Is it ever appropriate for a boss to scream at someone and tell them that an assignment they handed in is crap? My boss (of about 35-40 people) was just yelling at an employee telling that them a story they handed in was crap. Yelling loud enough for all of us to hear what she was yelling about.

I should mention that this is NOT an isolate incident.

No, it is not ok.

My mom had one of her supiroirs ( I know sp is WAY off) do that to her on a consistent basis. She told a higher up after she couldn't take it anymore and that lady was soon fired.

It is never ok to yell at a employee in front of other people.

No. That sounds cruel and I think the employee should go right to your human resources dept. and tell what happened.

That's terrible. If you have something to say to criticize and employees work, you do it calmly, constructively and out of earshot of the rest of your team.

Sometimes if you scream back at them they start to bully someone else. It sounds a little weird, but it works!

Good luck to your coworker! :sunny:

No, it is totally unprofessional.

Sounds like that woman subscribes to the "manage by fear" theory.

If you have an HR person, I would speak to him/her about the problem.

No!!

OT...Lodi! I lived in Lodi as a baby...on Prospect Street. ;)

LOL!

No, it's never appropriate.

Absolutely unprofessional IMO, and very inappropriate! I used to have a boss that would do this, then she would wonder why no one respected her?

Not appropriate at all.

If it were an isolated incident and followed up by a sincere apology by the boss, then I'd have less of a problem with it. But, this sounds like a "management style" for this boss. Bad management style.

NO one deserves that, in front of thier peers,,SO I vote for NO WAY NO HOW!!

TINK

No way no how.

THat happened to my DH once. It was a VP, no less! Not his boss, but his bosses boss!

He went and talked to HR about it. Lo and behold, the VP resigned three weeks later. Coicedence, maybe.. who knows?

I try to live by this little nugget that was taught to me my Plebe year. . .

"Praise in public. Reprimand in private."

Can't go wrong with that!
