Is it just me, or do some of the pictures that get post on DIS drive you nutz?

Some pictures are very good.

But many are not. I see out of foucus shots, some with no subject, blur when not intended, and the rule of thirds is a complete mystery to most.

Part of me wants to say, hey, theat picture is horrid, and you shouldt post it.

Part of me wants to say, that picture is too far away, too close, out of foucus, over exposed....bla bla bla.

It's a rock and a hard place. I dont want to be mean and say someone vacation pictures are bad, but yet, they also need to be given feedback to learn how to be better in the future.

There are times when someone gets a shot of something, and they know it's not good, but the 'idea' was there, or something they still wanted to share. Now if someone asks for an honest opinion.. that's different . There were some castle shots early in the season and people were begging for pics, so there were some then that werent 'good' but it got the point across and calmed the savages for a while

You have to remeber that this site really isn't a photography site, most of the folks that come here are simply people trying to capture their memories to the best of their and their cameras ablity. Most of them have never given a thought to what the camera can or can not do, they just want it to work so they can remember 20 years from now how cute their kid looked with Mickey.

There are some amazing photographers here, and I have learned a ton, but it is because they don't tell people that there is something technically wrong with their photos, that allows others to come here in a low presure enviornment, to share and learn.

in the end, if the person is happy with their picture, and wish to share it with people, then that is all that should really matter.

Some of my most treasured pictures are technically crappy, but I'll never see my son in my mom's arms again, so that picture means the world to me. Crappy lighting, tilted angle, slightly out of focus and everything...

no the pictures do not get on my nerves..I would never flame someone for taking a bad pic on a vacation that they saved and looked forward to. Not everyone has a flair for taking great pictures , myself included, but gee I wouldnt jump them and tell them they had it all wrong.

Gosh... I really hope you wouldn't actually ever say something like that to someone. It's bad enough that you actually "THINK" it. Everyone started off as an amatuer, taking pictures that were no where near professional levels. Heck.... mine aren't even CLOSE to professional levels.

When I see a picture here on the DIS that is one of those "awesome" shots I make a mental note of it, and try to recreate it. That's how we all get better. I don't need someone to tell me my shots aren't perfect, and most of the time I don't need someone to tell me what I did wrong. We get better by practicing and trying to take better pictures, not because we were criticized for the bad ones we did take.

As Master Mason mentioned, this is a Disney related site, not a photography site with an area for critique. That's why I'm a member of Nikonians.org and trust me, I can get all the critique and opinions I can handle over there. However, just ask and you shall receive as there are numerous wonderful photogs around this board willing to lend their knowledge in an expert manner.

We don't want folks to be ashamed of posting any photos of the places we all love to visit. I personally enjoy seeing them as it keeps that part of my brain occupied with happy thoughts.

You would be surprised at what photos sell at youth sports events, all the defects you described and more but to the parents that photo of their child is worth every penny. At times I have even felt bad charging for the prints, but those parents think the image is perfect.

I couldn't imagine saying something like that. Who am I to judge what's worthy of posting? I'd certainly hate to have someone tell me my precisious memories were unworthy of sharing. Sometimes the only shots I have of something important to me have serious technical flaws. Flaws or not, they are still the best shots I have.

When people ask for advice, I try to give it. When they don't, I've learned to keep any negative opinions to myself. When they do, I try to make my criticism constructive.

I can appreciate your desire to help us improve our pictures. However, I don't think that we need to be given feedback. When I post, I'm usually looking for the joy in sharing not a critique. When I want that, I ask.

We have a wide mixture of skill and equipment levels here. Many people are here not to learn better photography but just to share the precisious memories that they've captured. For those that want to improve, they sometimes do that by asking for critiques or asking questions. Many of the more experienced shooters here also try to help others by posting threads providing tips and advice. I think you would help people better in those ways rather than giving unsolicited criticisms, regardless of how constructive or well meaning they are. That's just my opinion, though. I can't speak for all of the other imperfect shooters.

I'm one of those who's posted photos that aren't perfect. That's what I like about this board - amateurs like me can share memories of our vacations and NOT get criticized for all the "technical" aspects that are missing from our photos.

BUT....there are also some folks who post here who are pros with all the fancy equipment and who take absolutely wonderful photos. I have learned so much from seeing their photos that my own photos have improved dramatically. And everyone is free to post a photo and ask "tell me what I did wrong."

If you're looking for serious, technically perfect photos, then I suggest you find another website. IMO, the folks here are sharing memories, not competing for the best photo.

No, these posts dont bother me a bit. All I need to do is look back at photos I took when I was first starting to remind myself what really bad photography looks like. Looking at the recent thread on improved shots over the years, I'm not the only one.

If some of the photos you are referring to were posted to other photo boards, then yeah, I'd question it. But this forum attracts more people for whom photography isn't even a real hobby or interest for them, but capturing their visits to Disney parks is. And that's fine.

I say bring on all comers. Pros, advanced amateurs and yes those who picked up a digital camera before their trip to WDW and want to share their blurry, badly composed shots.

Just another thought. I don't do any post processing on any of my photos that I post for everyone on the DIS. I figure if they are going to "borrow" it they are going to have to do some work. Now what I do for my own use is something different.

I would rather see a photo than someone explaining something.

who cares what someone else posts? some photos might mean something to the poster no matter what anyone else thinks of them...i'm glad lots of people( me included) feel free to post here that probably would never get the nerve to post on a photo site. sometimes to me the sentiment behind the photo is so touching...i remember a thread that was "the photo that meant a lot to you", the photos might not have been "award" winners but that wasn't the point. this is a more friendly "sharing tech tips and memories site" than a "whose better" site imo.. and really these are vacation photos for a lot of us, not entries into some grand photo contest ( although if someone wants to give me a say 40d, i'll take it)

This is a board for everyone to post. This is one of the best places in regards to photography for people to come and learn and have fun in a wonderful environment. I'm sure I've posted some bad photos, but that is not the point of this board.

When you share a passion for Disney and photography, then your going to get all kinds of people with all kinds of photos. Bring them all on. We love them all!

So to answer your question.... yeah, maybe it is just you.

I agree, this site brings together two things that I enjoy. You guys have seen my posts, I'm not spectacular by any means, but I have also learned LOTS from being here. Myself, I can take a hard critique, so I ask for honest opinions. Some may not be as thick skinned as myself though.

Noone else is feeling this way. I can honestly say that I use everyones photos to try to better my own. I have learned so much on here, because people post their pictures withour hesitation. I would much rather see the photos of everyone, because that let's me know that I am not alone when I see the tremendous photos that some post on here. It gives me hope!

I enjoy posting on this site because everyone is so kind and willing to share any knowlege that you may be looking for. Most other sites will rip your photos apart if they aren't pretty much perfect.
