? Is it "illegal" to rent your points ?

I am thinking about renting my points to a friend of mine, whose husband is still in Iraq, but will be home soon. I posed a question to DVC, via email, about renting the points and travel insurance. I wanted to know if I would get my points back ( I would be borrowing form 2011) if something happened with his dates getting back home.

They sent me the nastiest reply telling me they were going to "inform" the board that I was doing something illegal with my points and that I should read my contract. What is up with that????

It is not -- renting is expressly permitted by the terms of our agreement. Accepting $$ for a TRANSFER of points to another member is not permitted (although done quietly all the time), renting is allowed.

I would call them and speak with a supervisor, assuming you have the name of the person who responded to you.

But if you rented them to someone and had to cancel, it would be treated just like if it was you vs. your renter. DVC has nothing to do with the transaction between you and them -- you are responsible for the reservation right up until the end. If you had to cancel, the normal cancellation / holding points / etc. rules apply.

Disney does not allow commercial renting. Depending on how OP worded their question to Disney that could have been what triggered the response. Since neither the question nor the text of the response are posted it's hard to advise IMHO.

DVC currently considers 20 reservations a year as an indication of commercial renting. Or at least that is what they have said. The Public Offering Statement does allow renting a reservation to someone not on your membership.

I'd forward the email to the member satisfaction team. Renting is expressly allowed with limits on extreme cases.

I wanted to address the part bolded above. What do you mean by get the points back?

My understanding is that once you have borrowed the points to rent to someone else (or just to use on your own) you would not get them back if travel plans change. The points would stay in the UY that they were borrowed in to.

Yes true - but you would get them back - as in they're not just "poof" gone - but it follows all the normal rules (so they stay in the year to where you borrowed them into, cancellations less than 30 days go to holding, etc.)

Cancelling a rented reservation would be the same as if you cancelled a stay for yourself. The member retains control of the points until the stay is complete.

I really wish you would send the reply email back to member satisfaction. Regardless of the content of your question I don't think it is acceptable for the response to be nasty.

Obviously since you asked the question straight out you were not trying to do anything illegal (plus as many have answered, renting is legal. Commercial renting is not.). So I'd really like to know what the member satisfaction people respond is when you send them this email.

New CM or not, nasty email is unacceptable.

Just recently someone posted about trying to change name/address on a reservation to reflect the friends that would be staying in the room (instead of the owner) and the CM wouldn't let the dis'er do that. I wonder if they have a "rogue" CM who misunderstood the training that you can actually let other people use your points? I would definitely follow up with MS or QA or whatever group handles these things.

I just did the same thing a few months ago for a friend of mine. She's using them instead of them going to waste because I can't go to Disney again on my timeshare becuase I don't have enough points for my upcoming trip. So I just let her use the remainder for the few days she is going with family.

Yeah, that CM didn't understand the training because I just did this exact thing a few months ago. I put the reservation in my best friend's name because they are using my timeshare in September.

I currently have reservations for my brother & sister-in-law at VGC and for my mother-in-law & sister-in-law at OKW. In the past I have done the same for my parents and cousins. I have never had a problems make reservations in their names.

Agree! Plus, Disney can use the situation as an opportunity to see if they need to make changes to their training to try to prevent similar things happening with future members.

Renting points is not illegal. On the occasions that I have rented out my points, I am very upfront with MS and have never had a problem. I would report the cast member who was nasty with you. Maybe the misunderstood what you were saying but they had absolutely no right to be nasty about it.
