
Thanks. Yes, it was really if-fy for a bit there. I'm glad things seem to be falling into place. Hopefully things go smoothly from here on out. Dug's really happy with the job and it's improved our quality of life so much (no commute changes things for all of us).

That is nice that you had the option for your DVC reservation to be refundable, even if it meant paying a little more. Totally worth it for the piece of mind!:thumbsup2
Yes, it was really worth it. If we'd waited until now to book a room, I'm pretty sure we couldn't get what we did. I am glad we found such a reasonable person to rent from. I hate paying more than I have to for something, but this was one thing that was worth it and allowed us to breathe a bit easier in the meantime.

17 ADRs - wow! Good luck on narrowing those down!
Haha, thanks, I need it. I have duplicates of things we only want to do once...the worst is 4 of the same meal on different days. We really need to get our act together and get this trip planned, despite the lack of SWW info out so far. I don't even have a schedule in Excel yet! :scared: :rotfl2:

It's so funny how these trips come about. You start thinking about, get on the web to do some research, it all snowballs and you have a 2 week trip on your hands! :lmao: It does sound like you did a great job saving money where you could.
That is pretty much exactly how it happens for us! :lmao: I guess it's fitting, as Walt was all about making dreams become reality, right? :rotfl2: I've tried to save where I can, but it's really hard on a cruise. The whole of this trip is going to run us about twice as much as Hawaii, which is just sickening. (Though, Hawaii ran us about half as much as one would expect, so there's that. :rotfl:)

Our next trip came about when I was looking for a beach vacation. The kids wanted more to do so we looked into a Disney cruise - beach for me, Disney for them. Finally we just decided to do the World because we all love it and know we love it. :confused3
Haha, love it! These things sure morph and change quickly. Glad you all agreed on what you wanted, though! :goodvibes

I'd love to hear more about your ADRs... :goodvibes
Yes, I will get something posted soon. Though I am a bit hesitant, as I'm worried the ADR police will get me. :duck: :scared: :tiptoe: :rotfl2:

I so know the feeling about the cruises...we currently have one booked for October of this year, but still unsure about it. It's so hard to plan for cruises, being so far ahead of time and so hard to change as you get close. I've mentioned this before somewhere, but you might want to check the rate difference between DS being 2 and 3 on your cruise (shifting dates a bit, I guess). For ours, it was significantly less with her as 2, which means we could pay for a LOT of nursery hours and still be paying less overall than if she was 3. Of course, the awesome kids' clubs will only be useable during the open house times, but I think that will be okay. I think the nursery will be fun for her too. I hope, at least.

Had I heard the word, 'work retreat' I would have said NOPE to any trip! Not again! But glad that it's not happening in May. Phew!
I know! We kept saying, "Let's do it!" and then he'd hear some rumblings at work and we'd put it off again. He finally got his boss to go to HIS boss and confirm for sure that it won't be an issue. Just hoping nothing crazy changes.

17 ADRS?! :faint: Can't wait to see what you got!
Yeah, they need to start a show called, "Hoarders: ADRs" and they can feature me. :sad2: I can't help but snatch up good ones that we might want.

Love all the random pics of Izzy! Looks like a fun Princess event!! :)
Thanks! Yes, some Disney princesses escaped WDW (and all of their licensing agreements, I'm sure :rotfl2:) and came to Minnesota! :thumbsup2 Izzy was ridiculously shy with them, though. I'll throw some videos on the end of this post to prove it.

It sounds like everything worked out just right for the trip! Budget, dates, work, free airfare! Meant to be!
I sure hope so. I'm still a tad nervous about it, but super excited too. :woohoo:

And 17 ADRs??? I'm excited to see the list!
Haha, I just can't seem to help myself. And the sad thing is I've thought about making even MORE. I mean, really, we should just do all of our eating on the cruise where the food is free! Oooh, and maybe pack some empty food containers in our luggage and bring leftovers back to WDW after! :rotfl2:

Joining in! We'll be there about the same time. It will be fun to see our plans shape up.
:welcome: Oh, cool, do we overlap at all? Only a few more months and we'll be on vacation!! :woohoo:

sounds like things worked out and your are comfortable monetarily which is good.
I'd say we are "comfortable", but I am optimistic. :thumbsup2

I think I am in the same boat (pun kinda intended) as you in that if we ever did a cruise I would want the veranda even knowing that the portholes are cool too
Yay, puns! :lmao: If it meant the difference between going and not going, I'd get the inside cabin - the magic portholes do seem really cool. But, I think the verandah should be really nice, especially when Izzy's napping or after she goes to bed. And I'm excited that our room is a family one and should be relatively spacious for a cruise ship!

Wow 17 ADRs! Good luck narrowing that down.
Thank you, I will need all the luck I can get. :goodvibes It's just too darn easy to snap up ADRs. :confused3

Seems like at least 80% of Disney trips get an extra day or two added to them at some point during the planning process :rotfl:
Yeah, that's true. Any non-last-minute trip, at least! :rotfl2: Us DIS-ers just can't leave well enough alone, I think.

My favorite part of this post was all the izzy pics thrown in at random. Lol
And your adr confession at the end hahaha
Glad you enjoyed my creative breaking up of text! :thumbsup2 It's a lot easier to upload pictures from my phone than to try to find relevant photos to what I'm writing. :rotfl2:

Where did you guys visit all the princesses?
There was a "preschool fair" nearby and, probably to draw in the preschoolers, they hired Anna and Elsa to appear for an hour to do meet and greets. We were interested anyway, as we wanted to know more about preschool options and toddler activities in the area. Rapunzel was actually a complete surprise, though. We were walking around and I looked up and she walked by. We later found her at one of the booths - one of the exhibiters had apparently hired her. :thumbsup2 I'll post some videos in a minute here.

Joining in. Izzy is so cute. I am currently enjoying your current TR and look forward to your cruise and wdw.
:welcome: Glad to have you here and over on the TR! And, thanks - we are biased, but think Izzy's pretty adorable. :flower3:

So, for those interested in our recent "Disney" Princess meets, I've uploaded the videos. They are not very good, but you'll get the idea. Izzy was so excited to meet Anna and Elsa while we waited in line. They were playing some Frozen songs and she was like, "I hear Anna singing!" She said she wanted to hug them. Well, once she got the chance, she decided that clinging to my leg was a better plan. And I was trying to take video like that, which didn't work so great (Dug was walking around the booths getting info on stuff for us). But, we did get Anna to sing for us, which was a hoot:

(click to watch)

Izzy was a bit more willing to meet with Rapunzel later. It was kind-of like at WDW - she needs a bit to warm up to the characters, I think. She was still shy, but willingly went up and high-fived and took a pic with her (sorry, most of the video is blurry):
