Happy day before Thanksgiving Jamborini's & Kidanities:goodvibes

Morning Js and Ks! So I usually work nights (I'm an editor for a newspaper), but because of the holiday week, my schedule is all screwy and here I am at work at 7 a.m. But being up this early got me thinking about Disney (because it's virtually the only place on Earth where I wake up early). I want to know from you experts, what are your favorite nooks and crannies you like to visit during your stay at AKL?

I really like the rocking chairs on the main level, they're in an outside area just to themselves. And loved the observation areas on the 1st floor, some of the animals were so close I could see the hairs on their chinny chin chins! Oh, and defnitely check out the flamingo area behind the pool. So fun to watch them.

...ITA - we stayed at WDW twice during Presidents' Week, which is much earlier in the year, and it was definitely okay to swim then, so March should be good.

That is good news. When we were there in January I really wanted to take a dip, but with the air being so cold I didn't think I could handle it. But since the pools are heated I'm sure it would have been fine in the water.

I got waylaid! Happy Thanksgiving Eve, Js & Ks! :sunny:

Thanks Elin.... How are you and Bob this morning?

Bob is fine. I still have no voice, but I taught some private lessons this morning and my students didn't laugh too hard. ;)

Hope you and David are making a packing list!!

We are staying at the AKL for the first time this February. We stayed at the GF last year and enjoyed it, but visited AKL for dinner and our kids really want to stay at AKL this year.

So I just got a pin # in the mail (very exciting!). I had already made reservations for a 1 bedroom villa, savannah view, in Jambo house with 7 day ph, insurance, flight, etc. No dining plan as of yet.

I just called to see if the discount could be applied to my current reservation. The Disney travel agent said there were no available 1 bedrooms for the pin number but she did have available a deluxe studio with savannah view, or a 1 bedroom villa with standard view. Both choices come with dining and cost significantly less than our current reservation.

I just wondered whether anyone has stayed in the studios; and if so, what you thought of them? My husband is emphatic on staying in a place that has more room than last year's GF standard sized room. (The kids and I couldn't care less.) However, I think the kids are going to want a savannah view.

We need to sit down as a family but I'd love some advice from those of you who have stayed at AKL. Which rooms did you stay in? Would you do anything differently on your next stay?

I know that people with kids do it all the time, but I noticed that word was plural in your post so that's at least two. I can't imagine having that many people in a studio, but that's just me. For me the point of staying at AKL is to sit on the balcony and watch the animals with morning coffee, or evening glass of wine. There are plenty of wonderful public places to view the animals all around the lodge, so you don't NEED to have a savannah view.

I know that's not very helpful advice. My last stay was in a two bedroom unit with my spouse and parents. Previously we had a one bedroom CL room which they upgraded us to a two bedroom. Our next stay will be three of us in a Kidani one bedroom.

I've only stayed in studios at the Grand Californian and after our last stay (2 of us) we decided not to do studios again. The room & bed just feel too small.

We have stayed one bedroom several times at Jambo House and it is just the two of us, we stayed in a studio this summer at BCV and we said we would not do it again....

I know not much help either but that is just us...

I wanted to wish everyone here a "HAPPY THANKSGIVING."

This year I would like to add one more thing that I am thankful for:

I am thankful for all my friends on the AKL Lite Thread. You are the most caring, wonderful, and wild bunch of people. I'm glad that I have so many great friends that are there in good times and bad.

We're DVC members and always have stayed in a 1-bedroom savanna view. We have stayed in a studio at Hilton Head several times for only short visits, but even though it's just DH and me, we felt crowded and uncomfortable in a studio (they all are deluxe studios, by the way). I can't imagine staying in a studio with children, but, I admit, we are spoiled and enjoy a lot of space. I would take the 1-bedroom standard view instead of the studio savanna view. There are many excellent viewing areas at Jambo House, it you need to walk only a very short distance to find one near your room. There are so many great activities at Jambo and Kidani that you probably won't spend as much time in your room watching animals as you expect to spend. A villa gives you a washer and dryer, and that means you don't have to pack as many clothes since you easily can wash. The full kitchen is great even if you don't plan to cook any meals. We often brought back leftovers from dinner and had them the next day for lunch, and we fixed cereal or English muffins every morning for breakfast. If your kids snack as much as most kids do, you will enjoy the kitchen. You can get milk, juice, cheese, peanut butter, bread, crackers, fruit, etc., in the giftshop and Mora for quick snacks to keep in your villa for the kids. Also,be sure to take the kids to Kidani to their outdoor viewing area. It is on ground level, and you are eye-level with the animals there. We love having coffee on the balcony and watching animals, but I'd rather have extra space if I had to choose.

Hmmmm, I have only ever stayed in studios and find no problem with them, but I don't have kids. I have heard that the GF rooms are smaller than the ones at AKL, but I don't have first hand knowledge. After staying at AKL with a savannah view I don't ever want to do anything but a savvanah view, but like Alison said, you don't NEED a savannah view since there really are so many viewing areas. With the deluxe studio you can make the couch the second bed and back into a couch in the morning so that frees up a significant amount of space. But, if the DH wants more space so he can have alone time with you then I would definitely go with the 1 bedroom. You will still get the wonderful atmosphere of the resort, and how wonderful that the discount includes dining and is much less!
