Is it soda or is it pop? Once and for all

I think someone should post this as a poll, so we can get a tally!

And include Coke as an option....maybe even sofr drink. You know, I've even heard folks say 'soda pop'. Not a bad compromise..:D

It's pop here in Indy. Or at least in my part. :teeth:
It's pop on my side of town also, but I refuse to call it anything but soda.

I actually HAVE heard "soda pop" some places. Here, a soda is ice cream and fizz water.

Its Coke here....then the flavor is Diet Coke, Sprite, Root Beer whatever....

Okay so if they order a coke and then are asked what flavor, you just say coke again? Odd...but I guess its like people calling tissues Kleenex.

Why is it rude if someone orders a brand of soda that they carry? I very rarely look at the type of soft drink offered if I'm at a sit down place. I always order a coke (sooo much better than pepsi ;) ) and if they serve pepsi, they just ask if Pepsi is okay.

I agree, Evil Princess -- sounds strange to me. Or if you order a coke and when asked what flavor, you say Pepsi?

For me it's a soda or a soft drink. But I don't usually even use those terms since when ordering I just say what brand I want.

I have always said Kleenex. When I say or hear the word tissue I think of toilet paper.

Well if any of you are in Boston, don't order a pop. No one will have any idea what you want. We have Tonic. We also have Soda. Mostly though we have Tonic.

It's coke. If you say soda or pop in the south, people are going to look at you sadly and shake our heads at you.

I've got to agree with that one! I have never heard someone ask "What flavor" for Coke though. If you want a Sprite, Dr. Pepper, etc., you just ask for it by name.

But "Coke" is the accepted generic for soft drinks in general.

Can I get y'all a cold drank? :p

Soda.

Pop is a nursery rhyme with a weasel.

And if you're from the NY metro area, you'll also hear.....SODER!!!

And soda is something you bake with. As far as I know, that is the only use of the word around here.

Man, y'all talk funny.... ;)

Around here Desota State Park is sometimes called Soda Park.:teeth:

We call it tonic in the Boston area.... Coke is coke.. and who the heck knows what soda or pop is... LOL

When I first moved here from California and someone asked me if I wanted a "tonic" I thought "why do they want to give me medicine?" :p

I call a Coke, Coke and anything else is a soda or soda pop. It's NEVER a tonic unless it's tonic water.

But I am pretty sure I've heard of the Boston Pops :p

I've only heard of Tonic when a barber throws it on your neck or someone is mixing a drink.
