Is it worth having a Disney Visa?

I read in this thread that you must spend 20. Disney Visa reward dollars on each purchase of at least 50. From what I have been told (by the Disney Visa reps), that is not the case. You can spend your reward dollars on any purchase, regardless of the amount. The only problem (which in my case, doesn't seem to be a big problem) is that you do not get change if what you are purchasing with your reward $ costs less than the face value of the reward $ dollar denomination you are using. For example, if you bought a bag of 2. mickey pretzels (at WDW) with a reward cert with a 10. face value, you would get the pretzels for free, but lose 8. worth of rewards. This reward cert would be better spent towards lunch, a souvie, your room balance (all at WDW), or anything that was at least the amount of the reward cert value. By the way, you could get these reward certs for the DS instead of WDW if you wanted. For me, this reward card works because I get something I love for free, and I had no previous reward card. Also, with the demise of the DC, I suspect this credit card may be one of the only discount sources still left for WDW vacations and DS merchandise (when and if those discounts become available). If you have the time, investigate your options to see what reward card works best for you.

Yes the spend 20 on 50 is only the example they use when you get the rewards certificates.

We are planning on using our two certificates for refillable mugs..and pay the difference in cash.

Yes, the mugs are free.. but as my hubby pointed out.. they are actually $2K mugs! (Thats some expensive mugs he said!)

which ones are worth it?
Don't you need at least 20K miles to buy a ticket? If each dollar spent is one mile, that is equal to $200. I bought my airline ticket for $160. So using a card would cost me an extra $40 per ticket plus the annual fee? And you might be stuck with one airline and have blackout dates?
At least with cash rewards you can buy what you want: Disney, hotel, airline, groceries...

I decided not to apply for the Disney Visa card, since we have other rewards cards.

For airline miles, I like the Starwood American Express card. There is no annual fee the first year and $30 thereafter. You earn 1 Starpoint per dollar charged, and the points can be transferred into many airline FF programs. When you transfer 20,000 points to an airline, Starwood adds 5,000 bonus miles - equaling a free domestic ticket on most airlines. The points can also be used for free stays at Starwood Hotels: Sheraton (like the WDW Dolphin); Westin (WDW Swan); W Hotels; Four Points Hotels; St. Regis Hotels; and The Luxury Collection.

Do the reward certificates expire? We are not planning to go back to Disney for a few years :( but if I apply now and receive my rewards now will they expire before I need them????? I have searched the info I have received on the card but can't seem to find any information about expirations.

Also, what are "qualifying purchases"? Can we use them to pay for rooms, meals, gift shop purchases? I thought that I read somewhere that the list is somewhat restrictive.

We plan to drive so I don't need airline miles, but we are trying to decide between getting a cash back card from our current cc company or this card. We love our current company and feel very secure with them. DH is a little concerned with going with the company that the Disney Card is with. I mostly want the Disney Card for the special offers on trips. Does anyone think they will offer the "Disney Club" type offers for card holders next year?

Thanks.

Laura

I currently have a Discover card as my only rewards card, and it is great except that some of the stores I shop at don't accept it. These same stores do accept Visa, so the Disney reward card would be valuable to offset that. Same issue with Amex.

I'm thinking primarily of Groceries and some online purchases. I'm also a DVC member with a Disney "mortgage"... if I choose to prepay the principal at some time in the future, I could do so with the Visa but not the Discover card, I believe.
