Is DVC good for me?

We figure we will be making at least 1-2 trips a year. We bought a 50 point resale contract which gives us a 4 - 5 day stay in early-mid December in a studio at a Disney deluxe resort. We figured as long as we have one trip a year to stay in an uber nice place it is well worth it. The other trips we may make during the year can reserve us an All-Star or moderate resort.

It is all a personal preference

I used to think studios were fine but after having a 2BR for three of us I cannot imagine anything lower than a 1 BR :rotfl:

Geez I am warped!!!

Then I am warped too! Can't imagine the 4 of us in anything less than a 2br. The ability for the 2 boys to split up during the downtime is great(especially when they argue about the tv!) :headache:

O.K you warped people!:rotfl: I have to work my way up to that! There is only three of us and we just stay in a studio as of yet! I know once I stay in anything bigger, I know I won't want to go back!:lmao: If we stay in a studio, we can stay way longer!

A note to the original poster.....I thought the moderates were just fine for us. Matter of fact, we really love POFQ! We rented from an owner a couple of years ago and that was all it took! We found out that we really only want to stay at the deluxe resorts now. :rotfl2:

Well I blame DVC! We rented a studio at HHI and got a 2BR - now after spreading out we love the extras...sad thing is we were FINE in a studio but now I am sad...

oh well that just means MORE POINTS!

I know! I think they must put something in the water! Or maybe, they filter something into the airconditioning system that makes you want to Buy! Buy! Buy! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Ya all are SPOILED!! ;0)

How long do you stay in your rooms, studios, luxury suites...ect...?

We stop in our room to sleep and shower.

Then we are off to spend money!! :cool1:

Think of all the "stuff" you can do and or buy with that money! :cloud9:

So they say I can get 150 to 175 points for $16,000.00???

How many trips is that going to get me?

Right now with a family of 4 we can take 3 trip for 7 days each with 16,000.00 including flight, food, and fun money.

Im not saying its a bad deal for staying at a delux resort if that what you really want. Im still thinking on it. I still do not know all the details or how the points work. They are sending everything to me. I just dont know if DH will go for it.

Do you ever go anywhere else? Using DVC? They say you can go all over the world even Disney Paris ( I wanna go there!)

Only 3 trips? I'm guessing there's a typo there somewhere. Surely it doesn't cost you 5,300 dollars per trip???

Its close.

Flight $1200.

room
hoppers
waterpark $1938.

Dining plan $770.

to and from airports $200.
(now ME in Orl only)

taxis to goto store
or sick of waiting for bus
at the end of the day
or to make it to Ressie
at another resort $200.

still have to buy souvinears, tips, more drinks, pay to have pic burned, if we get a room code (yes they have let us use it with a package) we might add 3 more days and stay 10. Thats at least 2 meals a day for 3 days.

If we do get the 3 extra days we rent a car for 2 days. Hit Daytona and outlet shop. Car rental $200.00

So yeah about 5,000.00

We don't hang out inside all day, but it is great to have nice accomodations when we are there! After staying in a "not so nice hotel" around DL a couple of X-mas' ago, we learned our lesson. The weather was horrible! It was practically monsooning out and our son was sick and didn't feel like going to the park, so we got stuck staying in that "yucky" room all day! My husband said, "Never again!" We have only stayed in a studio and we like that! We also live across the US from WDW, so when we go we like to stay for a while.
If we lived closer, we would probably go more often. We usually stay at WDW 10-12 days.

As for going anywhere else, we like Florida! There is so much to do there! We do WDW and then we go other places like St. Augustine where our friends live. They have taken us spring hopping and that is really fun! We plan on doing a lot more of that! Florida has so many natural springs and they are crystal clear and beautiful! Last time we went to Florida, we went to the Gulf Coast! Gorgeous!! This summer we will be hitting the Keys in the middle of our trip. We also do Universal sometimes. We haven't even made it to the Space Center yet! There is just so much to do in Florida, besides WDW! Don't get me wrong now, we love WDW too! I guess we are Disney people! It is always our happy place!

We have been going to Disney for the last several years and before we bought DVC, we all discussed it and decided it was probably somewhere we would always want to go. We also liked the option of banking our points or renting them out, if we decided that we wanted to go somewhere else one year.

Sorry to ramble!:rolleyes1

First off, I have to agree that we are quite spoiled! :thumbsup2

I think that you are thinking of DVC merely in terms of accommodations and costs. As I indicated earlier on the thread, I don't think DVC will be saving you money vs your current method of staying on-site.

However, DVC is more than just a way to get a room. It is an upgrade in vacation accommodations, especially if you get a 1BR or larger unit. So yes, we do spend more time at our villa because we refuse to run around commando style on vacation anymore.

We rarely get to the parks before 10:30 in the morning, and enjoy relaxing at the villa in our off hours.

I just don't think DVC is for you if you are having trouble deciding whether upgraded accommodations are worth it or not. My recommendation would be to rent points for a stay at a DVC resort and see if you think it's worth buying into. Good luck with the decision process! :)

We're currently considering DVC. I hear ya on the All Stars. We're not fussy either really and had a ball at the All Stars.

When I calculate how much DVC would cost over its lifetime by adding the initial cost of the points, the maintenance fees on each point annually plus the interest on a loan to finance it and compare that to a family trip to WDW every second year staying at a Disney resort, it probably works out that there's a minimal saving on paper.

But the reasons I'm looking into DVC are:
1) Pre-paid vacations: We are not the type of people who can save for years to achieve something. I wish we were. But the fact is that if I, lets say, want a holiday every 2 years for the next twenty years, each time it comes time to gather money for it I'll have a tough time making a savings plan or sticking to it so each individual holiday will have that nightmare of wondering where the money is coming from. But with DVC, at the very least, I know that once the annual dues are paid, my accommodation is covered. Then I only have to come up with the money for flights, park passes and spending. :lmao: But seriously do you know what I'm saying? DVC would discipline me and take the hassle out of 15 or 20 different budgeting sagas every time we go.

2) Inflation: Whilst the annual dues do increase with inflation, the actual amount of points required per night doesn't (or rarely) changes so, for example, if you pay 100 per point now in 2007, well in 2027 you still have those 100 dollar points but by then the All Star rooms will probably cost around 250 dollars per night or so.

3) Family size: There are 5 of us. We stayed in Wilderness Lodge and Port Orleans when my youngest was one. We stayed in Boardwalk Villas (renting points) and All Stars when she was 2. Now that she's 3 our options for Disney rooms are seriously restricted. There's no way we could do one room for all 5 of us anyway as she gets older. Port Orleans Riverside offer a trundle and will accommodate 5 but privacy is also an issue and I can't imagine us and our 2 (soon to be) teenage boys and our girl all sleeping in 1 room. So next possibility is 2 value rooms or an All Star Music suite costing approx 200 dollars per night (often much more). Now we're getting into a weekly cost of 1400 dollars so DVC is starting to look more appealing!! At the new AKV DVC resort, you can get a 1 bedroom villa which sleeps 5 for 25 points a night (week nights) in the summer time. That seems like great value to me, considering you will get a square footage of approx 3 Disney value resort rooms, it would give us privacy, a *full* kitchen to save lots of money on food (and we really did save a lot of money cooking ourselves at The Boardwalk), full laundry facilities in the room (meaning we lug a lot less across the atlantic!) and beautiful, luxury accommodations! :cloud9: So can you see how our family size has now made the Disney value or moderate rates not so appealing?

4) Beautiful accommodation: Honestly, just being in Disney World is a dream come true for us. It's far from luxury I was reared and All Star Music was beautiful. Spotless. Great fun. Wonderful service. So I feel bad even putting a *but* in here. It's just that we fell in love with The Boardwalk - the atmosphere, the theming and, most of all, the fact that we could walk to two theme parks. Now there is no way in hell that we could ever, ever, ever pay rack rates for a 1 bed villa at The Boardwalk so DVC would give us the opportunity to stay there, not cheaply but certainly a hell of a lot more affordable than 400 or 500 dollars per night. So whilst the All Stars are absolutely great, the extras at places like BWV are out of this world.

5) Weekend points: The number of points required for Fri & Sat nights in a DVC resort are scary but for us (and this is such an individual thing) we will always go for two weeks and spend a couple of nights on the coast and probably a couple of nights at Universal. We may as well choose Fridays and Saturdays for doing that so we save weekly points by staying only weeks nights at DVC. Even if we don't join DVC, we'd be doing those things anyway so it makes DVC more affordable again.

Good luck deciding.

Except for the last point, we chose to buy in to DVC for the exact same reasons as you. We are a family of 5, and we generally go to WDW every 18 months to 2 years, and we usually stay at a moderate and occasionally, a value resort. With just the 2 kids, the mods & values were PERFECT for us. Even now, since the kids are small (DD6, DD3 & DS<1), the standard moderate or value rooms are OK. But once the kids get a little older, we will need to find larger, more expensive accommodations. DVC will allow us to get those larger accommodations at roughly the same cost as what we are paying now. To be honest with you, I don't think I'd be able to afford $250-400/night for a room, so our trips to WDW will become less & less frequent. So I'm looking at DVC almost as WDW vacation insurance. :) It will probably allow us to go even more frequently than what we do now.

Another point that made me decide to buy in was that with 3 small kids, we need to set a slower pace to our WDW vacations. That means less days in the parks & more days around the resort. And although Disney does a nice job with the values & moderates, I think we will enjoy our "off days" a lot more in the DVC resorts.

So I guess that what I am trying to say to the OP is that even though DVC might not save you money in your current situation, there is a very good chance that it will if your vacation needs change.
