Is Flight of the Hippogriff anything like Big Thunder Mountain?

My DS (soon to be 9) is a big fan of Big Thunder Mountain at WDW, but it took him awhile to work up the courage to ride it. He also enjoys Splash Mountain and Primeval Whirl, but he wants nothing to do with Expedition Everest, Space Mountain or the Rock n Roller Coaster

Right now, he's experiencing pre-trip ride anxiety, grilling me about some of the rides at Universal. Since I've never been, I know nothing except for the brief glimpses I've seen on YouTube (And even then I don't watch the full videos because I want the rides to be a surprise).

He keeps asking me if the Flight of the Hippogriff is anything like Big Thunder Mountain or Goofy's Barnstormer. Is it? Thank you so much for anything you can tell me. :goodvibes

Yes it is, but it is shorter in duration. It is definitely a family coaster. You are going to see the entire coaster when you walk up to it. It is very compact. Looking at a youtube video won't be spoiling anything

Thank you (And my son thanks you, too)! I'm off to check YouTube now. :)

If he loves BTMRR, then he should have no problems with either Flight of the Hippogriff at IoA or Woody Woodpecker's Nuthouse Coaster over at the Studios.

A very similar Disney ride would be the currently-closed Goofy's Barnstormer, which I just remembered you mentioned. Doh!

I have been on both. He will have no problem. Much more like Goofy's rollercoaster than Big Thunder Mt. Have fun. DS will be riding it in April. He is almost 8. He loves Big Thunder Mt. He wants to do Space Mt. but will have to settle for Flight of the hippogriff and Woody Woodpecker this time around.

agreed just like the barnstormer It has some great theming around it too. Be sure to bow to the hippogriff

Thanks for the heads-up about Woody Woodpecker's coaster! :)
I thought I had a better picture of the coaster but this is all I have. :(

Your son should do fine on the Flight of the Hippogriff. Like others have said the coaster is very compact so he will be able to see it before he even decides to get on it. It's not very long and isn't to crazy.

Have fun. The park is amazing :)

Thank you! We're very excited! :goodvibes

He should have no problem. They are really awesome family coasters.

Interesting bit of trivia: Woody Wood Pecker is actually a mirror image of Barnstormer.

I was all prepared to doubt you.

But then I did a quick check on YouTube comparing the two and I believe you're right. Very interesting! Learn something new every day....

That just gave me chills! I know ... I'm a big nerd. I think I'm more excited for the WWoHP than the kids are!

If you are a Potter nerd then you will love this park section. I literally could have sat there for days sipping butterbeer and looking at all the theming around.

Be sure to use the restrooms when the crowds are lower (early am or late) you can hear moaning myrtle's voice. ;)

I thought the Hippogriff was a rip-off. The ride lasted all of 30 seconds and was not nearly as fun as BTMRR.

It's not SUPPOSED to be like BTMRR. It's a kiddie coaster.

So cool, all the people who can't see beyond WDW won't crowd up WWOHP for those of us who love it!

I stated those same sentiments on a thread a month or so ago. Perfect!

I just had a sense of belonging and contentment doing just that. Unlike running around like a chicken with my head cut off at MK.

I liked Epcot for the same reasons.

I didn't say I didn't love US/IOA. We are going there, along with WDW in August. I enjoyed FJ and the theming of the WWOHP; I just didn't think the Hippogriff was any fun. The OP was asking if the ride was like BTMRR and it definitely isn't.
