Hi All,

After my last post I've done a lot of calculations but there are still a few questions I have,

We've realised we can get 150 points at AKL resale for the same as direct 150 points at OKW.

However I know we no longer get a members card. Will we still get free parking at resorts? (new car parking for resort guests) We will be purchasing a platinum AP so discounts don't worry us and neither park parking costs.

What are the restrictions buying resale? Its not really published anywhere online. We won't be attending the events at disney due to being in the UK.

TIA

Parking is part of membership dues, so you will get free parking at the resorts even if you buy resale.

Resale buyers cannot take part in the after hours parks events or take advantage of any DVC dining/merchandise/AP discounts, but as you said, that doesn't make a difference for you.

Also resale points cannot be used to book Disney Collection options (DCL, Adventures by Disney, non-DVC Disney resorts). But most people will agree those are generally bad use of points any way. As a resale buyer you can still access the RCI collection.

I think extremely few people are going to be able to make the case for 75 pts retail for DVC, much less 150. The first question is whether buying DVC makes sense, to me that's value staying on property enough to pay extra, pay cash and use points ONLY at DVC. One could buy OKW resale, even 2057. SSR, OKW 2057 and AKV should be all similar in cost resale. To justify the retail 75 points one would have to buy a boatload of passes over the next few years since it's not a guaranteed program.

Do you care about where you are going to stay or do you just want to save money? Aren't other resorts less expensive than the DVC? If you care and you have reasons to buy DVC, you should buy where you love to stay due to availability issues booking at 7 months.

We have priced up all stars as package (best option for UK at present) and DVC always comes out cheaper over 10 years at least. Plus we want to do the DVC route as its getting more expensive each year. We've just stayed at Yacht Club and love the deluxe resorts!

I'm not sure how you did the numbers. Make sure you're including the pass discounts on the cash side and having to pay extra for the passes on the DVC side. Also don't forget to figure dues increases and the earnings on up front costs as well as the increases in packages over time as well. Compare to DVC resale and don't count too much on specialty room options that are cheaper like AKV value or BLT/BWV standard.

Finances are my strong point thank fully and looking at the % increase in DVC over % increase on disney resorts. Working out I'd save around £450 a year at least after 5 years. We won't be financing it I don't expect as its only £12450 including the initial costs.

What are you comparing to, the hotel packages vs DVC resale? Most in this situation make overly optimistic assumptions. A BIG mistake often made is comparing to DVC directly prices which is a very poor comparison. The best comparisons are what you would have spent on cash discounted (I usually use 20% but you may want a different number based on UP promotions) or renting privately which is likely the best comparison.

I've compared Resale Vs Package Vs Private renting villas Vs renting dvc points.
We've looked at the saving costs of buying DVC membership and getting AP discounts in which AP will still entitle certain discounts. We are looking at resale over direct as there aren't enough benefits purchasing directly.

Good luck and enjoy.

I think 150 points at AKV resale would be a good place for you to start.

We love AKV, it’s a very nicely themed resort. I think that the points will hold their value well over time so that if it doesn’t work for you long term, it won’t be difficult to move on.

And it doesn’t sound like it’s really worth it for you to buy direct just for perks. I agree that 75 points direct vs resale is a hard sale for perks. I’d recommend them only if you needed the AP discount and could routinely take advantage of moonlight magic, etc. Otherwise, I wouldn’t fall for the ‘spend thousands to feel just a little more special’ routine.

With a 150 point contract, you’ll get your feet wet and in a few years of use, if you want to go another route, you’ll be much more knowledgeable about how, where, and why.

Thank you for the reply, thats exactly how I've been feeling with the discount of AP is that maybe over 15 years it would even out but it will take a long time to make it worth it, I know with 150 points we can do our 2 weeks vacation comfortably at the times of the year we usually go.

Its definitely a huge decision to decide the most sensible route to go down but looking over the years and the price increase its getting more expensive

And there’s no guarantee the program will be around that long, it’s a big gamble to break even at best if perks/discounts are the focus.
