Is it possible to go to college on a Band Scholarship?

Is there any way he could take this required course in summer school or at a local community college and transfer it back to HS?

I would look into this route as well. I know that our high school also offers some courses that start an hour before school so kids can fit in required courses if they want to do band/choir, etc. Some schools will also let you do an independent study to get in required courses. I would have him talk with the high school counselor and see what options he might have.

Getting a music scholarship for a non-music major is pretty rare-at least a full ride one anyway. I know many schools will give a nominal scholarship if you participate in band/orchestra but don't major in music--say $500-1000 or so.

If he is very heavy into the academics sticking with the Band for all 4 yrs shows commitment and "well roundedness" in an area other than academics which is important for making you stand out from all the other kids that are in the top 5% of their classes and necessary for the top schools. Something else to think about versus another computer class.

Based on your answers I would say there is no chance he will get a full music scholarship. He isn't a music major - strike one. He plays saxaphone - strike two. Saxaphones are the easiest instrument to play and are a dime a dozen (more or less). I don't know of many programs that clamor for missing saxaphones. Oboes, horns, bassoons... that's where the money lies (and how I got scholarships - a music major that played horn.)

If music isn't his passion, don't push it. He might get a small scholarship to play in the band, but if he isn't a major in that field then it is highly unlikely.
