I agree with you , but I think this article doesn’t do a very good job of explaining it, and the pictures don’t show it, either.

Meghan’s wedding dress in her wedding to Trevor Engelson in September, 2011, resembled the gown that Kate had worn to her wedding reception in April, 2011.

Because they both have a jeweled belt? That's the only similarity I see and it's not at all an uncommon feature in wedding dresses.

I think it's quite similar. Not that she consciously copied it, but it may have just been in the back of her memory. It's hard to believe she didn't see Kate's dress, since the rest of the entire world did. It was in every magazine.

I agree with you. They're both white, and both have a jeweled belt. But IMHO those are both common wedding dress features, and the similarity stops there (at least in that picture of Meghan's dress). The neckline is different, the fullness of the skirt is different, the overall silhouette is different.

Plus, Kate's dress was a pretty well-guarded secret till the big day, wasn't it? If they got married only 5 months apart, there's a decent chance that Meghan already had her dress by the time she saw Kate's. You have to order those things SO far in advance (and I doubt Meghan bought off the rack.)

In the article I read about how “the institution” favored Kate, there were a bunch of contrasting headlines where Kate was portrayed positively and Meghan negatively for similar situations. One example was Kate’s “down to earth style” in jeans but Meghan “didn’t look very royal” in her jeans outfit. To be fair, the outfits shown weren't that similar. Kate looked like she stepped out of the JCrew catalogue, and Meghan's looked like she was going out to grab bagels on a Saturday morning and hoping not to be recognized (jeans, oversized sweater, hat and sunglasses.) I'm sure Meghan has looked wonderful in jeans, but the photo they chose was pretty 'casual.'

I’m not a royal watcher usually so I was asking if these were the types of media headlines she was upset about — or whether there were “worse”/overtly racist stories, too... and it sounds like it was mainly stuff like this (plus social media comments where people could get pretty vicious.) I’m sure it’s frustrating to be dogged on in the media, but I am surprised Meghan expected “support” from the palace over stuff like that. I can hear my mother’s advice about middle school gossips ringing in my ears: “don’t even dignify that with a response.”

I wonder if M (or H for that matter) have considered the hurt they have caused, or if they're too wrapped up in themselves.

In 1947 after WWII, when things were still very hard in the UK, the Queen (then Princess) married Philip (now Duke of Edinburgh). It was a stretch for many when hardships were great, but people needed to come together and, apparently, this helped lift spirits and unite the country.

In current difficult times (more grief, more hardship), M&H have popped out of their Santa Barbara mansion seemingly just to share all their alleged resentments, complain about money(!), create divisions and bring people down. What was it they said, "We can all be of service"?


I , also, still don't understand how anyone in any kind of official position would decide just to believe their claims? ... Because I don't understand how any human concerned with human rights would allow what was effectively unchallenged testimony in a global court to make up their mind? (Especially now, with all the holes appearing.)

How does this get to the truth and without the truth how can you know who really upset or limited who, let alone whose rights were violated and whose were protected?

I have always heard many ladies pattern their dresses, wedding, maternity etc. after what the royals wear. I absolutely think designers and retailers count on this. I see enough similarities between the 2 dresses in these two photos to make me think it’s a possibility.

Oh, I think they do. Typically, after a big royal or society wedding, all the bridal vendors include knock-offs in their collections just as soon as they can.

I think Meghan's dress is similar to Kate's...but it's a very common style and there is no proof whatsoever she was trying to emulate her. I'm not going to criticize her on that.

It was the late Norman Hartnell's idea, and it's an old one, circa 1952. The idea was copied from the Queen's Coronation Gown, which had the same representation of flowers, but in her case, they were in their natural colors as well. The V&A interviewed Hartnell about the process he used to design the gown, and it is part of their online exhibits: https://www.vam.ac.uk/articles/silver-and-gold-by-norman-hartnell
(There is even mention of how the Queen thought that doing them all in white would be suitable for a bride, but that since she was older and already had children she thought she could splash out on having them done in color for the Coronation.)

Hartnell died in 1979.

PS: I found a photo of one of Hartnell's embroidery samples for that gown, which is now in a museum in Australia (the sample, that is: the gown itself is occasionally displayed at Buckingham Palace, but it is very heavy and the base silk has yellowed over the years, so they can never leave it out for very long:

Didn't Sarah Ferguson have Andrew's initials embroidered in her gown or something similar? I should probably just google, but her wedding dress is one of my favorites. Her bridal look was top notch. I love how she had the flowers in her hair on the way in and the tiara on her way out.

I, too, really loved Sarah's wedding look. It was very romantic. She and Andrew were really into the Victorian era, which is a romantic time, and would dress up in that era for costume parties and things. Victorian is one of my favorites, too -- so romantic -- so I always enjoyed seeing them highlight the era. Too bad things went bad for that couple. Their girls seem to be just delightful. Whatever went on there, they brought up charming girls.
