Some parents teach their children lots of things: cuss words, how to throw a punch, disrespect for people of other races and religions. Should all of those things be allowed in school also?

If a parent doesn't like the rules the school has set, then the parent can homeschool their child or send them to a private school. That's the great thing about this country, we have choices.

I teach my children when they walk into someone's house, they follow that person's rules. School is really no different, when they walk into school, they are to follow the school rules.

Could not have possibly said this any better :thumbsup2

There is probably background to these stories. I would need to know the situation before I pass judgement.

As far as schools "taking the parent out of the equation", I find that to be the purpose of school.:confused3

Heck I am trying to beat it into my 7th grader that she has to be the one to take charge of her schooling. She is getting it slowly and painfully. That is one of the goals for middle school.

I am here for guidance, a go-between if I need to step in, or plenty of discussion.

Are you talking about the third grader in NJ with the Bible during quiet time? She wasn't suspended, she was told to put the bible away. After the parent called the school, the principal and teacher admitted it was a mistake and apologized. Bible reading is allowed during quiet time. No one was suspended.
Of course after that the parents contacted Fox News and a lawyer.

Was there another case of a student who actually was suspended for reading a bible? Can you give a link? Thanks.

work with the parents and parents with the school.. we are the childs first teachers and the parents.. and we should have a say on how are kids are taught.. sure there are bad parents but there are bad teachers who cant teach... it just seems like teachers are tring to be so political correct they are forgetting the meaning of teaching, is to teach not to put your beliefs on kids

Maybe because a lot of schools get sued by other minded parents? Just saying.

My issue with the little boy and the drawing...

My understanding is that they are demanding he have a psychiatric evaluation. To me, that is overstepping bounds and stepping on the parents and that child's constitutional rights if it is deemed true. (Basing on news reports, I do not have any back story nor have I seen the picture.)

While that is all well and good you are asking for something that is just not realistic.

"and we should have a say on how are kids are taught".....

We don't so that is why people homeschool.

OK, I will play. Here would be my recent complaint....;)

I wish that EVERY kid was able to take the ACT/SAT in 7th grade WHO WANTED TO. Not just kids that had great scores.
It should be a choice for every student.

Actually, there was alot of back story on that one. Apparently there had been many issues before this one and they had been working with the family. Also, the picture that the media is showing, was not the picture that was drawn in class. The school never suspended the boy over the picture all though they did order the eval, based in part on the previous issues. Oh, and of course, the father says the school owes him a "small lump sum". :headache:
There was a meeting set up between the parents and the school admin. The parents requested it and set it up, then never bothered showing up.

Here is the latest from the Boston Globe. http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/12/17/christmas_is_still_on_in_taunton/

The one about the kid getting in trouble for having his hair to long is stupid. It's none of the schools business how long anyones hair is.

Of course, we are getting our info from the media and they are notorious for getting it wrong half the time.

Talk about apples & oranges. How is reading a bible, drawing a picture of Christ on the Cross the same as cussing, punching etc... One is usually handled in a school rules book the other is not.

The hair thing well if it is against school policy then he should have adhered to it. If no rule then set one.

I remember hearing about that one. From what I understand after the child did the drawing he placed his name on the cross and stated it was him (the child) dying. I think the concern was more along the line of depression/suicide prevention but I could be wrong.

This is what I heard as well...

Very easy... Nowadays too many parents are abdicating their control. Schools can't "TAKE" any thing. IMO. Parent's have forgotten to teach their kids basic things like manners, respect and tolerance so now when they get to school. the school is left to deal with this little "princess". Maybe they have swung a little to the extreme but maybe if they had parents who stepped up to the plate, they wouldn't feel the need to do so many other things.
Do you know how many teachers now have to be parent, sociologist and policemen? How many schools have to serve breakfast just so the kid can get a decent meal?

How many times have you been to Disney and the kid is running amoke while the parent does nothing?

Sorry, I've seen too many "questionable" examples of parenthood lately to even imagine what teachers and schools have to deal with.

Aaaahh---I did not know that.

I heard on a ...ummm....conservative radio program and then on an ABC News update that aired on said AM radio station--that he depicted....the man who cannot be named as I am not getting in trouble for breaking DISboards rules. They didn't even come close to saying that it was a possibility that he had drawn himself in that man's place. (And thus my disclaimer that I didn't have the back story).

So the OP seems to have some inaccuracies in the first post...

the girl getting suspended was not actually suspended and is allowed to read the bible.

the boy suspended for the picture was not suspended, he was referred based on another drawing, and there was a history of concerning behavior.

That leaves the kid with the long hair...anyone know the true story on that one? ;)

OP just curious where did you get your "facts" you put in your post? Could you provide a link, thanks.

I haven't heard about the kid with the hair, however mine hasn't cut his hair in 3 years, and is still able to attend school, so I guess my parental control is still firmly in place
