Is it me, or does this girl look overdone?

it looks like she's wearing leggings, you can see a peak of pink before the picture cuts off

you may think she's over done, but those lights are bright, and they might have over estimated the make up.

the glitter looks nice for what they want. When i was her age i loved glitter. The hair is big, but since in the pictures its snowing, it looks cute, like some could get caught in it.

just some words from a former little girl who did that!

ITA. No one can even see how short the skirt actually is and the rest of the outfit is fine IMO. :sad2:

I like it too, and because of this thread, it will probably end up in DD's closet. She just walked over to me and say, "Hey! Cute outfit! Is that what you're getting me for my birthday?"

Not surprising that so many Moms of young girls think it's cute, her hair and makeup is ok....that's what so many girls look like nowadays,,,trying to grow up too fast.

Yup! DD is 9, and she's all about glitter. I'm even having to experiment with some paint because she's wanting glittery walls!

That sounds kind of cool!

Not to get too sidetracked, but that's a cool idea... I wouln't mind hearing how that works out. ::yes::

I know it's the same outfit as the model is wearing. I never had a problem with the length of the other skirt. It's likely a skort but even if it isn't with heavy tights it would be fine. My DD has tights that are as heavy as leggings. I just think the acid wash and glitter are too mature for a little girl especially when paired with that jacket. It's something I'd expect on a 12-14 yo not a 6-8 yo.
You are right! I just checked the description and it is a skort. In fact, all the skorts are that short. The skirts are much longer.
I like the skort but to me the top looks kind of funny with the stripe down the front. :confused3

I'm not crazy about the vest, plus it'd be too warm to wear here anyway, but the rest of the outfit is cute. And I could only wish I could have hair like that. :rotfl: :rotfl:

I'll admit it's been obnoxious trying to find decent clothing for my pre-teens lately. What is it with all the jeans out there having designs, doo-dads, what-have-yous on them?! My girls simply wanted plain jeans. Took me shopping through multiple websites before I finally found some.

I'm VERY conservative, and dd8 wears skorts that length all the time. I just don't see it as inappropriate at all. I do almost all dd's shopping at Gymboree, and her skorts are that length. She'd love that outfit. It's too much for me, but it doesn't offend me, which is different.

Well, I see a beautiful little girl....nothing more. I find it disturbing that a bunch of "adults" would be comparing this child to a hooker. :sad2:
That wasn't the context of my earlier concern, though that's a bit disturbing as well. I was concerned that folks seeing sex in everything will communicate that overreaction to their children, setting them up for hang-ups, overreactions, what-have-you, in the years to come.

I think, for me, there is a crucial distinction between not liking something, and making inappropriate and baseless judgements about the people who do like it.

While I see nothing wrong with the clothes, there is something creepily Jon-Benet about her.

I think she looks adorable and the outfit is very cute.

Sure, she's a bit decked out - but she is modeling!

I don't think she looks too grown up. I don't think that outfit is trying to dress her older. In fact, I think I'd only see girls in the 5-9 range wearing something like that. I don't think I'd ever see an older girl wearing something like that! That outfit represents a little girl to me, not an older kid.

I certainly don't see it as sexualizing. I'll tell you what I do think is though - the swimsuits at Limited Too this summer all had build-up tops. You know, padding so it looks like they have curves on top. I'm talking in sizes 8-14. :furious:

It's even more disturbing how many "adults" see it totally fine to sexualize young girls and justify it as "adorable" or "cute" - it's stomach turning actually. Let kids be kids already - there is absolutely no need for a young girl to be pimped out like she is looking to turn a trick or pick up a one night stand at a bar.

MTE. :thumbsup2

This thread WAS helpful to me though. I've been having trouble with Gymboree's website since I moved and I need some clothes for DD and DS. Childrens Place clothes are sooooo inexpensive. I am off to spend some money! :)

See, I guess I'm one of those awful parents who doesn't see that photo as sexualizing. I see a girl with long, very curly hair who had her hair styled for the photo. If left untouched, I'm sure it would be pointing in all directions and matted up like a nest. Fewer products probably could have left it looking tamer, but that girl just has a ton of hair.

Her outfit covers her almost completely. I prefer it to low-rider shorts with "Angel" printed across the butt and a midriff-baring top.

She's not posed bent over, or with boys, or anything like that.

She has make-up on. I'll give you that. I think anyone in print advertising (or on TV) has some makeup on, but hers may look a bit too strong for her age group. I, however, don't see it as caked on. Maybe I need to take another look.

Is this photo really sexualizing? I guess that's where other parents like me are coming from -- why does styled hair and a stylish outfit mean "sexualizing?"

Yes, that demonstrates what I believe is a resonable delineation of what it means to sexualize clothing: If they're padding tops, then that does seem to be over the line, since the size of breasts is meaningless in anything other than a sexual context.

A lot of parents must feel that it is a cute outfit, because I can't find it in dd's size. :guilty: I love the purple!

I like these clothes too. Is this little girl's hair too big? At what age do we start telling girls that straight hair is more desirable? :confused3 Just wanted to know when I should tell dd that her curly hair is less than.

See, that's me too. I'm one of the most conservative parents I know. Sent DD back to her room this morning to try again because the shirt she had on was way too short! I don't get what the big deal with the outfit is. I don't "like" the jacket either (DD does  ) but not because it looks too old for her - I just don't like it.

Her hair - well, I wouldn't want to deal with it every morning of my life, but it's HER hair. You can't help what you're born with. I hate trying to get DD's hair to just do something every morning too instead of being so limp and lifeless. She has the world's thinnest hair!

The makeup - it's a photo shoot. Show me one child in a photo shoot who doesn't have on makeup.

I do have a problem with outfits that try to sexualize young children - but I don't see how this one is doing anything like that. The only body part that is revealed is her hand!
