I heard DL is only like 50 miles from the fire and its moving fast. How safe is DL? Is it closed?

DL is pretty far from any of the fires. We got alot of smoke and ashes over the weekend, but today was better. DL didn't close.

I have not heard anything about the fires threatening Disneyland. I have heard that with the high winds fantasmic was cancelled in the middle of the performance over the weekend.

jordanyosh, Please keep posting the conditions on a daily basis because we are flying in on Sun. I want to know that it is safe to fly into John Wayne airport and to know that we wouldn't get stranded there. Just a little scared. Thanks again , Pam

<font color=navy>The fires are in the mountains & hilly areas to the east and north of the Los Angeles/Orange County areas, and nowhere near Disneyland itself. John Wayne airport is between Disneyland and the ocean, so there is no danger there, either.

The problems they were having with the planes coming in stemmed from a control tower (in another place) going down (not burned), and this affected the flights coming in, and since LAX is sooo busy, this really affected them adversely. John Wayne and Ontario have been affected, but nothing like LAX, and I think there were no cancellations, but some delays.

The worse happening in Anaheim right now is the smell of smoke, and it really isn't due too much to the proximity of the fire, but more to the enormity of the fire, and even more, the direction of the wind.

Starting tomorrow, and surely by Thursday, they're expecting the direction of the wind to shift back to normal, (as opposed to the current Santa Ana condition), which means that the breeze will come off of the ocean, and push the air east, which should clear the air in Anaheim.

The areas hit hard here are the San Bernardino Mountains (to the east), Simi Valley (to the north), Julian (between Los Angeles & San Diego - but inland), another area east of San Diego, and other areas here & there.

SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT...UPDATE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN DIEGO CA
645 PM PST TUE OCT 28 2003

...BIG CHANGES IN THE WEATHER COMING TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA...

AFTER SEVERAL DAYS OF OFFSHORE FLOW AND SANTA ANA WINDS...SOUTHERN
CALIFORNIA WEATHER WILL UNDERGO A MAJOR TRANSITION WEDNESDAY AND
THURSDAY AS A LARGE TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE MOVES DOWN THE COAST.
THE FOLLOWING IS A SUMMARY OF EXPECTED CONDITIONS.

...TONIGHT...
TONIGHT WINDS WILL BE LIGHT BUT VARIABLE IN DIRECTION. THE NOCTURNAL
STABILIZING NATURE OF THE ATMOSPHERE AND EAST FLOW ALOFT WILL
CONTINUE THE DENSE SMOKE IN COASTAL AND VALLEY AREAS. DUE TO A
COASTAL EDDY AND INCREASING HUMIDITY WHILE WILL BEGIN TO DEVELOP A
MARINE LAYER AT THE COAST...DENSE FOG WILL DEVELOP THERE. DUE TO THE
SMOKE PARTICLES ACTING EFFECTIVELY AS CLOUD SEEDERS...VISIBILITIES
WILL LOCALLY FALL TO NEAR ZERO. LOW TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN THE MID
40S IN THE INLAND VALLEYS TO NEAR 60 AT THE COAST.

...WEDNESDAY...
A LARGE AND DEEP TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE MOVES SOUTHWARD OUT OF
WESTERN CANADA DOWN THE COAST INTO CALIFORNIA. THIS SYSTEM IS RATHER
DRY SINCE IT ORIGINATES OVER LAND...AND NO PRECIPITATION IS
EXPECTED. IT WILL BRING STRONG WINDS FROM THE SOUTHWEST OR WEST.
WINDS WILL BE STRONGEST AT HIGHER ELEVATIONS IN THE MOUNTAINS AND
FOOTHILLS...INCREASING TO 20 TO 30 MPH BY WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. WIND
ADVISORIES MAY BE NEEDED FOR THIS AREA. WINDS IN THE COASTAL AND
INLAND AREAS WILL BE 10 TO 20 MPH. SMOKE WILL BE TURNED EASTWARD AT
ALL LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE AND THE MORE POPULATED AREAS WILL HAVE
LESS SMOKE. HOWEVER...THE DESERTS WILL SEE SIGNIFICANT INCREASES IN
THE SMOKE. TEMPERATURES WILL DECREASE...WITH HIGHS IN THE 70S TO MID
80S IN COASTAL AND VALLEY AREAS AND HIGHS IN THE 70S IN THE
MOUNTAINS.

...WEDNESDAY NIGHT...
HIGHER RELATIVE HUMIDITY WILL PENETRATE FARTHER INLAND BECAUSE THE
MOIST AIR IN THE MARINE LAYER WILL BEGIN TO DEEPEN...POSSIBLY UP TO
3000 FEET BY SUNRISE THURSDAY. WINDS WILL DECREASE OVERNIGHT...BUT
ONLY SLIGHTLY. WINDS IN COASTAL AND VALLEY AREAS WILL BE WESTERLY
LESS THAN 10 MPH. WINDS IN THE FOOTHILL AND MOUNTAIN AREAS WILL BE
AROUND 10 TO 20 MPH. TEMPERATURES WILL DROP INTO THE 50S IN MOST
AREAS...BUT DOWN TO THE MID 40S IN INTERIOR VALLEYS.

...THURSDAY...
THE MARINE LAYER WILL CONTINUE TO DEEPEN AND BRING HIGHER RELATIVE
HUMIDITIES TO HIGHER ELEVATIONS FARTHER INLAND. BY MIDDAY THE DEPTH
OF THE MARINE LAYER WILL BE NEARLY 5000 FEET. SKIES WILL BE MOSTLY
CLOUDY TO PARTLY CLOUDY. WINDS FROM THE WEST WILL INCREASE DURING
THE MORNING. WINDS IN THE FOOTHILLS AND MOUNTAINS WILL BE 20 TO 30
MPH WITH GUSTS TO 40 MPH OR HIGHER. WINDS IN THE COASTAL AND VALLEY
AREAS WILL BE 10 TO 20 MPH WITH GUSTS TO AROUND 25 MPH. HIGH
TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN THE UPPER 60S AND 70S IN THE COASTAL AND
VALLEY AREAS...AND MAINLY IN THE 60S IN THE MOUNTAINS.

...THURSDAY NIGHT...
COASTAL CLOUDS WILL FILL THE COASTAL BASIN WEST OF THE MOUNTAINS AND
PROBABLY EXTEND ALL THE WAY TO THE MOUNTAIN CRESTS. WITH SUCH A DEEP
MOIST LAYER...DRIZZLE IS POSSIBLE.

We just got back.

Sunday there were ashes blowing about and a distinct smoky smell. The were quite a few people wearing masks or bandanas covering their nose and mouth. We were using alot of eyedrops for comfort.

No sky to be seen on Monday, due to high clouds of smoke. We could see a few stars at night.

oday at Disneyland, the blue sky was there, but Driving back on I 5 South, the smoke got thick, and I 5 was clsoed for a few hours in both directions (we made it through in the nick of time)
