We're driving and staying at Pop Century. We will be park hopping and have early breakfast ADR most days. Is it faster to get around with our own car than taking the buses?

Depends on where you are going but for the most part, a car is faster.

Buy or borrow a recent (last five years or so) issue of The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World. There's a comparison chart in there - your car vs. WDW transportation, shortest-to-longest time range for travel.

Thanks I'll look for that.

I like using the bus service instead of a car. Have a car for early ADRs is good tho.

I'm definitely a rent a car person. I hate depending on Disney Transportation.

Plus I can get off-site to eat. For the cost of one buffet I an feed my family of 4.

One of the things that I love about WDW is that I don't have to drive anywhere. After dealing with extreme traffic (Washington, DC) all year long, I love :lovestruc having one week off.

In one word, Yes.

Especially, if you include your time waiting for the bus.;)

Drive everywhere including the Magic Kingdom! It's faster and more convenient. You're not on anyones schedule but your own.

Yes it's faster. For example if I'm at OKW and want to eat a Cape May at the BC, then I allow 15 minutes. Never a problem. By bus at least an hour (or more).

I use WDW transport when I'm onsite - I do like to have a glass of wine or three wih dinner when on vacation and will not drive even if it was only one glass....but the car is def faster most of the time.
When I stay off site I am 8 min from the parks driving...I'm sure I get there faster than a person who waits for the bus and then travels to other resorts and then the park...
(and when I'm offsite, I have a glass o three when I get back to my resort).

It is faster for everywhere (especially DTD), but not usually for MK.

Perfect case in point. We stayed for fireworks one night. My friend left MK 30 minutes before the fireworks even started! She had to take the monorail or boat over to the parking lot and then get her car and drive back to pop century. She had to wait a while for the boat or monorail as many people were leaving.

We stayed the 1/2 hour and then watched the fireworks, and _then_ left MK and were lucky to get one one of the first busses out (as we watched the fireworks from Main street). My friend in her car beat us to the hotel by only a few minutes, and they had a huge head start.

For us, the car ride to MK is painful as I know how quick the buses can be. For us DTD on buses is the most painful of all, as I know a car can be so much faster. That said, I wouldn't rent a car for WDW when they have a fairly efficient transportation system set up.

We did both last year (drove and used Disney transportation). I agree with the pp's on the difficulties getting in and out of MK. Another thing to keep in mind at DTD is the limited parking -- both times we drove our own vehicle and had to drive around for 10 minutes waiting for a spot to open up. We also saw a fight! That was the 2nd week in June, so a bit busier season. Just an FYI!

For travel to the other parks, we loved having our own car.

I believe so. If you take your car you are on your own scheduel anyway, you dont have to wait for Disney transportation to get anywhere.

We had just the opposite experience at Magic Kingdom last August; waits for the busses to POP at park closing were WELL over 30 minutes! I would have much preferred spending that time hopefully sitting on the monorail, sitting on the tram to the parking lot, and sitting in my rental car, off my feet and in the air conditioning, than standing in the endless queue for the bus back to POP- and then be packed into the busses like sardines, standing the whole way back to the hotel.

SO YES...YES...YES it's faster to have your own car! Easier, cooler, more restful, and more peaceful, too!

We typically stay at the BoardWalk, so from there, it's only AK that the car would be of any benefit.
