Is it normal for space maintainers to "hurt so much" at first?

DD10 just got a space maintainer yesterday. Yesterday it was the whole it fells weird, a little soar thing. Now she's whining/crying that it hurts and is rubbing against the side of her mouth. Is this typical or should I call the orthodontist?

It's typical and could last a few days. If it's not better by Monday then call the Orthodontist.

Yeah I went through a few nights of agony when I was younger. I still remember the pain, but it only lasted a couple of days.

If your teeth are crowded together, you bet.

My oldest was the one crying and my youngest had big gaps so not a big deal.

Do you see any sores in her mouth? Examine it and if it is rubbing then I would have her seen.

Yes. The worst pain occurs after the spacers are inserted because they just wedged her teeth apart. She should feel better in a couple of days. Tylenol will help.

Yes, My son was miserable too.
Tylenol is your best bet right now.

Good Luck.

Thank you everyone. She does have a traffic jam in her mouth. Also didn't need spacers, so maybe that's amplifying the discomfort. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't a fascist mom.

It's typical. Give it a few days. Now if it is rubbing her cheek raw, then give them a call right away, but if it's just sore, then I would wait. DD is always very sore after an adjustment. Last month she had heavier wire put in and she was sore for a few days. Tylenol or motrin helps a lot.

My son had the same problem. His spacers were more painful than the actual braces. Like Magic Mom said, adjustments are usually bad for a few days. Hopefully, Tylenol will give her some relief. It helps my son.

Totally agree......my sons spacers were also more painful, then the actual braces have been.......we were "lucky" though, because the ortho told us this beforehand, so we expected it and were prepared as best we could be for the pain.

OP, tell your child to hang in there....good luck.....nothing worse then seeing your child in pain.

Out of curiosity...
What exactly do you mean by space-maintainer???

I had the spacers that go in between the molars, at the gum-line, so that there is room to put the metal bands on to put the braces on.

Those did hurt!
Ibuprofen is my pain reliever of choice.

But, if something is rubbing and abrasive....
That is something that I would look into.
I don't see how these could be abrasive.

I also had a palatal expander... a contraption that goes on your upper palate, across the roof of your mouth, and actually widens the upper palate. There is a seam down the middle of the bone in your upper mouth that can be widened in children and young teens. That wasn't painful in the same way that the spacers were. But, it was still just awful!

I read this thread as Space MOUNTAINEERS and wondered what that was. :lmao:
