Is Coronavirus affecting your travel plans?

i'm in Israel, the health ministry here tonight finally pulled the trigger and instituted mandatory 14 day home-quarantine for all travelers returning from ANY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD (including the USA).
Before tonight, there was a long list of countries from which returning travelers had to self-quarantine. But as of this evening, it's now every traveler returning from any country must stay at home for 14 days.

Have to say i'm happy about it. Every doctor i know has said this should have been done from day one.
The problem with covid19 is the stress that it puts on the medical system, as shown in Italy.
We're trying to delay that from happening as long as possible, though every expert here believes that containment is only possible for a short time.
.

Two countries in very different places in their outbreak. Too early to determine how the responses will differ. Do you remember where Italy was 2 weeks ago? Starting to think they might have a problem...
Exactly. So why not jump on this hard and try to avoid getting to where Italy is? Do whatever it takes and do it sooner rather than later. No one want to be inconvenienced or to change their behaviour. I say ground the planes. Let’s slow this virus’ spread.

I'm in the DMV and there are no confirmed cases here. I'm honestly kinda shocked!

100% agree. The biggest issue is people only reacting when things get really out of control. They may already be, who even knows with the lack of testing.

You wanna hear a story of extremely bad luck? I just finished three months of weekly chemo, had three surgeries since July and a 6 day hospital stay due to complications from chemo. We haven't been able to travel since last Spring. All I want to do is go to Spring Training and Disney. We have made this trip extra special with a cabana at the water park, and Victoria and Alberts.

GUESS WHEN I AM SUPPOSED TO LEAVE??? TOMORROW!

Right now we are still going for the Spring Training part and we will see about WDW. We are supposed to arrive there on Saturday. I am going to be so so sad if we dont get to go.
Congratulations on your progress; my heart goes out to you for what you have endured. I understand, especially in your circumstances, the strong desire to get out and live it up a little after such an ordeal.

Our circumstances don’t compare but we just cancelled an epic trip with a cruise to celebrate our 25th Anniversary, which we’d spent 2 years planning and saving for. We decided yesterday to book a last-minute package to an AI in Mexico and we leave on Friday. Our thinking is that going and getting back sooner, rather than later, mitigates risk as much as possible since the virus is still not super-widespread and as of this moment, no bans have been imposed on this type of travel (at least not here). It is now dawning on all of us that this situation is rapidly evolving and within weeks the entire world could be on lock-down.

Whatever you do should of course be decided first based on the risks to your health. I wish you well. :flower3:

I feel like this type of measure is on its way in many countries. Whether or not it’s an over-reaction is too soon to tell but it is undeniable that the first cases everywhere are travel-related. We are travelling immediately under circumstances that we believe are as low-risk as possible. I believe there will come a point, perhaps very soon, that such things will be sharply restricted, and for how long is anybody’s guess.

Well here in the UK they are hoping we all catch it this summer so we don't block up the health system next winter!!!! GOD save the Queen 😖😫😓

Wow! That is the kind of thing that governments would say. Never mind the fact that we could have a vaccine by then, or that getting this once could actually make your body react worse when/if you get it a second time as is the case with some viruses.

Science says we should be doing everything that we can to slow its progress. Governments have other agendas.

I think this (from the article you linked) is the scariest thing I've read so far:

Jason Van Schoor@jasonvanschoor

"5/ Patients above 65 or younger with comorbidities are not even assessed by ITU, I am not saying not tubed, I’m saying not assessed and no ITU staff attends when they arrest. Staff are working as much as they can but they are starting to get sick and are emotionally overwhelmed."

Please read and pass on! That is the type of information most people do not understand because the US government is not telling its citizens! Why? because it would cause panic! If they did make it known that if you do fall ill there might not resources to help you. Hearing that might make people make better decisions. People don't think it can happen in the US ("we're not a third world country, we have a good medical system"). A system overwhelmed can only do so much. Slowing the spread it is our best chance at better survival rates. We need to change behaviors/travel/cancel large events NOW before its too late!

I read so many conflicting things. If this is just a mild flu for most, why would there be a shortage of medical resources? I have never gone to the hospital when I have had the flu, not even when I think I caught H1N1 in 2009.

I'm not saying the coronavirus isn't dangerous or compare to anything else cause those conversations alway snowball.

I think when this is all said and done that the panic will have been worse than the disease for majority of the world.

You don't think people are already panicking? Hoarding food and toilet paper, preparing for quarantine.... it's a total media circus already despite what the government is (or is not) saying. I'm not saying this virus isn't serious, but we need to keep this in perspective too. Of the 7 billion or so people in the world, 116,000 have this virus. The sky is not falling.

I'm a nurse who has worked in isolation units and the ICU...This particular virus is causing severe pneumonia in a larger percentage of patients (people who normally do not get it with the "regular influzena") because more people are getting sick at once or around the same time and need extra care (oxygen support with possible mechanical ventilation (a machine.) That causes a problem because only so many ventilators are available, there is not one for every hospital bed (so if your hospital has 500 beds, they might only have 50-75 vents because that is what is usually have on hand). Some years during the flu all of our vents were in use and they couldn't get anymore as other hospital in the area were maxed out as well. Because people are taking so long (some weeks) to get better, the more people that fall ill needing help are aren't to get the support they need because someone else is still using (the ventilator) for sometimes weeks at a time. Sorry this is OT but I just wanted to explain how a medical system could overwhelmed from a mechanical support perspective.

Keeping it in perspective also means looking at the fall out or potential fall out everywhere. It's very isolating (and no pun intended) when we use tunnel vision.

There are billions of people throughout the world that rely on certain industries, economic healths of countries are being and could be impacted in the future due to this, populations and the makes up could be impacted, heck the travel industry is considered worse off from what I've read already in comparison to 9/11 and for good reasons considering modes of transportation unfortunately contribute to the potential spread. So we can all just focus on a number of those who are counted towards having it but we can also pay attention to domino effects...and not that does not mean feeding into "the sky is falling". Extremes one way or the other rarely are good for all.

One thing the country definitely needs to learn from this is that shorter supply chains for many items are an issue of national safety, I say safety instead of security because I don't mean it in a military defense way. What we need is to be able to make our medicines and other healthcare items.

Rural communities are going to get crushed with their lack of hospitals and aging population. And if they do go to a hospital in a rural area, it’s most likely not staffed for a pandemic, and it most likely doesn’t have a lot of ventilators. This is where I see this virus being particularly nasty.
