Is it rude...

Hi - I have a question - is it rude of me or frowned upon by the waiter/waitress to only order appetizer/or soup/salad at dinner places. I'm wondering for the following scenarios...(we are NOT on the dining plan)

My 4 year old and I plan on going to Be Our Guest one night, just the 2 of us. We are fairly picky eaters in our family and to be completely honest, nothing on the dinner menu strikes me as something I'd want to order - except the french onion soup and a salad. My daughter would probably order the steak. Is it OK for me just to order the soup/salad - I know our bill would not be very high and I know it's such a popular place to eat. I feel guilty taking up a spot for soup/salad, but my daughter really wants to eat there. (and yes, it probably has to be dinner due to scheduling time for her and I to get away together from the family)

Also, same scenario at LeCellier - my son and I will be eating there one evening together and we honestly just want the soup. Again, rude? or frowned upon?

As I type this out, I feel like it's a silly question, but I'll ask it anyway! lol
Thanks so much for any feedback....

Why do you think it would be rude? I don't feel Disney is going to go broke because you did not buy the more expensive menu items and you could always leave larger tip if you wanted to. Plus fat people like me eat more than we should. You're just balancing things out.

Thanks for the reply - I'm not really sure why I think it would be rude, I guess it seems kind of silly, but I feel like these places are so hard to get ressies for sometimes, that I feel guilty for going there for soup - lol

It's a somewhat common question...can I go somewhere to just get dessert, etc etc. Others have wondered the same thing.

I personally do not think it is. You probably won't be taking the table for as long as someone ordering much more, especially if they are having it in courses, so you'll clear up the table for the next person quicker.

I think that a server wants diners to be happy with their meal and experience.

We will be doing this on our upcoming trip. We will be getting two BOG reservations, one for dinner and we will be making a second reservation later in the trip. We are only going to dinner to meet Beast! If we don't like the meal during our first visit, we will be going to our second reservation for dessert and a drink, just so we can meet Beast again.

It's absolutely not rude, you are not required to order anything specific. You have a reservation and what you choose to order is entirely your choice! :) If your server is rude, remember it's THEIR problem and not yours!

The beast does not walk around to the tables. You can meet him when you are finished eating and can take a picture with him. You can skip that part if you want!

I think it depends on the restaurant and the particular server. Not all servers are there to make you happy, as we have learned from recent reviews, they are there just for the money. My DD and I had an early lunch reservation at Chefs and only wanted onion soup and dessert because it was really hot out and we aren't big eaters. Our server was so rude to us when we ordered and while serving the soups that we cancelled the dessert and got out of there.

I always tip over 20% but when I do the small meal that took up a reservation I tip even higher for taking up their space. The service issue could be because it was at Chefs so it won't stop us from ordering this way somewhere else.

Beast walks through each dining room approximately every hour. He doesn't approach the tables, he just generally waves and leaves. You can then meet him in the foyer for photos, no autographs. He isn't there for lunch.

You're going on the vacation for you and your family. Do whatever will make you happy; if a server gets upset, oh well..

You can order whatever you want. The server should NOT give you any crap whatsoever. As to whether they will or not, it's a tossup. But they shouldn't.

I'm going back to Be Our Guest and I'm only ordering the mussels. I didn't like the entrees but the mussels were awesome.

ABSOLUTELY NOT RUDE;)...you have just as much right to be there as anyone else and you're eating, so what difference does it make what you eat?? I do that a lot a any restaurant because I try to eat "light". I also do this a lot at WDW restaurants.

Example: Nothing like those delicious Prince Edward Chardonnay steamed mussels with that amazing pesto sauce at FF which is a meal for me!! (and it's an app) I usually get that and a salad and thats enough for me!:thumbsup2 I could never eat a whole app by myself and then order an entree. Don't worry about it, you're fine! (not silly at all, anything goes around here ;))

Thanks for the help-so glad to be able to eat there :)

I am certainly not going to order more at a restaurant than what I want just because someone wants a bigger tip. If I wanted those kinds of meals, I would be on the dining plan. I do have a tendency towards padding the tip of a server if my order is a bit light and they give me exceptional service.

Now, I do think it would be slightly rude if you go in, only order an appetizer, and stay for 3 hours.

It's entirely possible that we may only order dessert at our Be Our Guest ADR. The only time I could get is at 9pm, so we may end up eating CS earlier in the night, but I'll still want to see BOG and get our meeting with the Beast. This is especially since it has a cancellation policy. It will be worth my while to at least go in and spend a little bit with something in return, instead of cancelling and being charged as much anyways.
If we do only order dessert, I don't expect it to take more than 30 minutes for us to eat it, in which case our table will turn over very quickly.

Its not rude at all. If thats all you want, then by all means, thats all you should order. I personally wouldnt go to a restaurant and just have a soup thou. I'll be honest, I couldnt do it. Lol. I'd probably order soup AND salad, followed by dessert. But not just a bowl of soup.

We do this all the time! In fact we just got back and ordered like this much of the trip. It's just too much food to all order entrees and since we're touring the parks I can't bring what's left with me. I usually order a salad and an appetizer at most restaurants I go to in my regular life. Even then I only have room for dessert some of the time!

It's your ADR and your meal. Order whatever you want and enjoy. It is not rude at all! Have a great time.

You should bear no guilt, you will pay and tip accordingly I'm sure and once you're done, the table will be free for others!

At Le Cellier, we frequently, even before the 2TS change, had lunch there, having a bowl of soup and an appetizer only. I can't eat a huge meal mid-day and do the parks! But I still want that soup!

I've had a few waiters over the years comment, "That's All" and yes, that's all! It isn't for anyone else, much less a server to determine what and how much I should eat. My burden, "only to pay for it"!

Enjoy BOG, the soup was tasty, as were the trio of salads!

If it's a meal with a full menu rather, there should never be the assumption on the part of the staff that you are going to order at least a 2 course meal. DH and I love to just pop around for appetizers and have never been treated improperly by wait staff when doing so. I also look at it this way...what if you sat down, had some soup and then suddenly decided you wanted more. The rude server could pretty much ensure that's not going to happen. i.e. not everyone is on DDP or using credits for everything. I mean heaven forbid I went to a restaurant to eat the 1 thing I really wanted.

Sooooo, I think you're just fine :goodvibes
