Is George Bush the worst president of the last 50 years?

Is George Bush the worst president of the last 50 years?

  • Easily the worst

  • Worst? How about the best president of all time.

  • Sure, Bush is horrible. But Kerry would easily eclipse Bush's sorry ineptitude.

  • Why don't you take this to the debate board where it belongs.

I would love to get one. Dumber got into Yale on a legacy which is another form of Affirmative Action and the guy can't even speak his native language without chopping up words.

Being the contrarian that I am - here is my 2 cents worth: Bush sure isn't the best BUT after listening to Al Gore's speech the other night, I sure am glad HE isn't the President!!!! Personally, I found it anti-American and an insult to every service person in the Middle East. The man is totally clueless and doesn't give ANY credit to the intelligence of every reasonably informed American.
The speech was just political with human life be damned. OK now I said it! Feel free to flame. It just ticked me off, and despite admiring the man in the past, he just fell right off of my list.

ITA. Gore went off the deep end. THANK GOD he is NOT our President!

What the heck kind of poll is this??? A bit biased, don't you think? I'm thankful every day that Pres Bush was in command on 9/11, and not the alternative. Kerry is a joke and is not respected by our military. The War on Terrorism should be the #1 issue on American minds when they go to the polls in Nov. Bush, hands down.

The worst pres of the last 50 years = Carter.

I suppose it’s kind of funny. The problem for me is lumping Bush Jr. in with his dad.

George Bush Sr. is easily the most underrated president of the last 50 years. His execution of the first Gulf War was brilliant, the statecraft he demonstrated sublime, he oversaw and acted prudently when communism came tumbling down around the world and he bravely maintained the legacy begun by Reagan when he refused to cave into calls to significantly raise federal spending in reaction to a small recession. (This last decision did more to ensure the prosperity of the 1990’s than anything else the government could have done – but it also went a long way in ensuring his defeat in 92.)

I believe that Bush Sr. is one of the best presidents of the last 50 years. Which makes it all the more tragically ironic that his son has turned out to be such a dud.

while i don't agree with every detail that mossman posted, i have to say, i agree. i have a lot of respect for george bush the elder and i think he was a good (if sometimes misguided) president. in terms of being a stesman, he is lightyears ahead of bush 43.

i would never lump the two of them together, excet that when bush 32 got elected, i hoped that at least he might be a little like his dad. unfortunately he is definitely NOT a statesman like his father was.

george bush 43 is the first president in my lifetime that i look at and think "man what a joke" which is actually pretty sad.

I think the honor of worst President in the last 50 years would have to go to President Carter. Great man, lousy POTUS.

I understand you are a teen and therefore your life experiences are limited however... what do YOU think Pres. Bush should be doing about the war on terrorism? Treat it as a law enforcement issue, as Kerry would suggest?

Maybe, just maybe, not pissing off the collective Arab world indiscriminately by fighting a pre-emptive war that has only served to facilitate the expansion of terrorism and sympathy towards al Qaeda's ideologies? Just a thought.

I, for one, am rather hawkish for a bleeding heart liberal when it comes to defending ourselves: I supported the war in Afghanistan (which has been since neglected), and would have probably supported some form of military action in Iraq if the nation was a true threat to our national interests. But in all honesty, we must measure our priorities: Blowing up a few terrorist camps is pointless if it only serves to make anti-Americanism more prevalent in an already hostile region.

I don't agree, mossman, that Bush senior was one of "the best" presidents -- but he was certainly much better than the current President Bush. he was, as you noted, very prudent in the Gulf War. to call him "dumb" is a disservice.

but that label seems to fit the current occupant of the Oval office, to the ocuntry's misfortune.

Where did you ever get the idea that the war in Afghanistan is being neglected? I will never understand this serial mentality some people have with our ablity to fight wars

The collective Arab world is upset with us? When was that poll taken and who was polled?

Who, exactly, is becoming more sympathetic with Al-Queda's ideologies than perhaps other terrorist orgs?

I don't doubt our ability to fight wars: I doubt our ability to keep the pieces together after the fact.

State of Affairs in Afghanistan
1) Afghanistan labeled neglected 'tinderbox'
2) Two Years After, Country's Biggest Woes Neglected

I thought it was fairly apparent that the current state of affairs in Afghanistan is being shaped and defined largely by the militant warlords rather than the interim government. I suggest you look into it.

Interesting.

As for the Afghanistan issue, the one article you linked required registration which I'm am not intersted. Can you tell me if it was an actual news article or an opinion piece.

The second article seemed to deal with post-war economic issues, not the war itself. Were your comments referring to non-combat issues? Cuz seems to me we still get reports of casaulties in Afghanistan. Wierd, given we are supposedly neglecting our goals there.

As for the Pew research, that is indeed interesting. Hardly supports the idea that Islam is a religion of peace, does it? Are you suggesting those four countries represent the whole of the "Arab world"?

I would bet that the polls would look nearly identical even if we had found WMDs.

Indeed. While the poll is interesting, to me it doesn't suggest that the "Arab world" had changed their opinons of us based on the Iraq war. From the link:

In the predominantly Muslim countries surveyed, anger toward the United States remains pervasive, although the level of hatred has eased somewhat and support for the war on terrorism has inched up

the word "remains" would appear to suggest a pre-existing opinion.

Despite that small piece of common ground, however, there is still considerable hostility toward the U.S. in the Muslim countries surveyed.

"still" another word suggesting a pre-existing opinion.

It would be nice to see a "before and after" survey. Like you suggest, I would imagine the numbers would not be all that dramatically different

Other interesting data from the report:

The adage that people in other nations may dislike America, but nonetheless want to move there is borne out in Russia, Turkey and Morocco. Roughly half of the respondents in those three countries say people who have moved to the U.S. have a better life.

But one of the largest gaps between Americans and Europeans concerns the question of whether people who move to the U.S. have a better life. Americans overwhelmingly believe this to be the case – 88% say people who move to the U.S. from other countries have a better life. By contrast, just 14% of Germans, 24% of French and 41% of British think that people who have moved to the U.S. from their countries have a better life.

France and Germany. I'm shocked! Shocked, I tell you! :smooth:
