Is It Cheaper To Split Your Trip

I see a lot of people staying at 2 different resorts during their long stay and I was wondering if this was a cheaper way to go or if it is just to have the joy of staying at 2 different resorts. And how do you book something like this. I know you can't do it through the dDisney Website but I am assuming it is through the Disney phone reservations. Has anyone done this through AAA too? Sorry about all of the questions but I was just curious.

sometimes splitting a trip can be cheaper, if the rate season changes while you are there. If you arrive during a more expensive season and it changes to a cheaper rate during your stay, the only way to get the cheaper rate is to have separate reservations. And then since you have 2 reservations, maybe you might as well stay at 2 different resorts.
Other times people may just want to try out different places, especially if they are staying for an extended time. This won't necessarily save money, just sort of makes it seem like multiple vacations in one

It can be for either reason. We're staying at Sports on our arrival day because it's the last day before value season starts and I wanted to save some money. We'll check into the WL the next day and get the value season price for the stay. We've also just added a night at the end at Pop because of a flight change to the next day and we wanted to see what Pop was like to compare it to an All Star anyway so we'll get to try out 3 resorts during our stay. You can do it through Disney on the phone or online or use a TA.

We almost always split stays. One reason is that we rent DVc points to stay at OKW or BCV and the points cost less Sun-Thurs. So we add a Fri and Sat on at a moderate or deluxe usually for the first two or last two nights. The other reason is that we might want to try a deluxe like AKL but are not willing to pay for the entire week there. We will either stay half the time at a value or Moderate and then switch to the deluxe (never the deluxe first because that can be a let down!). You can do this online, UNLESS you are doing a package and even then you would not want to split your stay because then you would be paying for 2 seperate packages a days tickets twice. It has always worked best for us to do this when we are paing for everything seperately. Switching resorts has allowed us to try 7 resorts in 4 stays.

I've done split stays twice in the last four months. In January I couldn't decide between WL and AKL, so using an AP code did a split stay, getting a good deal on both. It was like going from the Pacific Northwest to an African savanna in one vacation. I just came back (May 13th-May 22nd) and spent two nights at POP, then five nights at BWV, then two more nights at POP. I originally booked at POP since I would be traveling solo this trip, but the more I looked at it the more I wanted to upgrade, so I rented DVC points for Sun-Thurs nights at BWV, but then when the AP codes came out I decided to add two more nights to my vacation, so wound up with a 2-5-2 configuration. Both resorts were great by the way. Weekend (Fri-Sat) points are about double for DVC, so it makes more sense to pay for those nights at another resort.

With Disney moving your stuff, switching resorts is a breeze. I'm going back in late Sept and again in mid Dec and will probably be doing split stays again.

We're doing it b/c I have to get two rooms and can't afford 2 rooms at AKL for 7 nights, so we're doing 3 nights at POP and then checking into AKL the last day of Value season. Until I read these boards I never would have consdiered it.

I let my Mom pick since it's her first trip to WDW and gave her this choice or a full week at a moderate.. she ate this one right up! And we're keeping the AKL part a secret from my son.
