Is it rude to expect that people will take off their shoes . . .

Our house is in a constant state of renovation, and I have 5 critters, so I always tell guests to leave their shoes on due to the dust, dirt, possibility of nails etc. I always get the strangest looks when I tell people to leave them on and they always look so guilty if some dirt gets tracked in. Between the animals and renovation that small bit of dirt is nothing in the grand scheme of things...

Maybe one day I will have a nice clean house, but at the moment I'm just dealing with it. The first thing I did through was rip out all the carpets - with that much pet hair, you just can't win! (especially with 2 white animals, 2 black animals, and an orange one thrown in for some contrast!).

I can't imagine not taking off my shoes at someone else's home. As a matter of fact, I get real ticked when dh sometimes "forgets" to take them off in our home. It grosses me out thinking what is on the bottom of shoes.

I guess I am the odd Canadian out here.

I always wear my shoes in the house. I don't feel comfortable without my shoes on. I figure that my comfort comes first in my own home. If and when the carpets get ruined then I will replace them. Of course if they are muddy or snowy etc I will take them off.

I do take my shoes off when I go to someone else's house though, except my parents house. Shoes are allowed in their house too!

We always take our shoes off in anyone's house - summer or winter - however, I have a friend who insists that the oils and sweat in our feet (if bare) ruin a carpet far faster than dust and dirt. I can sort of understand where she is coming from. Oily feet would wreck carpet but I don't think it would hurt linoleum (sp?) Does anyone else feel that way?

Oily feet? I sometimes get an oily nose, but feet? That sounds pretty far out there to me. I don't think I've seen any advertisements for how to get rid of foot acne. When they start to market clearasil for feet, I'll worry about my feet being too oily. Until then, I'll keep slathering them with lotion so they don't crack and bleed. :goodvibes

I know I shouldn't do this, but :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Sorry, couldn't help it....

This doesn't seem like much of an issue really. I mean, last I heard, socks were sold in each and every province as well as all three territories.

Shoes off here too. Always. Even servicepeople will automatically take their shoes off at the door.

All I can say to this is...........eeeewwww.......gross!

I have a theory on this.

I think that Canadians take off their shoes when entering a house beacuse of all our different seasons. If you think about there is always something dirty or wet being tracked in on our shoes. Mud in the spring and the fall and snow and slush in the winter. I always remove my shoes and wouldn't think of doing anything else.

Or maybe us Canadians are just too polite.
