Is it best to ask for a specific WL area or just hope for one?

Hello,
We are planning to stay at the Wilderness Lodge in November. We are in a standard view room (the cheapest of all WL room options). I don't mind having a view of a parking lot, etc. I just don't want a room that is going to be near noisy things like the Whispering Canyon Cafe or dinging elevators all night.

Do you think it is best to fax in a request or does that just irritate the front desk? Is it better to just show up and be super nice and friendly to the person helping us?

I'm not even sure what I would ask for exactly, except maybe for a quiet room? Or maybe I should just leave it to fate and see what I get?

I think its probably better to ask nicely when checking in .... it worked for us last trip ... we ended up in one of the deluxe rooms :thumbsup2

I always have a room request put in. So I'd ask for a quiet location away from WCC.

What did you say? Did you ask if you could be upgraded or how did you word it exactly? Thanks :-)

It will be 2 days after my 17 year wedding anniversary, so maybe we should mention that?

I did not even ask for an upgrade .... but i did ask for a specific range of room numbers. I worded it something like "I was wondering if it was possible to get a room in the range of 6XXX - 6XXX (dont remember the exact rooms but we ended up with 6123) .... we really loved the view from there the last time we stayed here." I dont think it would hurt to mention the anniversary either.

Did you fax in your request?
No ... we just asked when we got there.

Please note: we checked in early ... 8:00a.m.ish ... the room wasnt ready but i think since it was early it helped us get a better room.

I called and had the request added to my reservation about a week before. I then called back to make sure it was written down and it wasn't and the second person I spoke with was more helpful. We asked for a quiet room high up with an open balcony. We got it!

I have stayed at WL twice. Both times booked the cheapest room and added no notes. Both times I received a complimentary upgrade to a pool view balcony room. I don't know if it is common or if I was lucky, but that's my experience. The first time was April 2006 and the second time was December 2010.

. . . Wilderness Lodge has the highest percentage of upgrades
. . . at least upgrades from "standard" rooms
. . . they reclassified many standard rooms into woods view in 2004/2005
. . . this brought in a ton of new revenue
. . . this makes a smaller number of standard
. . . so, it is easy to overbook standard and have to upgrade to woods or courtyard

Did you fax in your request?
. . . we don't take faxes
. . . except to take them to the trash can
. . . faxes for room requests were stopped in 2005
. . . WL was the first resort to do so
. . . now it has spread to almost all resorts (there are two exceptions)

Thanks everyone. I will plan to just take my chances and keep my standard view room. I am not going to request anything special and will just see what happens. I will add a note to our reservation that it is our wedding anniversary. I'll be thrilled if I get an upgrade, but if not, I'm still staying at the WL, and that is pretty awesome no matter what room I am in :)
