Is DDP just flawed?

The old Deluxe plan was the best for us when DD was under 10. We would have TS daily and order the more expensive entrees anyway, so it was a win for us. Now we have to consider DD who eats small portions and prefers fast food, and don't do as many of the more expensive character meals. Also, we don't enjoy as much of the TS as we used to, so we leave the Disney bubble and go off property.

I typically use my credit card points to pay for half or more of the DDP. With 4 adults that enjoy a cocktail with a meal, it works for us. Also my husband won’t stare at prices the whole trip . 🤷‍♀️

You're the type of family that the dining plan works for. If you're going to have a cocktail with every meal, it's much easier to break even. And if you've got a price watcher in the group, it's also a huge benefit to have the dining plan. A friend of mine went to Disney several years ago and it was her husband's first trip there. He had no idea how much the food was going to cost. They were there with their 2 kids and thankfully they were both pre-school age and were more than content with the kids meals (so am I some days :D). Her husband had a total meltdown over the cost of food and would often skip a meal or just order a sandwich (not a combo meal) to save money. And then of course, he was cranky all the time because he was hungry. So in order to get him to go on another trip, she told him she'd book the dining plan so that all of their food was covered and they'd just have to pay a tip at the TS restaurants. He was fine with that. She kept track of what their meals would have cost without the plan and they ended up losing a few hundred dollars by doing the dining plan. But it was totally worth it to her because her husband never stressed about the cost. Thankfully he never knew that they lost money on the deal or he would have had a huge meltdown over that.

Our family only does one or two TS meals on a trip (if that) so we'd never be able to get our money's worth out of the DDP. We just don't want to plan our days around where we're going to eat and we have far better restaurants at home. We've done the free QSDP on 2 trips, but only after doing the math and making sure that the "free" DP was going to save us more money than the package discount on that trip. It did save us a little more money because we were traveling with our 5 kids (most of them were teens/young adults for those trips), but I also needed to make sure we were using those credits for the most expensive meals. It was a bit annoying to keep track of that and I won't do it again. It just wasn't worth the effort to make sure it was the better deal. I'll forfeit the extra $100 (less than 1% of the cost of the trip) and take the room discount instead to avoid the stress. :D I do totally understand how a family in your situation can come out ahead by using the DDP, though.

Disney knows that 95% of the people who buy/get the dining plans will lose money on them. That's why they offer them.

Probably the closest thing to all inclusive and Disney is a Disney Cruise.
I used the Dining Plan for a 1 day stay at All Stars ahead of switching to AKL. My dining costs definitely exceeded what I paid for 1 night of Dining Plan but I went out of my way to beat the plan by going to DS and getting the ribs at Polite Pig with an alcoholic drink, dinner at Boma w Alcoholic Drink when I switched hotels, snack was $9 at F&G Japan booth plus I was able to use refillable mug for rest of the week.

However probably wouldn’t want it for a longer stay.

Disney did offer a Deluxe Dining Plan up until 5 years ago, which covered 3 meals and 2 snacks per day. That still required some counting, because Signature restaurants counted as 2 "meals," but not as much as the current Dining Plan. If Disney thinks they can make money on a plan like that, it may return.

Guaranteed last-minute reservations would be more difficult, because if a restaurant is full, it's full.

I do not like having "2-credit" restaurants, because it looks like prices at those restaurants are increased to justify making them cost more credits. However, if all restaurants are a single credit, the more expensive and unique items will simply disappear.

My family stopped getting the Dining Plan when our kids became Disney Adults, because the mostly-vegetarian meals we eat typically cost less than the price of the plan and we went to fewer character meals. It's clearly not for everyone. It doesn't bother me that it's not ideal, though, since it is clearly optional and (other than my complaint about 2-credit meals) it doesn't affect me if some families choose to use it.
When we went using the dining plan, I felt a little pressured to maximize the value by eating one of the most expensive entrees and of course always getting a dessert, and that’s just not how I eat. So sure, you can work hard to get the value out of it, but I’d rather eat what I like without thinking about that.

In its current form, the dining plan would never work for us. DH doesn’t drink and I rarely do, so the inclusion of alcohol makes it so we can never come out ahead. We also are not big dessert people, sometimes like apps, and often will choose the cheaper entree. I guess I just like more flexibility, especially on vacation.

Curious, what mostly vegetarian meals do you recommend the most? I’ve been to Disney dozens of times, but now we’re moving to mostly meat free. My husband would commit to completely meat free in an ideal situation.

I can help a little bit… I am by far not meat free but will order the vegetarian options here and there at CS. The best one I recall was the Gyro at SSR. I will order salads that are very good but add meat. TS if you eat seafood you will have plenty of options but look at the menus to decide or a dedicated like coral reef in EPCOT a few in DS. No fish…. It is limited to Salads and sometimes uncreative…. Vegan BYO some days at minimum.

Thank you. Every bit of information helps. I’ll gladly take it all.

While I can't recommend specific vegetarian meals -- mostly because I can't remember what I ordered on our last trip *and* I'm not strictly vegetarian; but our adult son has been vegetarian for 15 years and he has no trouble finding vegetarian meals at any restaurant at Disney (though he eats at mostly QS restaurants). When he first started eating only vegetarian, he had some challenges at Disney. He ate a lot of salads (the CM would pick the chicken off of the previous made salads) and grilled cheese. He also found that every QS restaurant he asked had some sort of vegetarian burger available (either a black bean burger or an actual veggie burger) even if it wasn't listed on the menu. Over the years, things have changed and now there are usually a few plant based options on the QS menus outside of the standard grilled cheese and salad. :) I always stop at Capt. Cooks at the Poly for a Super Food salad. I know I had an Asian noodle dish somewhere that was good (might have also been at Capt. Cooks).

I loved the deluxe dining plan when it was offered. Able to eat much as we did at home, meals already paid for and mostly easy to get reservations. I felt the price was reasonable given the quality of the food.

Now the plan is no more so I lower food costs by using discounted gift cards to pay for meals on shorter stays and book a DVC with full kitchen for longer stays.
I wish I could give you advice about character meals @sethschroeder but that was an eatery style we never used. When kids wanted to visit characters we’d check the parks for free meets; much easier for us to schedule.

Have fun on your next trip!

Are you pescatarians, vegans or vegetarians- in training?
Not much help for vegans what with the dairy proscription but fish eaters have lots of choices as do vegetarians at WDW.

We decided on trying possibly 1 or 2 character meals during our long stay this summer (we have never been to one over the years).

Good tips on saving money. We are DVC and stay 2BR normally so we do a little bit there and I could see bigger families saving a good amount of money on their trip if they wanted/needed to.

Normally we charge to the room then buy GC from Target at 5% off when we need them to pay off the room charges.

In the end paying more, still having to make choices between restaurants, and still having to tip is really a turn off when I ran the numbers. So we will go with our normal process and I will just try to pay less attention to the total costs of the meals haha (price watcher as someone else brought up).
